X. Benedict Posted June 1, 2008 Report Posted June 1, 2008 As scheduled on enroth, glad it worked out. On the Florida front, as in another thread, I am high on Bouwmeister; as well as Ollie. Both players are abit inconsistent from my experience watching florida regularly. Then again, so were the Sabres all season. If we could dump some salary and some drafts, I'd be all for it. Which could be an oxy-moron considering the cost of the one or two. Of the two, I would want Boumeister.
frisky Posted June 1, 2008 Report Posted June 1, 2008 I'm glad to see they got it done. I was thinking they were going to wait until the transfer thing got resolved. Phew.
Chief Enabler Posted June 1, 2008 Report Posted June 1, 2008 Of the two, I would want Boumeister. I thought so. You know what I am talking about. He's the real deal; he needs to be on a competitive team.
Chief Enabler Posted June 1, 2008 Report Posted June 1, 2008 There are probably more WNY'ers and folks from Ontario and Quebec in that area than you can imagine. The trouble isn't drawing hockey fans from the area, the trouble is drawing Panther fans. They really should fold it up. go to Winnipeg or something. The NHL is what it is; and i like it small-time.
Guest Sloth Posted June 1, 2008 Report Posted June 1, 2008 There are probably more WNY'ers and folks from Ontario and Quebec in that area than you can imagine. The trouble isn't drawing hockey fans from the area, the trouble is drawing Panther fans. I couldn't agree w/ you more. One, you'd have to be pulling for a team you did not grow up pulling for. Could you pull for a non-Buffalo team? I could never be a fan of a non-Buffalo team. Could you imagine having to pull for a team other than the Sabres or Bills? Second, it's tough to follow a team where the owner, most of the time anyway, is about making money, not winning a championship. When the Bills leave Buffalo, which I hope not, but know will happen, I don't think I can watch the NFL anymore. Could you? If I moved to another area, I wouldn't start going to games because I'm a resident of that area. I'd be going to games when my team is in town. If I lived in Miami, I'd go to the Panther games when Buffalo was in town. If a Buffalo team were not to exist in a sport, I could not be a fan. That would suck incredibly, but could you be a fan of a non-Buffalonian team?
tom webster Posted June 1, 2008 Report Posted June 1, 2008 With Enroth, Weber and Schutz signed, Biega in College and Breault told to look elsewhere, that leaves on Persson left from the 2006 class. With confusion still existing over the deadline and with Persson apparently not progressing very well, it will be interesting to see if Buffalo renounces their rights to him. Also, SabresProspects.com is reporting that Kennedy may have signed on Saturday.
ROC Sabres Posted June 1, 2008 Report Posted June 1, 2008 That could possible be the worst thing they could to Enroth. Throwing his kid (yes, kid - turns 20 in June) into the pros and asking him to challenge an established NHL veteran is asking too much. He hasn't played one minute in North American hockey yet, so sitting for 55-70 games as a NHL backup does little good. Let him learn at the lower level and if he comes in and absolutely dominates through the first 25-35 games, then bring him up and give him a shot. Besides - I haven't looked lately, but from what I remember we have little goaltending depth in the system after Enroth, so we need to make sure we don't actively screw up his development, and we'd be taking a huge risk in throwing him to the wolves early - i.e., if he gets rocked early it could destroy his pysche and confidence (and goalies are head cases as it is.) Either way I don't think there is much debate, because I just don't see the Sabres making him the backup and giving him the chance to beat out Ryan when he is fresh off the boat... I understand completely. Just really sick of T-Bo (even though we better be getting a new backup from free agency). I still have a lot of questions about the sabres goalie coaching though. How does a guy like Conklin play less than average for us and go to the Pens and become a beast? Who knows. Kinda disappointed I wont be able to see enroth play out here in rochester. I'll have to wait for the pirates to play the amerks i guess.

Both from the standpoint of having all the major prospects in the fold and hopefully ending the premature debates over getting the major prospects into the fold. Although I am almost dreading finding out what the next crisis around here is (prior to July 1 at any rate, I already know what that crisis (er, those crises) will be). I figure it'll be spurred on by something written by B. Gleason, something the Sabres did/didn't do at the draft, or have something to do with a delay in the announcement of the minor league affiliation.

It seems to be the general idea around Michigan State as well. I'm sure we'll be hearing it soon.

I agree WRT T-Bo - IMO they HAVE to address the backup situation through FA or trade, they cannot rely on T-bo to regain his form and regain the staff's confidence. But at the same time I don't want to rush our top prospect to the pros before he's ready, only to see him sit for 55+ games and play sparingly. We should be able to find a competent backup from this list of UFA goalies. No matter what anyone's opinion is of Ryan we really cannot expect him to play 75+ games and not wilt down the stretch. They need to find a former starter who can be counted on to give us 15, maybe 20 good games and could conceivably "hold the fort" if Ryan went down with a short-term injury.

I wonder if both T-Bo and Ryan wouldn't benefit from having T-Bo playing more often. Although i'm positive that not many here are willing to find out(I'm not even sure if I want to). But if that's not the case then I would love to see Kolzig as our back up.
SabresFan526 Posted June 1, 2008 Report Posted June 1, 2008 Well, great news for Buffalo that both Enroth and Kennedy got signed this weekend. We have our 4 top prospects signed and in the system. I don't think Enroth is ready for the NHL, and the Sabres still need a backup goaltender for next year. It looks like the farm team will be stocked for next year. I think Darcy still has to get some NHL players for next year mainly a backup goaltender, Alex Auld preferably, a second line center (I'm thinking Marleau or Jokinen), and a JM Liles and Brooks Orpik. If Darcy can do this, then I'll really be stoked. But, yes, Kennedy and Enroth signing is great news for Sabre fans, and in the near term Portland Pirates fans.

Although i'm positive that not many here are willing to find out(I'm not even sure if I want to). But if that's not the case then I would love to see Kolzig as our back up. Probably would have been beneficial to both. Back in February there were a few of us that started talking about when we could play T-bo down the stretch to keep Miller fresh and there were a lot of responses of the "ride Ryan till he falls over" variety. Seems Lindy agreed that risking two points earlier in the season was a bigger gamble than Ryan falling apart down the stretch, but that was exactly what happened - we ended up with a tired goalie playing behind a bad defense, and that was a disaster down the stretch. This coming season, whether it is Thibault, Kolzig, Dubie, Johan Holmqvist or Alex Auld as the backup, Lindy has to realize Ryan's limitations and make sure his backup is getting enough games to keep sharp and to give Ryan enough mental and physical rest.
BetweenThePipes00 Posted June 1, 2008 Report Posted June 1, 2008 I understand completely. Just really sick of T-Bo (even though we better be getting a new backup from free agency). I still have a lot of questions about the sabres goalie coaching though. How does a guy like Conklin play less than average for us and go to the Pens and become a beast? Who knows. Because he's a backup goalie ... if he was consistent he'd be starting somewhere. I know it looks bad because Conklin sucked then was great in Pittsburgh, while T-Bo was good in pittsburgh and then sucked in Buffalo ... but Conklin was the same goalie his last year in Edmonton that he was in Columbus that he was in Buffalo. Corsi wasn't coaching him when his save pct. was .880 in Edmonton or .871 in C-bus ... it actually went up to .892 in Buffalo. He just got hot this year and played out of his mind. It happens. T-Bo was decent last year in Pgh (2.83 GAA, .909 Sv.Pct) but the year before he was 1-9-3 with a 4.46 GAA and .876 .... horrible team, for sure, but 4.46?!? Corsi wasn't there that year ... Goalies struggle sometimes ... Miller had a creazy year starting with his cousin passing away and ending with trying to learn to carry the whole load for the last 4 months ... Corsi developed him and Biron since they became pros, and one of them has won enough to get teams to the ECF the last three seasons. Conklin and T-Bo he had for such a short time I don't see how you can draw any conclusions on how he coached them ... Conklin played five games and was the same as he was in C-Bus all season before that. T-Bo started all of 6 games that counted all season before the meaningless finale ... I don't think that's enough of a body of work to blame it on the goalie coach. These guys are like middle relievers ... if they were any good, they'd be starting or closing ... they have a good year, someone pays them big bucks and then is surprised when they revert back to their career norm ... Not saying the Sabres don't need to upgrade there, just saying the problem was not the goalie coach in this case, I don't believe.
wildcat48 Posted June 1, 2008 Report Posted June 1, 2008 The Buffalo Sabres have gone on a signing spree and it can only benefit the Portland Pirates ? (SHH!!!) I mean the Sabres ?unnamed? AHL affiliate ? moving forward in future as Sabres GM Darcy Regier announced the signing of forward Tim Kennedy to a two-year entry-level contract. Besides the signing of Enroth yesterday, this was perhaps the most important signing for the Sabres in terms of prospects, it was something that they simply had to get done. Kennedy finally signed by Sabres
BamBam Posted June 2, 2008 Author Report Posted June 2, 2008 So are people gonna shush up already? Hey..Its a great day. The team is showing signs of making some good moves with respect to its previous year drafted players. Its one giant step forward for them. Lets not forget though that unlike other years the organization will need to supply all the talent for its farm team, so in some respects their hand was forced in some ways to get these deals done. Nevertheless its a positive time, and with one phase of the off season complete we can only hope that the team continues taking steps forward when it comes to the Draft, Re-signing our potential FA's, signing other team's FA's, in addition to a sprinkle of trades with some of our existing players.
The_Swannie_House Posted June 2, 2008 Report Posted June 2, 2008 Hey..Its a great day. The team is showing signs of making some good moves I am happy as can be but, don't most teams do what we just did? (sign their 21 year old players in college)
inkman Posted June 2, 2008 Report Posted June 2, 2008 I am happy as can be but, don't most teams do what we just did? (sign their 21 year old players in college) Yes but all the nay sayers, doom and gloomers and negative nancies had their panties in a bunch because their man crush walked/was traded. Therefore, the organ-eye-zation was a complete joke and could no longer do things that every team has done since the begining of time.

Therefore, the organ-eye-zation was a complete joke and could no longer do things that every team has done since the begining of time. That and the fact they missed the playoffs after a a couple of better than average Stanley Cup chances... Just a quick question..Why did we sign Kennedy to only a 2 yr contract? Is that the most allowed for his age? Whats the deal??
shrader Posted June 2, 2008 Report Posted June 2, 2008 Just a quick question..Why did we sign Kennedy to only a 2 yr contract? Is that the most allowed for his age? Whats the deal?? You answered your own question. At his age, he is only subject to entry level restrictions for 2 years. It was the manditory contract length.
