Will the Sabres trade for a good player this weekend?

Will the Sabres make a real trade this weekend?

38 members have voted

  1. 1. Darcy and Quinn have stated multiple times this offseason that help is needed on defense, and that the trade route is more likely than the FA route. This weekend is the first potential player movement bazaar of the offseason. Will it happen this weekend? Will Darcy trade for a top 2 center or a top 4 defenseman? [Note: the question is whether we will trade for an established NHL player, not trade for a draft pick.]

BTW, I know I'm out to lunch on a lot of things, but I just learned this afternoon that the 1st round of the draft is tomorrow (friday), not Saturday. So, it's quite possible that we'll see some action tomorrow AM.

I voted "yes".

Go Sabres.

I agree w/ you 110%. I'm hoping to be the guy in the NHL.com commercial. He's standing in line, w/ a Canadians jersey on, at a hockey game and some guys says to him that player doesn't play for our team. The person in line says he will be tomorrow...or something like that. It'd be great to be having an Ollie or Gaborik jersey made this weekend! If I get to, it's beer time!

While I believe that the Sabres will be players this off season, I feel the need to point out that it is a misnomer to say that the team has targeted defensemen as their key need. What they have stated continuously is that the team needs to play better defense and I believe that is more about a committment to overall team defense, not necessarily an indictment of the six players playing the blue line.

That being said, I believe the team desires to upgrade 3 positions;

1) Top D man replacing either Lydman (more likely) or Tallinder

2) Number 2 Center unless a Number 1 falls in their lap allowing them to play Roy, Hecht and Pominville as a dynamic yet responsible number 2 line.

3) Veteran forward to play on third line with Paille and Gaustad.

I voted yes, mostly on hope. I really want to believe that the team is desperate to fix what went wrong last offseason and what ultimately doomed us this year.

However a weekend with no trades would not surprise my cynical side one bit.

I think they also said that after they were bounced from the ECF by Ottawa - better team defense, more commitment, blah blah blah. They need at least one, maybe two new players, and they have at least one spot to fill, maybe more.

I'm thinking w/ the thought the glass is half full. Yes, that glass is beer, but still...I think Buffalo will be SOME WHAT agressive this weekend. For Buffalo to get back to contention they have to be.

I didn't vote. I'm watching the Blues management team on draft day on NHL Network All Access right now. I realize have no freakin' clue what Darcy and Quinn have up there sleeve. Wow, those guys make trades as late as one pick before their pick comes up. I don't envy them at all and their reward is that they get to be slammed on SS

That, and those big paychecks deposited into their bank accounts every two weeks... ;)

I wish one paycheck would be deposited in mine once a year! Bmwolf, you talk a lot about your son. How long, meaning how old is he, has he been a Sabres fan? My wife and I had our first daughter, and first child, 7 months and 17 days ago! I still can't believe I'm a Dad. I already have her first sabres outfit, one she has out grown, framed on a wall in her room! It took a lot to get my wife to allow that. I just remember you talking about him during the 06/07 playoffs. Teaching him anything hockey related to him yet?

There is nothing like enjoying a special moment at a hockey game with your kids. My 19 year old son was with me for "no goal" nine years ago today when he was 10. I must have thought about different moments of that day twenty times today.

Congrats on the little girl! You getting much sleep?

Hunter is now 16 months old. The first year flew by, and he's turning into a little person now - quite the personality. He seems to really like sports, any time he sees a baseball game on TV he claps and runs to the TV and watches with a big smile. I'm hoping he catches the same bug once the football and hockey seasons roll around...his little Sabres' outfit didn't last long, and looks a little worse for the wear, so I didn't even think about talking the wife into hanging it. I did hang a few of the McFarlane figures on his bedroom wall - there are Miller, Perreault, LeBron and another one I am forgetting right now...end of a long day and my brain is fried.

We did take him to the Lake Erie Monsters home finale a couple months ago and he seemed to have a good time...we went down by the glass and he liked banging on the glass and watching the guys skate by in warmups. Plus he was a giveaway gold mine - every Monsters' person who was giving stuff away made sure he got something - even a security guard grabbed one of the bags to make sure he got it.

My little guy is 10 weeks old ... he was born the day the Sabres beat the Bruins 3-0 to close the season ... he's undefeated!

10 weeks? Go get some sleep, man...and if I didn't tell you before, congrats!

I mentioned in the other thread - we live just south of Cleveland and drove into Niagara Falls a month before my wife's due date for her baby shower. The night of the shower we beat Calgary in a SO, and an hour later my wife was telling me we needed to go to the hospital. He was born the next morning via c-section.

I voted no, but hope I'm wrong.

Yeah, I'm trying to stay optimistic and positive...but I have a bad feeling.

This draft weekend is really reminding me of the 2004 Draft weekend. That's the weekend Darcy decided to let both Zhitnik and Satan go. I think this weekend we're going to see Afinogenov gone and I wouldn't be surprised if Kotalik ends up gone as well. I think this weekend could be very pivotal to the success of the team this upcoming season.

Congrats to both of you. Bloody hard work, but there's nothing like it.

Here are my top 2 sports moments with my son, who's now 8:

My first Sabres game with him was an Islanders game here in NYC in November of 05-06 -- a/k/a the best Sabres season since No Goal. Nobody was going to Islanders games, so we were able to get "student discount" seats (based on my son being in kindergarten, I guess) in the lower level for $29 each. Kotalik tied it up on a strong rush to the goal with 30 seconds left, and Connolly won it in the shootout. Just great.

My first Bills game with him was at the Ralph vs. Miami in 2005 (I think). The Bills were lousy, but they pulled out the win with a good defensive stand at the end. Most importantly, they retired Thurman's number at halftime. It was just about perfect.

Here's to more like that for all of us.

BtP & thanes16, congrats! My guys are 3 and it's a blast...

Did you name him Vanek or T-bo? ;)

For better or worse, the name (C.J.) was picked long before that night.

On the plus side, if it was a girl my wife's first choice was "Emery" ... needless to say that was a very short conversation ... ... fortunately she did not suggest "Marino" when we found out it was a boy, the kid may have come from a broken home right off the bat ;)

Thanks to all for the congrats, the lack of sleep is totally worth it ...

holy smokes. all babies are beautiful, obviously - but your wee one is legitimately cute. as a proud father of 4, i wish you all the best, pipes.

and i voted no -- because, of course, i'm trying to work my reverse mojo jinx.

Thanks, didn't really mean to hijack the thread with baby pictures ... so back on topic ... I also voted no, just because I think the Sabres WILL make some deals but not for a player yet ... I think they move Max, probably for picks or to move up, and that is the first domino ... I think they will eventually trade for OR sign a significant player ... but i don't think it will be at the draft. But you never know.

Anyone think they might try to package both first rounders to move up into the top 10 and would it be worth it?

If they were able to do this I think they could get either one of the solid defensemen or even a center like beach.

Given the depth in the organization right now, if they REALLY like a guy in the top 10 and they need to deal the 13 and 26 to get him, I would be OK with that. I guess it could be argued that you can never have too much depth and they can use some of those assets to deal for an established player but ... if they love a guy who can be a difference-maker like Vanek was pretty quickly, it would be worth it to move up. I certainly don't want them sucking anytime soon and picking in the top 10 on merit.
