Orpik Turns Down Pens Offer

Orpik turned down the Penguins' offer to return with a bigger contract. His younger brother is apparently in our farm system and he is from the Buffalo area. Not to mention he is exactly the type of experienced and talented D-man that we need on this team. I say Buffalo should offer him a five year 25 mil contract and dump either Lydman or Tallinder along with the dispatch of Kalinin and get Orpik. That would shore up the backline and put us on a better footing defensively for next season. If only we could find some experience on the front lines to help those young forwards.

I guess its time to chime in on the Orpik deal. Like Jokinen before him, Orpik is another player that gets more play on message baords and rumor mills then he does inside the offices at 1 Knox Plaza. While it is possible that he signs with Buffalo, they will not go to the wall for him. They see him as a $3.5 million player and I doubt that comes even close to getting him.

I am all for dumping Lydman as long as dumping brings us back a player or prospect in return and we sign Orpik..I wouldnt give up on Tallinder..I think he will recover from a bad year though

Interesting, and I agree that $3.5 million won't be enough.

From what the folks over @ Letsgopens are chirping he was supposedly offered the 3.5 million a year, Orpik turned it down because he wanted a contract with more years. We'll see if he is genuine in his statement if and when he hits the market next week.

Darcy mentioned at the draft that there was a defenseman that they were interested in trading for one of their first round picks (among other things). I wonder if that is Orpik or someone else.

He will probably get a big pay day somewhere, but I would love to see the Sabres at least try. We have something that nobody else has (we're his home town, not to mention we have his brother's rights), so we won't have a better chance picking up anyone else (at least from the UFA market.)

Excellent ..."5 for 25" rears its ugly head once again. Orpik isn't worth anywhere near 5 mil per year and the Sabres would be wise to pass on him if the bidding goes much above 3-3.5 per year.

I am just rough guessing but I have the Sabres at around 46 mill with ext Miller and Pominville and giving them 6 mill more than what their earning total now and signing their rfa..That gives them roughly 10 mil under the cap to sign their needs or take on bigger contracts..If a player is their that will help fill their needs they have more than enough room to overspend and get quality and quantity..There is no excuse for pennypinching..If a player is their that they need or can acquire to shore up their weak pathetic defense I dont want to hear he was out of what we could afford..

'nough said. Get 'er done!

Holy moly. Were lucky if we get many big hits in one period. Orpik is a perfect fit to the sabres. Maybe we can trade Max for him? It seems Hossa is not staying in Pittsburgh,so they might want to replace the lost offense with Max. It would be a win win for both teams. Crosby and Max together would be a great pair.

They can't trade what they don't own (i.e., him under contract after July 1st.) We could trade something for his negotiation rights before free agency starts, but we'd better know that we can get it done on Monday (last day before FA) or it's a waste.

Ohhh, i didn't know that. That sucks. It would of been a good idea though.

Not only can this guy give an ass kicking, but he can actually teach the Sabres how to hit! He's worth 5 million. I don't care what anyone says. The Sabres need someone like that. Wait, let me change that. The Sabres need HIM! Darcy, pay him the money! Tell Larry Quinn to stay out of this. Orpik, come back to Buffalo!

Is this Andrew Orpik posting?

I can't get enough of that....wow. Just wow.

Especially when you consider he flattened each one of those checks.. He definitely had a monster playoff run...

Buffalo has the money and we haven't had a D-man who could hit like that since Rob Ray left the team. Buffalo needs a tough experienced D-man and Orpik is the right guy. The fact that we are his hometown probably helps a little with the contract price, as does the fact that we have the rights to his brother. If Buffalo could get he and Warrener, who is also not resigning with his current team, our D would be much better as a whole, and we would be able to let Lydman go, thus saving us a bit more money. I think Numminen is going to be back for one more season, and Spacek did pay better last year. Tallinder is young and skilled, but that is the problem with our D. They are, for the most part, young, and skilled, but small. We need another big guy like Orpik to help the situation. He would be a good pick up and the price wouldn't be so high that he wouldn't be worth it.

So, Pittsburgh took a fourth-round pick for negotiation rights for Malone and Roberts. Do you think that they would take a fifth-round pick for negotiation rights for Orpik? It would give us through Monday to get something done before anyone else can take a shot. Not much to risk with a big potential payoff. Might be worth it.

Am I misreading this or are you implying that Rob Ray was a defenseman?

Technically, he just said that we haven't had a defenseman who could hit on the team since the time when Rob Ray was here. It only implies that Rob Ray was one (defenseman who could hit) before that time.

Weber hits and so did Soupy...once...then one more time a couple of years later, but I get your point.

Did anyone ever consider Rob Ray a hitter? I mean he hit a lot of fists with his face but was he ever really a hitter?

Good for him on probably cashing in big in the FA market. It just won't be in Buffalo.

His playoff play will inflate his value, and if he goes anywhere where media and fans don't know about hockey and doesn't sustain last postseason's level of play, he'll be seen as a disappointment.
