frisky Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 So, I noticed that no one's brought this topic up lately, but looks like in the last week or so the Balsillie topic has heated up again over there in the Northland. Here's a link to one article which has links to other articles and video's. Link Bettman doesn't want him in the league at all but Balsillie's side claims that there are owners who are supporting at least a minority owership stake in a team. Last one was the Preds still. Personally, I wouldn't want him as a minority owner on our team. I think his ultimate goal would then become the majority owner and move them to Hamilton no matter what. Even it weren't likely to be approved the spectre of it would always be lurking in the background and would just be disquieting to a team and it's city especially if things were to start looking bad like (low attendance) in Nashville.

Which wouldn't take long, say if we come out with the same roster as this year, playing the same way :wallbash:
Goodfella25 Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 I wanna chime in here...I don't like the idea of this guy lurking around in the shadows, waiting to pounce on any struggling franchises. And look, I know we have a pretty solid fan base and the NHL more than likely views this area as a "hot bed" of sorts, but for some reason I am still nervous. I guess if it's not Balsilie, it will be somebody else, but I'm with ya frisky--I still think this guy's hell bent on getting majority ownership of a team and moving them to a different city. Probably not Hamilton since they're under the iron curtain of the Maple Leafs, but someplace else.

Hamilton is only the temporary spot for any team he buys only because they have an arena that is close to NHL standards (and can be renovated to meet the standards). His plan is a team in Kitchener/Waterloo where his buisness is based

His plan is a team in Kitchener/Waterloo where his buisness is based I was thinkin maybe someplace like Winnipeg since Toronto will crush any hopes of a Hamilton-based team, much like the Wirtz family put up the roadblocks for a Milwaukee franchise. Winnipeg has the MTS Centre, which does hold 15,015 for ice hockey. Clearly that is not up to NHL standards, but is serviceable if there was a way to expand the seating following an inaugural season.

Basillie wants a team for himself in his home town. He wants a toy for his backyard. He isn't going to buy a team and keep the where they are, or move them to anywhere else but Kitchener/Waterloo (by way of Hamilton til he builds/gets built a new arena in K/W Hamilton is right on the edge of the Sabres and Leafs marketing region, but if its a temporary thing (and he offers to compensate them) I'm sure they may not have a problem for a couple of seasons. The biggest road block is the NHL itself, that refuses to allow any new Canadian teams
