SabreNod Posted May 19, 2008 Report Posted May 19, 2008 There was a thread recently that was inspired by the article in which BC was purported to have said "Buffalo didn't want to pay us". Some people took that as truth and ran whining down the street about how Darcy doesn't get it, while others knew that wasn't the type of thing Campbell would say, and defended Darcy for the excellent GM that he is. Here's Brian Campbell's direct correction, and wake up call to anyone who thinks we have the wrong guy at the helm. WE ARE LUCKY to have Darcy. L.U.C.K.Y. "One recent call Campbell made was to Sabres GM Darcy Regier, although not to discuss his future. The defenseman wanted to clear the air after he was quoted in a story out of Montreal about the departures of several players as saying, ?Buffalo didn?t want to pay us.? It was mentioned at the Sabres? year-end news conference. ?I never said that,? Campbell said. ?I actually called Darcy and left a message. I think Darcy is a great person and a great GM. I have a lot of respect for Lindy, too. Lindy is, and I?ve heard from other players, one of the best coaches in the NHL, if not the best coach in the NHL. I have too much respect for those two individuals. I did not say that.? http://www.buffalonews.com/sports/sabresnh...ory/349518.html
spndnchz Posted May 19, 2008 Report Posted May 19, 2008 I saw this too. Stand up guy that Campbell fella.

While there are indeed some posters who would run Darcy, and Lindy for that matter, right out of town, the majority of us, on both sides of the fence, lay the blame right at Larry and Tom. Notice how Brian didn't say anything about them?

Notice how Brian didn't say anything about them? Good point and I think over time it has become more and more clear that Darcy and Lindy are unfortunately in the middle of the situation. Larry and Tom have their view of how to run things, and ultimately, Darcy and Lindy have to take those orders and do the best they can. It's a tough situation that I think would be a bit easier if you remove Quinn from the picture and let Darcy communicate with Golisano directly, without interference. I obviously have no proof that Quinn is in fact interfering, but I'm not sure how he's a help to the team or how he's even qualified for the role. When has he been successful? What are his credentials to justify handling player contracts? Darcy is a real GM, and has been for years. Quinn has nothing on him.

He calls Darcy to say that he never said, "Buffalo didn?t want to pay us," and you read into that that it is a slap in the face of TG & LQ because he didn't mention them? I'm all for Quinn's removal, but I have a hard time seeing Campbell's comments as anything but good will...

I'm all for Quinn's removal, but I have a hard time seeing Campbell's comments as anything but good will... as in... Agent: "Brian, you're on the market soon, we need to tie some loose ends" Brian: "like what?" Agent: "well, remember that time you called Buffalo cheap" Brian: "yeah, so, they are" Agent: "well we need the other teams to know you're a team player so you get the big money" Brian: "Hello, Darcy?"

When I was in College we were all supposed to be liberal idealist with nothing but good thoughts and no belief in hidden agendas. It wasn't until we started earning the big bucks that we were supposed to become conservative realist protecting what we had and thinking there were ulterior motives behind everything.

So you're saying that the absence of a "clearing" reference to those guys means he agrees with you about Larry and Tom? That'd be a pretty silly claim to make. C'mon...

You can only be the liberal idealist with nothing but good thoughts and no belief in hidden agendas when you trust the people around you.

In college I learned how to make bongs out of nearly anything, eat food that would make a vulture sick and master the art of toilet paper theft. All real world applications if you ask me!

All real world applications if you ask me! as a 24 year old still in college i like to feel im getting my advance degree in making connections so i can eat free/drink free and also learning how to steal household supplies from super china buffet.
apuszczalowski Posted May 20, 2008 Report Posted May 20, 2008 Careful, Apus will be here any minute now. Sorry, Holliday weekend so I wasn't on the computer So he calls up Darcy to say that a comment he made was taken out of context. Sounds like a nice thing to do if he didn't actually make the comment, and Campbell does seem like the type of guy who is a nice guy and do something like that. Its also not surprising that he would do something like that to make sure he didn't burn any bridges being a UFA this offseason, and having wanted to stay in Buffalo. I'm glad Mrs. Regier was kind enough to point out how he is such a great GM, and how some of us have it wrong that he could do anything wrong.
