Calgary also signed Jim's brother Pete Vandermeer. Sutter's big on family, and why wouldn't he be?

Any real fan in Raleigh is probably heartsick. Erik Cole for Pitkanen?

That is hard to take.

Pretty much. I was wondering what they were thinking with that trade.
It's basically a money dump. Yes, Pitkanen now has the same cap hit as Cole, but they have him for 3 more years. Cole's unrestricted next year.

Salary Dump, Salary Shmump. Cole is the kind of player you build around. He might just be my favorite non-Sabre.

Thanks for that. I actually feel better. He sounded a lot better then I thought he would after reading some of the posts about it.

I just watched it too and I agree. He sounds like he has a plan, he just doesn't want to talk about it.

Perfect fit for him. Can you imagine him and Steve Ott on the same line? Any more pests and only the Orkin man will be able to stop them.

Throw in Morrow and you have talent, grit, agitation and maybe enough to give Detroit a run for their money.

You posted a criticism of what Darcy said at the presser before you watched it? That's against the rules.

I too found the presser fairly encouraging. Too much panicking going on around here.

Yeah I really liked Dallas as a darkhorse this past year when the playoffs started ... they did lose Hagman though, and they will need Modano to have another decent year.

Yep, Hossa is a Red Wing. I can see them repeating again this season. I know its super early but they didn't lose anybody and just got stronger. Sucks!!

Superstar signs one-year deal with Stanley Cup champions

? The Red Wings? inability to get secondary scoring last season was constantly scrutinized in the media.

That issue was put to rest Wednesday ? the second day of free agency ? when the Red Wings signed superstar right wing Marian Hossa to a one-year contract.

Hossa, 29, helped the Pittsburgh Penguins reach the 2008 Stanley Cup finals, where they lost to the Red Wings in six games.

In 10 NHL seasons, Hossa has scored 299 goals and 349 assists with a plus-85 rating.

It?s believed that the Edmonton Oilers were also suitors in the Hossa sweepstakes, with a reported offer of as much as $9 million for the Czechoslovakian star.

While I am also a big fan of Cole as you are and agree, I am not sure based on his history of injuries, that I can trust building my team around Cole.

In a perfect world yes I agree, but I cannot look past that injury history.

Like I said, it sounded good until that last comment. We are not good down the middle, not with Timmy as one of the four and no real fifth (or, really, with Timmy as one of the top two and no real third that can play in the top two.) About the rest, I was encouraged.

Did you catch the Paille St Louis refernece? Was that two different subjects or something else, I didn't understand?

I seem to remember myself giving Darcy this season to right the wrongs...The season just started yesterday..There are going to be plenty of players come available after everyone has spent there dough..I am just hoping that we can land Jason Smith..I think of all the freeagents that were and are still available he is the one player that can come in here and fill more voids than anyone else..Leadership and toughness..I would like a better two way center and they are still there if they want..Maybe Darcy wants to give Gerbe a shot at winning a job sometime this year and expects Connoly to get hurt again..There are many ifs out there but by and large I am happy with the young players that we have as long as they continue to come of age..Its the only path we have in front of us to look forward to so once u get your mind back to 4 years ago this becomes exciting again..

He also did say that that's his short term stance on the subject.

How much better can they really be?

Besides, I think he only did it to screw up my prediction of him getting over $9 million.

Just kidding....

He said he and others were hoping that St.Louis would wait the full seven days before matching so Vancouver had to wait and thus wouldn't target someone else.

If I am deciphering those words correctly It would lead me to believe he is afraid of having to match Paille or Bernier..Or maybe he is about to launch an offer to a RFA himself and didnt want to be beaten to the punch

Well what kind of team would have to worry about being targeted as a team that loses UFA's and matches ridiculous contracts for RFA's?

Staal's contract is up after this season too. Its looking like it was a one or the other situation.
