RFA - A chance to mess with the Oliers.

I post this highly doubting the Sabres would dip into the UFA market. If they are willing a good center for them would be Edmonton Oilers Jarret Stoll. A very good defensive center though his +/- took a hit last season. Stall can throw his body around, 6' 1" 210 lbs, with 120 hits last season. He has also averaged over 55% on face-offs the past three seasons. He can also play on both the PK & PP. Seems a perfect fit for the Sabres cost wise and fills needs on specials teams and face-offs.

I took the liberty of highlighting the main reasons Darcy would never look in his direction.

Other than that, it'd be sweet to #%^$#! with Kevin Lowe's cap space.

I don't know. They got Drury (defensive center) and tried to keep him. They signed Roy (defensive center) long-term. They brought in Bernier to play as a power forward.

Revenge is a dish best served cold, ice cold.

If we were to make an offer and Oilers decline to match, how do we mess with their cap space?

I never said we should do it, only that I wouldn't mind a bit if that's how a given situation played out.

Well, true... To an extent.

I wouldn't call either Drury or Roy "defensive centers", seeing as they're both used extensivlely on the PP and their offensive talents outweigh their defensive talents.

When I think "defensive center", I think Mike Peca, but I see your point.

And bringing in Bernier is exactly the reason why I don't see us bringing in another big body anytime soon.

Revenge...... Mmmmmmmmmm

Doesn't Roy play on our PK? That's pretty defensive. Pretty sure Drury did, too.

But they also play on the PP, which pushes them away from being "defensive centers" and more into the two-way category.

Is Mr. Clutch anything like Captain Clutch?

Kristian: Roy and Drury are both very good two-way centers (yes, they both play/played a lot on the PK). Compared to ... say ... Briere, I would consider them defensive, but I suppose there are some more pure defensive centers out there.

I think I would rather have a complete center over a half a center. :D

Never said either didn't, never said either wasn't defensively sound, only that they are probably considered more offensive players than defensive players.

I know I consider them more offense-minded, than - again - Mike Peca or perhaps Mike Sillinger.

Therefore I do not consider them as "defensive centers".

Miro Satan played PK as well, does that make him a "defensive winger"?

I can't disagree that they're both very complete two-way players, but I feel the "defensive" tag belongs to players a little more one-dimensional.

Yup, that's pretty much how I seem them both.

I'd say both are very solid in their own zone, but let's say you put either of them on a pure shutdown line, then you're doing at least one of two things :

1. You're wasting valuable offensive talent.

2. You're probably coming up a little short on the defensive side of things, as neither are pure shutdown guys.

It's open to debate whether you doing both things, but that's what I feel would happen.

I remember Quinn making some threats about this at the news conference last year when we announced we were matching the Vanek contract. Something about how the Sabres are watching their (Edmonton's) players and that we'd look to them to improve our club. It might be something to research but right now I don't feel like digging for the quote.

He definitely said it like a scorned little puss and won't follow through because that might actually earn him an ounce of respect.

I don't think Darcy is a revenge kind of guy, even if he did give off a soundbite in the heat of the $hitstorm last year.

But his history of trades shows that he usually gets the better deal, in hindsight. And how a deal looks in hindsight is the only sight that matters. If Darcy *were* to get involved with the Oilers, it would only be to pull off some form of rape.

But I don't think the Oilers are at all vulnerable cap or team balance-wise.

As to your comment, Inkman...you might not respect Darcy, but the professionals in the game all do. And his track record with the Sabres is worthy of your respect.

Goodfella was talking about Quinn, not Regier.

Well, let's not forget that if we would do something like this to the Oilers, we're not the only team that would have them in our crosshairs. Brian Burke of the Anaheim Ducks might have something to say about that as well.
