wjag Posted June 21, 2008 Report Posted June 21, 2008 Well they're 14 picks in and TSN's top 14 ranked players are gone. They're very happy with that. Yeah I get that, but not every player is THE player for each of these teams... The odds just have to be against it...
tom webster Posted June 21, 2008 Report Posted June 21, 2008 warum?? why? Unless I missed a change in the rules, underage draft picks must either make the big club or go back to their Junior team.
shrader Posted June 21, 2008 Report Posted June 21, 2008 Let's get Emery as our backup goalie... He's available... :chris: Just in case you're serious, his cap figure is $3.167 million.
tom webster Posted June 21, 2008 Report Posted June 21, 2008 Just in case you're serious, his cap figure is $3.167 million. I don't want Emery but after he is bought out, he will be lucky to get a million. Ellis just signed for $1.75.
wjag Posted June 21, 2008 Report Posted June 21, 2008 Just in case you're serious, his cap figure is $3.167 million. Nah.. I just saw there was a whole thread already on him.. I should have known. I don't think we could keep Peters from beating the crap out of him during practice..

I'm not aware of the rules, but my understanding is that 18 year old players can turn professional and play in the AHL. Tyler Myers turned 18 on February 1st. If you can cite or explain the rule, it would be much appreciated as this is my interpretation, but I could very well be wrong.

Its the same situation as Jordan Staal and Sam Gagner. They had to either make the NHL or go back to Juniors.

A player who plays for a CHL team has to be 20 or turn 20 by Dec 31st of that playing year to be eligible to play in the AHL. The exception of rule is euros who haven't played in the CHL.
wjag Posted June 21, 2008 Report Posted June 21, 2008 Note to the NHL and VS.. A ticker would be most useful... Be nice to recap all the trades and draft picks...

SabresFanInRochester Posted June 21, 2008 Author Report Posted June 21, 2008 Thank you. I was pretty sure I was right, but as I get closer to 50, I get less definite about my memory. Alright. I'm not an idiot, but I have heard this debated, and I still don't know what it means. :wallbash: So, does Myers have to play in Buffalo, or we lose him? Can we sign him and send him to Portland? Can we let him develop in juniors without losing him? If he must be called up to Buffalo and play so many games, how many games are we talking about? Thanks!
ROC Sabres Posted June 21, 2008 Report Posted June 21, 2008 Note to the NHL and VS.. A ticker would be most useful... Be nice to recap all the trades and draft picks... Agreed, Pretty easy to do too. Especially if you are a web designer like me, or a trained monkey.
kingcongkorab Posted June 21, 2008 Report Posted June 21, 2008 Note to the NHL and VS.. A ticker would be most useful... Be nice to recap all the trades and draft picks... I agree a 100%. The lack of that has hurt the broadcast tonight. I missed the first 2 picks and did not know about the first 3 way trade until much later in the broadcast.

If they think he is ready for the NHL( highly unlikely), he can play in Buffalo. More then likely he plays for his junior team for at least 1 year.
wjag Posted June 21, 2008 Report Posted June 21, 2008 Anybody else surprised Philly unloaded RJ Umburger? He had a huge playoff. Is this a case of trading while the market value is high?
shrader Posted June 21, 2008 Report Posted June 21, 2008 If examples help, here are two guys to look at from last season, Lucic in Boston and Jonathan Bernier in LA. Both still had eligibility left in the juniors but started the season at the NHL level. Lucic played well enough that Boston decided to keep him. The Kings felt Bernier would benefit the most by returning to juniors. There is a specific number of games that is the cutoff for when the final decision must be made. I believe its 15, but maybe someone can verify that. Myers will probably show up for camp, but the most likely scenario is what Tom suggested. He'll be returned to his junior team well before the season starts. That is generally how this team does things. They can keep him, but I think there's enough of a logjam with our young defensemen that they'd rather have him playing a full season in juniors.
ROC Sabres Posted June 21, 2008 Report Posted June 21, 2008 Anybody else surprised Philly unloaded RJ Umburger? He had a huge playoff. Is this a case of trading while the market value is high? Very much actually and especially for very little at that.
SabresFanInRochester Posted June 21, 2008 Author Report Posted June 21, 2008 I appreciate the clarification and the example. Now, the real question: How long do we have to wait before we see Myers standing next to Gerbe?
tom webster Posted June 21, 2008 Report Posted June 21, 2008 I appreciate the clarification and the example. Now, the real question: How long do we have to wait before we see Myers standing next to Gerbe? Next week at developmental camp. I'm betting a picture will surface.
shrader Posted June 21, 2008 Report Posted June 21, 2008 Gerbe was a linemate of this for two years. Its quite a site. I'd guess that Boyle was a bit more build than Myers is at this point.
SabresFan526 Posted June 21, 2008 Report Posted June 21, 2008 The Sabres are back on the clock. It'd be interesting to see if they trade for a player, but my guess is they'll make the pick. Don't know who's available and the skillsets. I think the Sabres go forward, but wouldn't be surprised if they pick a defenseman, but I don't see them going goalie.
shrader Posted June 21, 2008 Report Posted June 21, 2008 This will be a forward but I don't have the slightest clue who. The homer in me wants to see Trivino, but he could very easily be around when we pick in the 2nd.
SabresFanInRochester Posted June 21, 2008 Author Report Posted June 21, 2008 All I can say about the Ennis pick -- it gives me hope that they plan on extending Miller. I think they would have gone goalie if they planned on letting Miller walk. I know Enroth is in the system, but they would have needed another goalie to develop. As far as the actual pick, who knows. We needed a physical defenseman and a center. I hope these two aren't the answer for next season, because they're not ready. Please tell me there is someone in the works to fill in the blanks.
shrader Posted June 21, 2008 Report Posted June 21, 2008 They'll go goalie later in the draft. They do every year. I don't see any need to go after one this early.
