inkman Posted May 27, 2008 Report Posted May 27, 2008 maybe they're trying to sell the team and don't want to take on contracts. Shades of my favorite Deluca post: Let's all buy Sabre tickets out of spite? That way they won't finish in the bottom eight in revenue and collect revenue sharing. Do you think if ticket sales are too high they would do something to discourage fans? Maybe release wolverines into the crowd in between periods? Or maybe trade Vanek and Miller straight up for Corkum? Hey. It's just a thought
ROC Sabres Posted May 31, 2008 Report Posted May 31, 2008 good news on that one. Just need Kennedy now. LINK
wildcat48 Posted May 31, 2008 Report Posted May 31, 2008 Sabres sign Enroth; Portland Bound?? It would appear the Portland Pirates have their goalie under wraps for next season as the Buffalo Sabres have signed Jhonas Enroth to a three-year entry-level contract. The Sabres, who are expected to move their affiliation to Portland next season, has been under pressure to get Enroth signed by June 1 or risk losing his rights. Link>>
tom webster Posted May 31, 2008 Report Posted May 31, 2008 Sabres sign Enroth; Portland Bound?? Link>> Great that its done. On the NHL level, there has been so much contradictory reports regarding the June 1st deadline. Most general managers are telling their fans that the deadline doesn't exist without the transfer agreement.
Bmwolf21 Posted May 31, 2008 Report Posted May 31, 2008 Awesome news. Enroth should get a full year of seasoning in the AHL and then be brought up to the NHL to backup/challenge Ryan.
ROC Sabres Posted May 31, 2008 Report Posted May 31, 2008 Awesome news. Enroth should get a full year of seasoning in the AHL and then be brought up to the NHL to backup/challenge Ryan. Screw it, bring him straight in and make Ryan sweat it even more so he plays better all year instead of knowing that the person behind him sucks and not have to worry about it.
Two or less Posted May 31, 2008 Report Posted May 31, 2008 Awesome. I'm really glad we are getting our prized guys signed. Although, i won't lie, i didn't really doubt them. But Butler and Gerbe were signed quickly and now Enorth is signed, all we got left is Timmy Kennedy. Portland should look pretty good next season.
awill29 Posted May 31, 2008 Report Posted May 31, 2008 Perfect. Ryan's already gotta be looking over his shoulder, instead of just having T-Blow and Adam Dennis behind him. When is Kennedy's deadline?
stenbaro Posted May 31, 2008 Report Posted May 31, 2008 I couldnt be happier..Hopefully he is a fast learner and we can save 6 mill..
BetweenThePipes00 Posted May 31, 2008 Report Posted May 31, 2008 When is Kennedy's deadline? I believe it is August of 2009, technically, right? Although if he plays his senior season it would be pretty obvious he intends to go back into the draft. So realistically it is before the fall 2008 semester starts at Michigan State, I would think. Not sure why everyone is kind of pushing Miller out the door here today ... none of us have seen Enroth play and already you guys are assuming he will push Miller? He could be the next Noronen and want to go home in 2 years. Don't get me wrong, I am glad they did it, it's HUGE because he was all they had in the system, whereas Kennedy is one of many forwards, but still ... I have no visions of the guy taking Miller's job yet. The best case scenario is still signing Miller long term and if Enroth dominates the AHL next season they have a bargaining chip, be it him or Miller.

He's too old to go back into the draft. He would be a free agent (still subject to entry level restrictions) if that happened. Its not going to though.

Bmwolf21 Posted June 1, 2008 Report Posted June 1, 2008 Screw it, bring him straight in and make Ryan sweat it even more so he plays better all year instead of knowing that the person behind him sucks and not have to worry about it. That could possible be the worst thing they could to Enroth. Throwing his kid (yes, kid - turns 20 in June) into the pros and asking him to challenge an established NHL veteran is asking too much. He hasn't played one minute in North American hockey yet, so sitting for 55-70 games as a NHL backup does little good. Let him learn at the lower level and if he comes in and absolutely dominates through the first 25-35 games, then bring him up and give him a shot. Besides - I haven't looked lately, but from what I remember we have little goaltending depth in the system after Enroth, so we need to make sure we don't actively screw up his development, and we'd be taking a huge risk in throwing him to the wolves early - i.e., if he gets rocked early it could destroy his pysche and confidence (and goalies are head cases as it is.) Either way I don't think there is much debate, because I just don't see the Sabres making him the backup and giving him the chance to beat out Ryan when he is fresh off the boat...

Agreed that he shouldn't be pushing Miller as much as pushing Dennis. I'd (probably) be perfectly happy w/ Ryan here the next 5-6 years. And there is absolutely no guarantee that Enroth will be able to translate his current game to the NHL, but the kid was fantastic at the World Juniors. He looked really friggin' special. Again, no guarantee that he can look incredible nor even adequate at the NHL level, but I am very glad to see this kid in the system for at least the next 3 years.
Guest Sloth Posted June 1, 2008 Report Posted June 1, 2008 I couldnt be happier..Hopefully he is a fast learner and we can save 6 mill.. You have to, in my opinion, play Enroth a year in the minors. After that, have him play on a daily basis as a backup to Ryan Miller. Miller needs to be signed long term people. It'll benefit the Sabres both short term and long term. Enroth is the future, but Miller is the now. I WANT Miller in net for the next 5 years. Too many people are wanting to throw Ryan out of town. I just don't understand it. One season people have the idea Miller is the franchise goalie we've been hoping for, and one season later people have the idea he's a complete bust. Ryan is still scary good. Some fans are just too quick to judge.
X. Benedict Posted June 1, 2008 Report Posted June 1, 2008 Don't expect to see Enroth in Blue and Gold for a few years. Sabres need somebody to play 20-25 solid games as a backup. Aside from a one or two game call-up for a look-see, he needs at least a year in the A and if he is typical, probably more. Having said that, nice signing!

I was worried the Sabres weren't going to sign him. I hope the signings of Enroth and Gerbe will get Kennedy inked up. Have you guys heard, yes, I know another rumor, Florida and the Sabres MAY be discussing a trade? Supposedly Buffalo is going for Ollie Jokinen. He'd be a GREAT veteran to have on the team, if you consider latter 20's as a vet. Ollie has size and will win faceoffs. Buffalo needs a guy like him.

As scheduled on enroth, glad it worked out. On the Florida front, as in another thread, I am high on Bouwmeister; as well as Ollie. Both players are abit inconsistent from my experience watching florida regularly. Then again, so were the Sabres all season. If we could dump some salary and some drafts, I'd be all for it. Which could be an oxy-moron considering the cost of the one or two.
shrader Posted June 1, 2008 Report Posted June 1, 2008 Ah ... but he would not be a free agent until August of 2009, right? Right. It will get done this year though, so it won't even come close to reaching that point. As for the talk in this thread either for or against rushing Enroth, you young goalie who can step up immediately is an extreme rarity in this league. If you look at many of the stars, they took years of development. For an example that hits close to home, just look at Ryan Miller. He got in a few games at the NHL level, but the bulk of his first three seasons was spent in the AHL. Sure, the lockout may have played a major role in that third season. He wasn't rushed to the big time, and in fact, when he started to show some signs of pressure, he was returned to Rochester. You have the benefit of giving these kids time to develop (for Enroth, that assumes Miller is re-signed) at that level and you should stick to it.

It's in an area that doesn't have an idea of what hockey truly is. I think Ollie would be FAR more consistent in Buffalo. People in Buffalo have a passion for hockey. You cannot compare MOST Florida bandwagon fans to people who grew up w/ a passion for hockey in Buffalo. Buffalo fans are special.

I thought the same way. just to put players like that in our system and Lindy let them play their game. Ollie is very out spoken, which could be a good thing vs. Lindy; without creating a negative. (does that make sense?) Bouwmeister is quality all around IMO on defense. 25 strong minute every night.
gregkash Posted June 1, 2008 Report Posted June 1, 2008 Tom, do you ever quit? "perception or reality, it doesn't really matter". You can't be serious. You're smarter than that. Perceptions *like that referenced in this dime-a-dozen NHL article* are as fleeting as a fart in the wind. Reality is what matters. And fans and writers alike know squat about what's really going on behind the scenes. There's a lot more that goes into these decisions than a few offhanded remarks by a college coach might suggest. And you so easily elevate his words above the *assumed* attitudes of the Sabres. That, Tom, is the hallmark of extreme bias. Why don't you write a letter to Sabres management apprising them of their questionable acumen? Or maybe you should offer your insight and services to the team, seeing as how you always know better? College coaches always make statements of advocacy about their players. Comments like this are commonplace and meaningless. People had to cry and whine and fret over Gerbe, and now it's Kennedy's turn because some writer puts an article together. Chicken Littles everywhere. And they turn on a dime. Embarrassing? It's THIS type of reaction that's embarrassing. I.... I.... think I love you.

There are probably more WNY'ers and folks from Ontario and Quebec in that area than you can imagine. The trouble isn't drawing hockey fans from the area, the trouble is drawing Panther fans.

He is a decent goalie..Franchise goalie remains to be proven to me..We led the league in goals 2 yrs ago and outgunned alot of teams with our scoring, we won games with our offense not our defense and goaltending..He made some really good saves along the way I just dont think to this point he has proven to be a 6 to 7 million dollar player..He could still turn out to be that Franchise goalie I dont think he has earned it yet..He is a step behind Henrik the Ranger IMO..
