spndnchz Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 So is Paul Devorski the Eva Longoria, or Marcia Cross of hockey? not a piece of cake game so no Cross. If it was he who had the puck go off his ass, then Eva. :w00t: Go East!!!
spndnchz Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 One of the best games in recent memory ... let's just hope it ends on a good goal, not some garbage ... SabresFan526 Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 Wow, what theatre. BTP, there's no way anyone can complain about tonight's game and the long OT. This is what hockey and sport is all about. Sykora calls it that he will score the game winner, gets a penalty and is almost a goat, and then comes back scores the game winner on the PP. How's the PP set up? Rob Scuderi taking one for the team with a chop to the face from Jiri Hudler drawing blood. And you want to talk about the utmost of sacrifice is Gonchar coming out for the PP. He does not play at all for the first 2 OTs because of what I imagine is a pretty bad injury and comes out and not sure if he's credited with the secondary assist or not, but is on the ice for the PP goal. And, Malkin gets the assist on the game winner after an absolutely terrible game tonight. The guys that needed to step up for Pittsburgh did with Hossa getting a goal and an assist, Crosby with 2 assists, Malkin with an assist on the game winner, and Sykora finally welcomes himself to the Cup Finals with the game winning goal that he called to keep the series alive. How could anyone not love this kind of drama? BTP, if anyone says OT or playoff hockey needs to be changed, then they have no idea what drama, excitement, courage, and passion are. I love this game!!!!
will Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 christ, i love redheads. and screwdrivers (yes, i realize it's a sissy drink, but it's HEALTHY...kinda).
carpandean Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 Amazing game! Detroit was the better team in OT, but an unfortunate high stick penalty cost them the game. I want Detroit to win it, but now I'd like it to go to game 7 so that they skate the cup at home.
will Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 55 saves...holy schnikies. "beware the wounded penguin" - d. cherry
That Aud Smell Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 holy shnikes - the folks who watched and posted until the glorious/bitter end have my respect. with the alarm clock set for 5, i just couldn't soldier into the third ot, couldn't do it. fleury stood on his head, and the sykora prophesy is the stuff of legend (but a legend that will be immortalized only if the pens can somehow pull this out).

Definitely feeling it today. For a series where Detroit was 40 seconds away from hoisting the cup, what will probably be forgotten is the OT officiating. 1 phantom interference call, 1 extremely borderline interference call, and a legit double minor all going against Detroit. Essentially Devorski penalized Detroit for going to net and having all the jump in OT. Credit to Pitt for standing against wave after wave of Detroit rushes. But there is something wrong when the dominant team is forced to a perimeter game because of the way a Stanley Cup overtime is officiated.

But there is something wrong when the dominant team is forced to a perimeter game because of the way a Stanley Cup overtime is officiated. This probably should be a seperate thread, but since you brought it up ... they were bad goalie interference calls for sure ... but here's the thing .. In one of the OTs, one linesman waved off icing, while the called it when the Wings touched the puck ... the Pens complained, rightfully so, they got together and agreed they screwed up, faceoff at center ice. Good job. Similarly, the officials will ask the linesmen for help if a player is cut, what did they see, make sure it was an opponent stick and not the puck, etc, to get it right ... so here's my question ... why is it that the ref in the neutral zone can call goalie interference when the guy perfectly positioned 15 feet away makes no call, and they do not talk about that? what if the guy below the goal line sees him pushed in and the other guy missed that? The idea is to get it right ... if they can discuss some things, why not that? I know it's a slippery slope, you don't want one guy waving off hooking calls the other guy makes ... so maybe you just say only the down low official can call crease infractions like goalie interference, something like that, so it's not overruling ... I don't know, just not right the same ref can make the same call from that far away twice in overtime of a Cup final game ...
Buffalo Wings Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 One of the best games in recent memory ... let's just hope it ends on a good goal, not some garbage ... Also, and let me preface this by saying this is NOT how I feel personally, but get ready for the "great game but it was way too long, hockey has to change playoff OT to grab the casual fan" B.S. tomorrow ... of all the things they might tweak for marketing purposes, they better never change this. Heck, I think it went too long, but only because I couldn't stay awake. No way they should change the format. This is the best part of playoff hockey. A cup-winning goal could come at any moment. That's three consecutive good (if not great) games in this series. This one shows the heart that the Penguins have...tying goal with 34 seconds left and your goalie on the bench and they survive a few Detroit onslaughts throughout the first two OTs.
Doohicksie Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 I like the Red Wings, having lived in Detroit for 6 years. As a Wings fan, this was a tough game to watch.... especially the end of regulation and the end of the game. But as a hockey fan, it was pretty glorious. I picked the Wings in 6 and I stand by that. Leading that late into game 5, I thought the Wings had it sewn up, so I was disappointed, but as long as they take it in Pittsburgh, it's all good. One thing I noticed: Pittsburgh's forecheck has rattled Lidstrom. His hallmark is always being in the right place, always getting to the puck first, and moving it up ice fast. By doing this you don't see him having to get physical much. Pittsburgh has made him look mediocre, and he's made tons more mistakes than he usually does. Give props to the Pens. I hope they've spent all their energy though.
Guest Sloth Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 Pitt just needs to keep using the dump and chase. The Penguins have been trying too many passes for the majority of the series. They can't play that style versus Detroit. Dump and chase is what Pitt needs to do to win. When they pass the puck around, they get trapped and Detroit rips off 50+ shots. If it wasn't for Fleury last night, the Wings would be celebrating another Stanley Cup championship. I'll never forget the 2 on 1 Detroit had during the 2nd period. Fleury made one of the greatest saves I've ever seen (A lot of it has to do w/ the magnitude of the situation). I want a 7 game series w/ Pitt coming out on top. It'll be VERY difficult to pull off though. The Wings, even though they have lossed 2 out of 3 games, are on fire. The Penguins need to keep pace, if not shut them down. Go Eastern Conference!

But there is something wrong when the dominant team is forced to a perimeter game because of the way a Stanley Cup overtime is officiated. I think Devorski penalized Detroit because Cleary (I think) skated directly in Fleury without even pretending to avoid him or stop (the second goalie interference call). The first interference call (on Zetterberg) was pretty much the same thing. I'm pretty sure you can't spin the goalie around with your skate. Now, with all the other stuff that went on, that hooking penalty in the 2OT (I think) looked pretty marginal to me. It was a penalty, and I'm generally a fan of the refs calling penalties, but call them all not some minor hook after about five boarding penalties could have been called.
wjag Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 I wonder if Detroit is living a little Buffalo karma. That is almost the Buffalo script if it was to be written. Within 35 seconds of winning the cup. Outplay the other team and lose in 3OTs. Go into game 6, get blown away by the homestanding team and then lose a close game on home ice. I'm not a believer in hockey gods, but do you think those Detoit fans got a little of what they deserved when they were yelling we want the cup with six minutes left?
SabresFan526 Posted June 4, 2008 Report Posted June 4, 2008 For those interested, last night's game was the highest rated Game 5 since 2002. http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/playoffs2008...tory?id=3424706 These are some of the best numbers the NHL has had in a long time. This series hopefully is building momentum back up for the sport. And, again, last night's game is what sport is all about and incredibly exciting. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the game even though I had zero rooting interest for either team. It was just a great great hockey game.

The first interference call (on Zetterberg) was pretty much the same thing. I'm pretty sure you can't spin the goalie around with your skate. I didn't see it that way. There is discretion there, if a goal was scored it could have been disallowed, but calling a minor when you slide head first into the crease I think it is pretty clear that there is no intent to interfere, but the player is going hard to net. (Cleary) The call on Zetterberg I didn't see the skate thing.
R_Dudley Posted June 4, 2008 Report Posted June 4, 2008 Wow, great goal at the end by Talbot. At least the Cup is postponed at least one more period at least. By the way, is it just me or does Malkin look like Maxim Afinogenov this series? He has been a human turnover machine tonight and has been absolutely horrid this series. Guys like Hall, Dupuis, and Talbot are the guys stepping up to score and contribute on offense. But, guess who's got 2 assists tonight? Crosby. Guess who's got a goal and an assist? Hossa. The big boys are stepping up for Pittsburgh. I'm predicting right now that Malkin scores the game winner for Pittsburgh. It would only make sense after having such an awful game and awful series that Malkin scores the winner. Watching closely his play speculation here in da-berg says he has some sort of upper body injury, ribs is a logical guess with the way he is fumbling the puck and the shots being off net and total avoidance of hits. That said I am happy to have watched the pens spoil the party if only for a couple of days. Boy Malone coming back and playing after a broken nose w/o a shield says alot to me. Also Orpik is playing himself into a real nice salary bump this Offseason... Lets see what happens now that there's another game at home for pittsburgh

Was a great game and now after living in pittsburg for awhile the pens after last nights gutsy effort are starting to win me over. Yes gotta love the way a very young team rose to the occasion and even though outplayed for many parts of the game perservered. And I agree Go Eastern Conference... I agree that only one was probably warranted but IMHO thats the warning to both teams to not let this get out of control and deteriorate into running each others goalies/brawl, though that has not been the Pens style all year so really little chance of that. Last with the way Fluery was playing and really did steal one I like the precedent of the officials protecting the goalie and allowing him to play his game w/o fear for his life... I wonder if Detroit is living a little Buffalo karma. That is almost the Buffalo script if it was to be written. Within 35 seconds of winning the cup. Outplay the other team and lose in 3OTs. I'm not a believer in hockey gods, but do you think those Detoit fans got a little of what they deserved when they were yelling we want the cup with six minutes left? Absolutely hear that, always been an underdog fan and gotta love the karma involved in getting your come uppance for celebrating a little too early.. That has never been classy in my book. So David beat Goliath if at least for a game but hey even though everybody gave up on Pgh that's why you play em never know what can happen. Now a game 6 where if by chance you can pull another miracle out hey when it gets to game seven anything can happen. Even though Detroit has been the better team for the most part this series I started seeing some cracks last night in their play. The PP has been very ordinary and I think Fleury is better than Osgood. Now if only Gonchar can play in my book he has been every bit Lidstroms equal for Pgh in this series and has PP and more D to his game then I and allot of people gave him credit for.... So Here's to a Pens win tomorrow and a game seven with one more chance to watch a great game on a Saturday night no less for all the marbles before we go into offseason....... Go hockey, Go east, Go Pens...
tasker48b Posted June 4, 2008 Report Posted June 4, 2008 Shallow thoughts * The Penguins were 35 seconds away from losing the series 4 games to 1. If they can pull out a Cup win here ... legendary * DET looked nervous and tight to start Game 5 .... the Pens looked out of it in the 3rd period after giving up the lead & going so long without a shot (and being outshot 14-4) * Fleury. Awesome performance (the toe save on the 2-on-1 in the 2nd period off Samuelsshon being a highlight reel example) * Series ON * Maybe DET lost game 5 to give the Pens fans something they have never seen - a Cup awarded at the Igloo (ooops ... mellon arena). Both the Pens wins in the 1990s were on the road.
Two or less Posted June 4, 2008 Report Posted June 4, 2008 Games 3 and 5 are absolutely classics IMO and i can't believe how great both of the goalies MA Fleury and Chris Osgood have played so far. I am disappointed in Malkin though, he is pretty invisible on the ice. I really think Game 6 will be the best game of the series, i think there will be more goals and i think it will be on your edge of your seat type game. As a side thought, i didn't watch almost any round 1 games (couldn't watch with sabres disappointment) but started slowly to watch and been watching more and more and seen almost ever game from the conference finals to now, and i gotta say i am very happy i tuned in. Sabres or not, this has been one of the best playoff years i can remember. Alot of good hockey is being played.

If it wasn't for Pitt's dramatic win on Monday, this years playoffs would've been as bad as last years. But, w/ the dramatic win that advances the series to 6 games, hopefully there will be a seventh, this is a great playoff year. As someone said earlier, the NHL had it's highest game 5 rating since 2002. I'm glad to hear that and I am sure the ratings will be even higher tonight. I'm pulling for the Penguins in this years Stanley Cup Finals! Just out of curiosity, who are you guys pulling for?

Guest Sloth Posted June 4, 2008 Report Posted June 4, 2008 sabres... I was for Pitt but I've switched to Detroit... Just out of curiosity, why Detroit? I support everyone's team they'd like to pull for. It's just out of pure fun curiosity. I, myself, am pulling for the Penguins, because they are the under dog and they represent the ECF. Now, there are times when I won't pull for a same conference team. I wanted Anaheim to destroy Ottawa last year. I also wanted the Giants to beat the Pats. I CANNOT stand that team. It's not because of the success they've had over the years or the fact they're in the same division. It's because of their coach. What kind of dick, although I'm sure a number of teams have/do this, "steals" another teams playbook?
Guest Sloth Posted June 4, 2008 Report Posted June 4, 2008 Are you guys going to watch the game tonight? I can't! I'm visiting the in-laws and they don't care about hockey. So I'll be eating dinner w/ them and talking about things we don't agree upon. Obviously politics will be a BIG discussion tonight. Woo hoo! I'm glad Obama won, but my in-laws will disagree w/ me big time. They're elderly so what can I say? Maybe I should play "the yeah, I agree" method. I will admit I wish another canidate was available. I'm NOT a huge Obama supporter. I just feel he's the best out of the 3 politicians.
