gregkash Posted June 22, 2008 Report Posted June 22, 2008 OTTAWA ? Two pieces of paper with names scribbled on them are the highlight of Darcy Regier?s 2008 NHL draft. The Buffalo Sabres general manager coveted defenseman Tyler Myers, the 6-foot-7 defenseman who could fill several needs with one large appearance. But the Los Angeles Kings wanted a defenseman, too, and before they would swap spots with the Sabres, the teams had to make sure they didn?t desire the same prospect. So Regier and the Kings? draft head hastily wrote down their top prospects? names. They made an agreement to show their papers at the same time. If the names were the same, the Kings were keeping the 12th overall pick. If the names were different, L. A. was canceling its deal with another team and would move down one spot to allow the Sabres to pick 12th. ----- So, he KNEW the kings weren't taking Myers and yet he made the trade anyway?
shrader Posted June 22, 2008 Report Posted June 22, 2008 The Kings had a deal in place with another team for that pick. The kings wanted Teubert and were guaranteed of getting him if they only fall back one spot with the Sabres. In the other deal, they would have fallen back a few more spots and had no guarantee of landing him. That team could very well have been moving up to land Myers.

LA had no reason to show Buffalo their pick unless Buffalo agreed to give up the pick. I am sure the deal was, we will reveal our pick to you if you agree to throw in a pick. If Buffalo says no, we won't give up the pick, theoretically LA could have dealt the pick to a team that would have taken Myers.
james duncan Posted June 22, 2008 Report Posted June 22, 2008 Kash--not if you read the rest of the story: "...If the names were different, L. A. was canceling its deal with another team and would move down one spot to allow the Sabres to pick 12th..." Shrader and Webster are right. LA made a really good deal and Darcy assured himself of getting the player they wanted.
rickshaw Posted June 24, 2008 Report Posted June 24, 2008 I take no issue with how the Kings and Sabres worked that out. If only other arrangements could be made so quickly and without disdain. I like the move by both clubs. It basically showed good faith from both sides. Each time knew what was gonna happen either way.
