matter2003 Posted May 14, 2008 Report Posted May 14, 2008 These teams are on a crash course for each other... Penguins have lost 1 time in the playoffs, and the Red Wings only once since game 4 of the first round... The young superstars versus the old guard... That should be one heck of a finals matchup...
Two or less Posted May 14, 2008 Report Posted May 14, 2008 I agree. And it's not like Detroit doesn't have any offensive powers to promote, Zetterberg and Datsyuk are some of the best players in the world. Along with Malkin and Crosby, this could be a very highly watched Finals.

SabresFan526 Posted May 14, 2008 Report Posted May 14, 2008 Unfortunately, don't bet on it. Actually, I disagree with that. This would be the NHL's dream scenario. The best team against the two of the best talents in all of the NHL. You're looking at four of the top 5-6 players in the NHL playing in a series like this. And, basically, the best defenseman of his era in Nik Lidstrom. This may not be a huge ratings booster necessarily, but I could guarantee that it will be more watched than either of the SCFs since the lockout. Another great thing about both of these teams is that they do not play boring, trap defensive hockey. They are both very sound defensively but have tremendous offensive firepower. I think it would be great for the NHL if this series came to fruition. I don't think it will necessarily revive the NHL, but it may be the series that puts the NHL back on the map of the U.S. sports landscape, especially if it goes 7 games. This plus the Winter Classic would really give the NHL some good press which it has desperately needed since the lockout. I look forward to this series if it happens. It will be fun and exciting and great for hockey as a whole.
Chief Enabler Posted May 14, 2008 Report Posted May 14, 2008 The marketing will get screwed up somehow, but it is a dream series for the NHL. You would need more squid segments, no Brett Hull, and some primetime NBC slots.
apuszczalowski Posted May 14, 2008 Report Posted May 14, 2008 I don't know if the NHL would really be happy about this Both Finals are looking like they are going to be sweeps, so they are losing a potential of 6 games, and the excitement of seeing closer series. I Doubt many people who aren't diehard hockey fans really care about a Detroit/Pittsburgh final. How many people outside of Michigan and pittsburgh are going to tune in specifically to watch those games? (although that could be said of any team in the finals) The one thing that saves them right now is Crosby being in the finals, cause Canadians will tune in to watch Sidney try to win a cup, and since theres no Canadian teams left for them to cheer for, they have to move down and just cheer for a player. I just can see any of these potential series drawing more fans in outside of Hardcore hockey fans (who would be tuning in anyways, and the home markets of the 2 teams playing
bob_sauve28 Posted May 14, 2008 Report Posted May 14, 2008 I really think the Flyers would be doing much better if their defense wasn't so depleted. How well I don't know, but they sure are not being blown out now. Should be a good finals though.

How well I don't know, but they sure are not being blown out now. Should be a good finals though. That's all I hear about here in Flyer-country. It started before the series when Timmonen went down. "We're DOOMED!", they said. I told them to come back when they lost another D-man or two, then I'll commiserate. :)
darksabre Posted May 14, 2008 Report Posted May 14, 2008 They aren't lacking in defense though, they need someone on that team to make some Offense. Hossa can't be the only one scoring goals. Where's lil Danny? Oh right...doin nuthin.

So, for Sabres fans, since we didn't make the GD playoffs anyway, a shorter playoff season is actually better for the Sabres (since a lower cap is better for the Sabres). As for the actual matchup, I'm looking forward to it. Detroit seems like a well-coached, veteran, superbly-executing team. Pittsburgh seems like the 80's Oilers at the beginning, with a great mix of amazing skill, grit, defense, goaltending, experience and leadership. I really don't know yet who I'll pick, but I'm leaning toward Pittsburgh.
Hawerchuk Posted May 14, 2008 Report Posted May 14, 2008 Should be a great series. I will put my money on Detroit to win it over the Pens. I think they are just too strong. Would like to see Crosby get a Cup, but I think the Wings will win it all. Now if it was Philly vs Dallas for the Cup... it would suck seeing one of those teams win it. I can't stand either. Nothing against Danny, Marty or Stu and Modano on Dallas, but losing to those teams haunts me and I never want to see them win anything - ever again!

I think so too, but I don't think it will be easy. Detroit's biggest weakness loks like its goaltending (but only because of age), but the youth of Pittsburgh could surprise us all

I didn't think that they'd be able to handle the Rangers experience and goaltending, but they just walked all over them. I thought Biron might have been able to steal this series, but they've figured him out quick. Like I said in another thread, I'll be surprised if the Pens lose more than 1 more game. They have the superstars (Malkin, Sid, Hossa), the consistency (Sykora), the vet leadership (Roberts), the physicality (Laraque), the offensive defenseman (Gonchar, maybe Whitney) and the stay at home D-man who will lay you out (Orpik, Gill). Oh yeah, and they have one of the best up-and-coming goalies in the league, M. A. Fleury. And they're deep. There's no holes in their game. None.

apuszczalowski Posted May 14, 2008 Report Posted May 14, 2008 It's not just Laraque ... the whole team is playing physical ... that's how you win in the playoffs ... Exactly, Even Malkin is jumping into Brawls whn he could just skate away and let the "tough guys" take care of it. AS for Fleury, I will have to see a bit more from him before I would name him the best up and coming goalie right now.
DR HOLLIDAY Posted May 14, 2008 Report Posted May 14, 2008 So far this has been the worst playoffs I have ever seen.
Hawerchuk Posted May 14, 2008 Report Posted May 14, 2008 So far this has been the worst playoffs I have ever seen. I'm curious as to why you think that? Too many sweeps or done in 5 games? Buffalo not in it (even though they would have gotten killed!)? Not bashing you, just asking.
Hawerchuk Posted May 14, 2008 Report Posted May 14, 2008 And they're deep. There's no holes in their game. None. I wish the Sabres didn't have so many holes in their game!! :death:
shrader Posted May 14, 2008 Report Posted May 14, 2008 If 5 people watching instead of 3, yes, its a ratings increase, but it still means little in the big picture.
DR HOLLIDAY Posted May 15, 2008 Report Posted May 15, 2008 I'm curious as to why you think that? Too many sweeps or done in 5 games? Buffalo not in it (even though they would have gotten killed!)? Not bashing you, just asking. Yeah man, well first off the no Sabre thing really sucks. But too many 5 game series, not very intense if you ask me. And now in the Semi's, we are looking at two sweeps, BORING as hell, I can't get into this at all and I have never had this happen to me....................... :censored:
Kristian Posted May 15, 2008 Report Posted May 15, 2008 It's not just Laraque ... the whole team is playing physical ... that's how you win in the playoffs ... Wish someone would've told the Sabres that, last year. Oh wait, I forget - Ottawa sent us a memo, loud and clear.

X. Benedict Posted May 15, 2008 Report Posted May 15, 2008 Philly is undone. No defenders left to push the puck to the forwards. The forwards are stuck in the neutral zone. No puck support to get a shot to net, no point shots or anyone to move up. The Pens are excited about their new found defense. (a 1-2-2? blah!) That's why this series is a yawner.
Kristian Posted May 15, 2008 Report Posted May 15, 2008 and then Anaheim didn't send them a memo they hand delivered the message Enjoyed that very much

Yeah, but they sent it through a fax to the FO, and TG hasn't made it a priority to fix that fax machine just yet...............
