BamBam Posted April 15, 2008 Report Posted April 15, 2008 Gerbe Speaks NEWTON ? Two days after capturing an NCAA crown, Nathan Gerbe found himself at a crossroads ? the intersection of win and win. The conquering hero of the Frozen Four either can return to Boston College for his senior season or can turn pro and join the Buffalo Sabres, who made the 5-5 dynamo a fifth-round pick in the 2005 draft. ?He?ll have to look at all the pluses both ways,? coach Jerry York said. ?There are no minuses.? ?Either way it?s a great decision,? Gerbe agreed Monday night after finishing up a marathon autograph session following the national championship celebration at BC?s Conte Forum. ?Coming back here you would grow as a kid and also develop as a player. If I do go pro, it?ll give me a great new environment to try to develop in.? With five goals and three assists in the two games at the Frozen Four, including two scores in the 4-1 title-game victory over Notre Dame, Gerbe?s stock has never been higher. He wound up leading the nation in goals (35) and points (68), although he was denied the Hobey Baker Award. For now, Gerbe said all he cared about was basking in the glow of BC?s third national title (1949, 2001). ?I want to soak this in,? he said. ?I don?t want to be worrying about something else and not be able to cherish this memory. It?s not something that I?m really focused on, but I certainly have a tough decision to make.? --------------------------------------------------------------- Who will be the first to read into his comments?
carpandean Posted April 15, 2008 Report Posted April 15, 2008 Well, since he's trying to enjoy being part of a winning team and not taking away from that for himself or his teammates, I would assume that, if anything, his comments would be slanted toward staying. Since he said that it's up in the air right now, that bodes well for him signing this year. From sabres.nhl.com about Gerbe: As for contract talks ... "We do [expect to more towards contract talks]," said Regier. "We're going to talk to his family advisor to see if there's an interest in having him turn pro. It's something that we will pursue."

I think the red part is the key to the whole thing. The only way Gerbe's stock goes higher is IF he is the scoring leader in the NCAA AND wins the Hobey Baker next year. Since the chances of that happening are not guaranteed, I think he signs.
K-9 Posted April 15, 2008 Report Posted April 15, 2008 Contrary to what his coach says, there are minuses if he goes back to school. What are the chances he leads the nation in scoring again? What are the chances he wins another title? What if he gets hurt? What does he have left to prove at the collegiate level? Unless he equals or betters this year's performance his stock can only go down. Unless he has a profound dislike for the Sabres' organization (and that's possible given our FO blunders), this kid is going pro. GO SABRES!!!
nfreeman Posted April 15, 2008 Report Posted April 15, 2008 Well, between Gerbe, the defenseman from U. of Denver, and the other college kid (Kennedy?), next year's pool of prospects suddenly isn't so shallow. We can also include Weber, MacArthur (unless he's no longer eligible to be sent down w/o clearing waivers -- not sure what his status is), Enroth and the 2 first-round picks we have this year.

Unless he equals or betters this year's performance his stock can only go down. Great points all. Still, given some recent CBA education I received here, it's not clear to me that having "high stock" can make a big difference with rookie contracts. That is, maybe he can sign this summer for 3 years (?) and the rookie max (~$875k/$65k) -- or, if he were to return to BC and see his stock slip (or worse), he could end up signing in 2009 for 2 years (?) and .65-.75 of the rookie max -- just doesn't seem like a huge difference. But even if there's no real urgency to sign while his stock is high, I still think he signs this summer. Right now, he's rightly focused on nothing other than living the dream as the undisputed king of a sunny springtime Boston College campus. B-) Once he works his way through that, I think he'll see that now's the time to sign and see what's what with his prospects as a pro.

From sabres.nhl.com about Gerbe: What's family advisor, is that a term to get around having an agent in college? Also, I think Gerbe will be signing sometime this summer. Now that he has a championship, he doesn't have much incentive to stay at BC.

outlaw16511 Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 A family advisor is an agent. Any player that has been drafted has one. That would make sense. I guess in NCAA hockey he would have to have an agent if he's been drafted already. Yeah, I was retarded on that one. It's not like college football and stuff where guys aren't drafted and still playing college football.

It's not like college football and stuff where guys aren't drafted and still playing college football. It's a strange situation though. They're not allowed to have agents so they all have these family advisors. I'm not sure exactly how it works out, but I'm guessing the advisors can't be paid until after they sign. Actually, a lot of the undrafted have them too. I can dig around a bit and figure it out.
Two or less Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 Anybody see Gerbe last night at the Bruins game? He was wearing a Bruins t-shirt.... not too sure if i liked that. lol

shrader Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 Watcha gonna do? He's from there. I understand it. Actually, he's from Michigan.
inkman Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 Actually, he's from Michigan. Little #%^$#!ing two faced prick! So if he ever signs with ths Sabres, which obviously is a big if because of his Bruins love, is he going to want to sign with the Red Wings when he's a UFA because he's from Michigan? I figure it's never too early to start worrying about stupid #%^$#!.

Yeah, but i havn't seen Kane cheer for Sabres since being traded. I did wear Sabres gear before the draft when Sabres played Ottawa last year in the playoffs though.
