Buffalo Fan Posted July 1, 2008 Report Posted July 1, 2008 Could he be a cheaper alternative to JM Lyles? And improve the possibility of adding a puck moving D man AND a ballsy D-man (Orpik) this summer? MIght keep in line with Reiger's "under the radar" MO

And improve the possibility of adding a puck moving D man AND a ballsy D-man (Orpik) this summer? MIght keep in line with Reiger's "under the radar" MO Finger could be a decent pick up, but again, I'd be surprised if Orpik signs here.
ROC Sabres Posted July 1, 2008 Report Posted July 1, 2008 Finger could be a decent pick up, but again, I'd be surprised if Orpik signs here. I need to be the optimist here and say, why not both?
jimiVbaby Posted July 1, 2008 Report Posted July 1, 2008 Doesn't tickle my fancy, but seems like a Darcy move. I heard he was a late bloomer with legit puck moving abilities. Wasn't that Brian Campbell 3 years ago?
Buffalo Fan Posted July 1, 2008 Author Report Posted July 1, 2008 Finger could be a decent pick up, but again, I'd be surprised if Orpik signs here. Has Brooks given any indication? His brother seems to think it is possible...I would bet that he is willing, but I also bet that someone other than Buffalo is going to drop a but-load of $$ in his lap.
tom webster Posted July 1, 2008 Report Posted July 1, 2008 I need to be the optimist here and say, why not both? Because it is my opinion that Buffalo don't think he's what they want. I think Buffalo will bring in a true number one d-man and its not him.

Buffalo Fan Posted July 1, 2008 Author Report Posted July 1, 2008 I do hope Philly doesn't sneak in and get Orpik http://www.yardbarker.com/nhl/articles/Fly...e_agency/284195
tom webster Posted July 1, 2008 Report Posted July 1, 2008 True number one d-man as in? I'm seriously just wondering who you have in mind. I don't want to get all Ecklund. I think the reason they are targeting a top 6 forward is because thye plan to package Drew, possibly with Max and Tallinder for someone that will shock the masses.

His brother seems to think it is possible...I would bet that he is willing, but I also bet that someone other than Buffalo is going to drop a but-load of $$ in his lap. From what I had heard, he said that he would love to play for Buffalo, but this is a buisness, which in other words means he is going to the highest bidder. He won't be taking a "hometown" discount
SabresFan526 Posted July 1, 2008 Report Posted July 1, 2008 I think Finger is a reasonable option for the Sabres. He had a very good season this year. He's a late bloomer, but if he builds off the momentum from this season, he could have a solid career. I think he's kind of the next best option from Liles. Liles has a good shot and is a good skater and will roam the slot as a trailer to score those goals a la Rob Blake/Larry Robinson (but nowhere near as good defensively as those guys). Finger is a bit more positional and plays the point and plays it pretty well. He'll make the occasional pinch, but he's not Soupy or Liles. I would not mind having Finger playing on the bottom pair. I think he'd be a good, cheap pickup. I just wonder if he's necessary if Paetsch can live up to his potential, but this past season did not seem as promising as his rookie year.
apuszczalowski Posted July 1, 2008 Report Posted July 1, 2008 So in other words he is a poor mans [insert good player here]? Thats the kind of moves I would not be shocked to see them make, guys whose descriptions are basically that they are a "poor mans" version of someone good
inkman Posted July 1, 2008 Report Posted July 1, 2008 I'm not sure how many Fingers in the five hole I want to hear...
slugspirit Posted July 1, 2008 Report Posted July 1, 2008 I'm not sure how many Fingers in the five hole I want to hear... C'mon, every time an opposing forward gets hit... "You just got Fingered!"
shrader Posted July 1, 2008 Report Posted July 1, 2008 From what I had heard, he said that he would love to play for Buffalo, but this is a buisness, which in other words means he is going to the highest bidder. He won't be taking a "hometown" discount Little Orpik is no idiot. He was just telling the fans what they want to hear. It doesn't mean much (especially since he probably won't ever sign with this team either).

wjag Posted July 1, 2008 Report Posted July 1, 2008 I do hope Philly doesn't sneak in and get Orpik http://www.yardbarker.com/nhl/articles/Fly...e_agency/284195 This is what I've been thinking too. My speculation is he will either be a Ranger or a Flyer. In fact, I'm expecting Orpik and Hossa to be Rangers around 12:10 today.
SabresFanInRochester Posted July 1, 2008 Report Posted July 1, 2008 True number one d-man as in? I'm seriously just wondering who you have in mind. You can go back to the trade deadline, and my rant has been the same. Get Bouwmeester. He would be your #1 d-man and would make an immediate impact. That's the guy I want to see in Buffalo more than any other.

You and all the other posters longing for Bouw are making a huge assumption...that Florida wants to get rid of him. He can cry 'til the cows come home about "wanting out", but Florida has his rights.
shrader Posted July 1, 2008 Report Posted July 1, 2008 Why should little Orpik give two craps about what the fans want to hear? Because he's still one of them.
darksabre Posted July 1, 2008 Report Posted July 1, 2008 I honestly think little Orpik just spouted his crap so that the Pens would offer big brother a better contract if there were rumors he was going to the Sabres.
2ForTripping Posted July 1, 2008 Report Posted July 1, 2008 Well the numbers game has started Green getting 5.25 a year for 4 years Orpik wil get more I believe and as for Soupy he's going to get same large coin if that is what the money trend is going to be I fear Orpik is going elsewhere

The market pays for offense. Compare: Green - 18 G, 38 A for 56 P in 82 GP Orpik - 1 G, 10 A for 11 P in 78 GP Green put up decent numbers for a forward! Orpik is a banger, not a scorer. Green's contract will affect Campbell's a lot more. Edit: Bryce Salvador just got 4 years, $11.6M. He's older and a little injury-prone, but puts up similar numbers as Orpik and is also a banger. I'm guessing the $4-$5M per year will be the right range for Brooks.
