tom webster Posted July 1, 2008 Report Posted July 1, 2008 I took a lot of heat when I pointed out that LQ mentioned Gaustad in the same breath as Miller and Pominville but made no mention of Paille. I was told I was reading too much into it and it was probably a bad edit job. I didn't bring it back up when in two subsequent interviews he again didn't mention Paille. Today Darcy dismissed the notion that Mike Green and Dan Paille were in any way comparable saying that they were apples and oranges and Green at a young age had established himself as an elite player. Just continue to find it interesting how there seems to be such a higher opinion of Paille on message boards then there is within the offices at HSBC arena.

Someone will offer him 4 for $12. God I hope I'm wrong.

awill29 Posted July 1, 2008 Report Posted July 1, 2008 Darcy really did lay one on Danny. He goes and calls Mike Green an elite player in his first year of play, and then says comparing him to Paille is apples to oranges? Not exactly something you'd want to say to a guy you're (hopefully) trying to resign. 19 (or so) goals in his first full year of play isn't that bad either, wouldn't you say, Darcy?
carpandean Posted July 1, 2008 Report Posted July 1, 2008 As a defenseman, Green put up just 1 less goal and more than double the assists that Paille did. Green is playing as an elite puck-moving defenseman right now. Paille is showing potential to be a very good forward, but is not playing at an elite level now.

Probably a little posturing for contract negotiations...

Yeah, but the year before, Paille had a horrible time finding the net. Maybe the coaches see more than we do.

Mike Green is a top 4 defencemen that can move the puck and score. Paille is not a top 6 forward. (not yet anyway) It really is apples and oranges. Remember it was in the context of RFA contracts and offer sheets.

X. Benedict Posted July 1, 2008 Report Posted July 1, 2008 Fair enough. But still, the timing is pretty bad. And probably a very good reason not to schedule a 11:00 am press conference on July 1.

(not yet anyway) It really is apples and oranges. Remember it was in the context of RFA contracts and offer sheets. Exactly what I was going to say. There is a major difference in breaking the 6 slot roster on D compared to the 12 spots up front. Also, Paille's value has been inflated a bit around here (just like many other players), but he's definitely a valuable role guy. Not the kind of guy that will break the bank, but he will earn a decent contract.

Pardon me while I chortle my way through this response. So, now that the front office *seems to be*, perhaps, of the same opinion of Paille as you, they are credited...while the opinions found in this very forum, in which you are among the most opinionated, is implicitly discredited? Whichever way the webster wind blows, I guess. It couldn't be that DR simply meant that comparing a highly productive D to a developing F isn't a good comparison, naaaah. Couldn't be. Man, your desire to be perceived as authoritative is just plain weird.
apuszczalowski Posted July 1, 2008 Report Posted July 1, 2008 Paille might not be elite just yet, but that doesn't mean anything. It would be like someone comparing to Darcy Pominville and Crosby. Of course he will say Crosby is elite and its apples and oranges compared to Pomminstein, doesn't mean Jason is not good or someone they want. Maybe the apples and oranges comment was because ones a defencemen and the others a forward? BTW, I hear that in person, Paille is a bit of a jerk, or atleast thats what some of my friends that went to the same school as him have said. Kind of a fun fact, he is in the wedding party of Dan Girardi of the Rangers this summer. A buddy of mine went to the Stag and Doe which was just around the corner from another one of my friends place (he is supposed to have Girardi come to his house to sign a jersey he won too this summer) and he said they had alot of autographed Rangers and Sabres gear there as prizes for the draws

And I'm still looking for Toronto to make an offer, that's where Danny wants to play anyway.

Also, one year qualifies for a highly productive defensemen but only developing when it comes to a forward???
BetweenThePipes00 Posted July 1, 2008 Report Posted July 1, 2008 Show me where I gave an opinion on whether they are right. Also, one year qualifies for a highly productive defensemen but only developing when it comes to a forward??? Well, Green was in the top 10 in scoring for defensemen ... Paille was 10th on the Sabres in scoring ... That's apples and oranges to me and not necessarily a shot at Paille, he was not asked to do the things a PP quarterback like Green was.

Look, I think that Green is ten times the player that Paille is. I was just making a point.
X. Benedict Posted July 1, 2008 Report Posted July 1, 2008 That's just not true. And I'm still looking for Toronto to make an offer, that's where Danny wants to play anyway. I don't see it happening. If they come with an offer under 2.6 the Sabres will match. And over there is no way that Toronto is going to part with a 1st rounder with the Tavares sweeps next year.

Ghost of Dwight Drane Posted July 1, 2008 Report Posted July 1, 2008 I'm just going by what some friends of mine that went to the same school at the same time had said I wouldn't be shocked to see the Canucks come forward. Pyatt worked out for them, and execs tend to go to the same well of what works....ie..Buffalo can't develop complete forwards, so we can move Paille up in performance. Maybe Darcy didn't mention Paille because he knows he is already gone and is trying to make it look like no big deal.

IMHO, Darcy's not worried about losing Pie-YAY or Bernier, but worried about losing both.

We need more draft picks anyway..We need to restock Portland...Cant wait to see what picks we get when we have to "CAMPBELL" Pominville and Miller at the trade deadline....

Eleven Posted July 1, 2008 Report Posted July 1, 2008 Throwin it out right now. Someone will offer him 4 for $12. God I hope I'm wrong. I hope you're right. Wow, I hope you're right. I'd take good draft picks for Paille any day.
