rickshaw Posted June 17, 2008 Report Posted June 17, 2008 http://www.canada.com/theprovince/news/spo...e9-8cbd4f9b49cd Seriously Darcy, draft a WHL'er for once. The WHL is where the boys who come to play are from. They bust their day in day out. They go on the big bus rides. This is where you should be drafting, defense at least. I'll take either Rocket D-men thank you very much. I went to a few games this year and this Myers kids is a big boy. Skinny so far but that'll change. His reach is incredible. I think Schenn will turn into a good pro quicker and Myers may take a little longer to get there. But either would be a welcome addition to the Sabres roster down the road.
Knightrider Posted June 17, 2008 Report Posted June 17, 2008 Maybe, but hockeysfuture has them both going before the Sabres pick.
X. Benedict Posted June 17, 2008 Report Posted June 17, 2008 Darcy said they identified 2 forwards and 1 defensemen that they would like at #13. Beach, Hodgson, or Myers?
carpandean Posted June 17, 2008 Report Posted June 17, 2008 Maybe, but hockeysfuture has them both going before the Sabres pick. One spot in Myer's case, so you never know. Besides, I don't follow the logic of some of their pics. There are tons of similar mock drafts that have orders different by many places.

There are tons of similar mock drafts that have orders different by many places. And mock drafts are probably even more pointless here than they are in the NHL. Teams routinely go way off the board in this one. I can't even count the number of times in just last year's draft where the TSN commentators would have a surprised reaction to someone going 10+ spots earlier than their ranking. They're drafting kids and what stands out to one team is going to be completely different to another team.

Yeah, I figured that was the case, but Darcy said that there were about 12 that were generally accepted as better than the rest. This might have been smoke blowing though, to lay the groundwork to a claim that someone fell to their draft position.

I think you're definitely onto something there since that number 12 seems way too convenient. Each set of rankings doesn't have the same players in the top 12, so that right away brings some question to the phrase "generally accepted". They're very veiled comments that show the team has plenty of options available to them.

An odd thing to say if there is any chance that you might want to package that 13th pick in a trade (like to move up.)

This might have been smoke blowing though, to lay the groundwork to a claim that someone fell to their draft position. There are a few things Darcy usually says before the draft..."We are looking to move up" And whoever they end up getting he usually says, "We got the guy we wanted" If anything, there is no reason not to give off the positive vibe and give the scouting staff a pat on the back when it is all done. One thing he consistently says from year to year is that there are a certain number of guys that are top tier talent. Usually the top 6 to 12 based on the year, and then the next 40 picks are usually about evenly ranked.
stenbaro Posted June 18, 2008 Report Posted June 18, 2008 This years draft is about as exciting since the year we drafted Vanek..I have a feeling that the Sabres will be making a few moves exchanging players and maybe draft picks. I dont know enough about the Draftees to put an opinion on them other than to think it would be kinda cool to draft the kid from Niagara..Other than the sure thing like Stamkos its all just a crapshoot usually..If you look at past drafts the Sabres have had the one that stands out the most is I believe 97 draft where we picked up Tallinder Max and Campbell..It should be interesting to say the least..
Bmwolf21 Posted June 18, 2008 Report Posted June 18, 2008 Hopefully we don't take a scorer/finesse player and pass on a franchise defenseman like we did in 2003.
shrader Posted June 18, 2008 Report Posted June 18, 2008 Hopefully we don't take a scorer/finesse player and pass on a franchise defenseman like we did in 2003. Hey, it could be far worse. We could've done what the Rangers did with the 12th pick that year. Nevermind the fact that two other defensemen came off the board between Vanek and Phaneuf.

Nashville and Atlanta can join the other six teams who passed on Phaneuf - but only a handful of those teams can truly say they didn't need Dion or got a much better player.

Yeah, and we can say that about every single draft in the history of mankind. But really, of all 7 teams that picked before Atlanta, sure, they probably would rather have Phaneuf, but most are happy with who they got. Really, the only team that completely botched their pick was Atlanta, but that's only because they were dumb enough to trade Coburn for Alex Zhitnik.
wildcat48 Posted June 19, 2008 Report Posted June 19, 2008 The Sabres, imo, will select Colby Robak from Brandon at #13 and Kruise Reddick from Tri-City at #26. Yes, I went way off the board, but the Sabres have a tendency to take the small speedsters at forward. In Robak's case, he's big and has a lot Scott Niedermayer attributes in him and that can't be a bad thing. The Portland Pirates wont see the effect next season of this weekends draft, but the Buffalo Sabres are without doubt laying a foundation that will benefit the Pirates for years to come. The 2008 NHL Entry Draft, being held in Ottawa, has been dubbed as one of the best drafts in recent memory, especially for defensemen. Half of the top-ranked North American skaters are blueliners, giving NHL teams many options in building their backend. Link>>>

They've seen the writing on the wall and where this league is heading.

I think one will fall to #13. I think it will be Beach. Buffalo has needed a big nasty LW for some time. Everyone has picked Vancouver to take him, I think they balk. If Myers is available and the other two are gone, he's the pick. At #26 I think they swap and trade up to #19 and grab John Carlson. Guess who is going to Columbus? If they can't trade out, it may be Anton Gustaffson.
