mis3384 Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 He was the best goalie Buffalo has ever had, he won more games and more awards..... What would you do? Do u think they should retire his number? --- If he goes in the hall as a Buffalo Sabre then YES def.....if he goes in as a Red Wing then yes they still should....
will Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 one of the greatest goaltenders in hockey history...gee whiz, i guess so? OF COURSE they should. he carried the franchise to their second stanley cup finals appearance almost single groin-did-ly, and if lala got his number retired, then there is no doubt dom's will get the same treatment.
Bmwolf21 Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 As much as I hated how he left, his number should have been up there before a couple of the others that are already up there. Also someone is going to have to confirm this, but I don't think the player chooses what team he wants to go in with - looking at the HHOF site LaFontaine is listed on both the Sabres, Islanders and Rangers' pages; Hawerchuk is listed on the Sabres' page despite playing just 4 1/2 season in Buffalo, etc.

I'm not saying we shouldn't retire Hasek's number, or that we won't, but it's worth pointing out that Lafontaine and Gare are near the top of the all-time scoring list, but not at the top. So it proves there is more that goes into the decision of retiring a Sabres player's number than just stats, or "greatness". It's the man himself too, almost to a personal level. A lot of people are still bitter with the way Hasek left town, and those people are just the fans. I wonder what people within the organization think of it this many years later when he is finally retired.
Two or less Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 No doubt. One of the best players ever to play in Buffalo. I don't think it's a matter of a question. The true question is which jersey does he go up in? Old school or in Goat? Hasek will hang up in the rafters and it should. His time in Buffalo just speaks for it self. 1993-94 William M. Jennings Trophy 1993-94 Vezina Trophy 1994-95 Vezina Trophy 1996-97 Hart Memorial Trophy 1996-97 Lester B. Pearson Trophy 1996-97 Vezina Trophy 1997-98 Hart Memorial Trophy 1997-98 Lester B. Pearson Trophy 1997-98 Vezina Trophy 1998-99 Vezina Trophy 2000-01 William M. Jennings Trophy 2000-01 Vezina Trophy And let's not kid ourselves, we don't play in the finals without him.
Corp000085 Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 The greatest goalie ever, and he wore a sabres uniform? Yes, we're all still bitter about how he left, but that was a shot at John Rigas, not the Buffalo Sabres. His number will go up. We just have to wait a few years, due to his impending unretirement.
SabresFanInRochester Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 Without a doubt, yes. I was in my late teens and early twenties, and really appreciating sports at the time of the Dominator. What incredible memories!
That Aud Smell Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 No disrespect intended, but I honestly don't get the idea of a debate on this topic: He's easily one of the franchise's 3 best players of all-time (and a case can be made that he was the best). He went "off rez" on a few occasions in his career (e.g., the playoffs with Nolan, Kelley, and the non-existent knee injury) and then said some (mostly true, but harsh) things following his departure that created some hard feelings. But it's not like he's OJ, for cryin' out loud.
Knightrider Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 Of course #39 should be retired. The guy's name should be mentioned with Howe, Gretzky, Orr, and Lemeuix. None of the other guys with retired Sabre sweaters are in their class.
Stoner Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 I think more time, maybe a lot more time, has to pass before it happens. Too many "right nows" in his "retirement" announcement yesterday. I don't feel I have the yada yada "right now" to keep playing. Secondly, if the retirement ceremony were to happen this fall, I guarantee a torrent of boos at HSBC Arena. The Sabres know it, and Hasek knows it, and I don't think anyone wants that scene to unfold. Ultimately, as I've said before, it's probably up to Hasek -- and he's such a wild card, I wonder if he even would want the honor. Should it be retired? Sure. I guess. The way things ended, I really don't care. It doesn't even feel like he was ever a Buffalo Sabre, and certainly not one now. In fact, the Sabres have so cheapened the number-retiring situation, I don't even care about numbers any more at all. Life itself isn't even worth living any more. Have a nice day.

None of the other guys with retired Sabre sweaters are in their class. No disrespect towards Dom, but I don't think he's in the class of those guys....they're above & beyond any hockey player that ever lived. That said, he was easily the best goalie of his era (IMO) and a sure-fire hall of fame inductee. Yes - retire his number and put the banner up in the rafters.

For a stretch there Hasek may have been better than Orr, Howe, Gretzky and Lemiuex.
ROC Sabres Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 For a stretch there Hasek may have been better than Orr, Howe, Gretzky and Lemiuex. He was no where near as good a goal scorer as these guys. :D Hang up the number. He was one of our all time bests.
Stoner Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 Jesus, if Mario was so great, how come nobody can spell his name?! Garage posters.
BamBam Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 Attitude Reflects Leadership, and he showed none when orchestrating his trade from the team. Choosing the team, and selecting the compensation as to not weaken the wings was a joke. I say no. Detroit can retire his number. When I look up in the rafters I want to see legends that were respected both on and off the ice. This guy may have been an amazing gift for our team, and maybe with time it will heal all wounds, but he screwed over the team, the city, and the fans. I see all these posts saying that his name is to be mentiond with the greats of Howe, Gretzky and Lemiuex.etc. If thats the case.... Why did we only get Kozlov back in return? I'll pass. He can hang in Detroit.

This kind of mental unhingement is what happens when you stay away from the board for two months. You have only yourself to blame. Now pull yourself up by your bootstraps and put that twisted brain to work on the key question facing us all: is spendcheeze really a chick?

Its such a stupid practice.

TM8-PL16 Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 Yes... of course #39 hangs in the rafters... I would like it to look like all the others, blue & gold I mean... but I can understand if they want to do something with the black & red for him since a chunk was in that uniform... it would look horrible and weird, but maybe something like the image below but WAY better obviously...
BamBam Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 Would you have preferred Jimmy Carson? I would've preferred equal talent in return.
