inkman Posted April 14, 2008 Report Posted April 14, 2008 Chris Gratton for Daniel Briere, not a blunder.
Bmwolf21 Posted April 14, 2008 Report Posted April 14, 2008 The Sarich-for-Gratton deal is yet another example of a GM thinking his team/coach/franchise can turn around an enigmatic player who shows flashes of immense talent but never seems to put it all together. That trade gives me hope for trading Max.
inkman Posted April 14, 2008 Report Posted April 14, 2008 The Sarich-for-Gratton deal... Lest we not forget that Cory took a looooong time to develop as well. Sabres fans would not have been patient enough for him. Tampa was a perfect place for him to do so.

Tampa was a perfect place for him to do so. At the time, the trade made sense given where the team was and appeared to be heading. While I have been accused of looking back in hind sight too often, I try to stay consistent with what I was feeling at the time. Another thing to remember about Sarich, fans were as high on him early in his career as they are now high on Weber and Sekera. It is why I keep cautioning those who think this pair is ready for top 4 status and especially those who think they are top pair status.
inkman Posted April 14, 2008 Report Posted April 14, 2008 Daniel Briere for..... Every team has free agents that leave.
That Aud Smell Posted April 14, 2008 Report Posted April 14, 2008 Lest we not forget that Cory took a looooong time to develop as well. Sabres fans would not have been patient enough for him. Tampa was a perfect place for him to do so. Great point -- I recall liking what we saw from the kid and thinking that we were letting go of someone who was going to be a very good pro -- but the trade at the time made sense, albeit carried some risk. The snarky talk of "Briere for ..." misses the point -- Darcy deserves praise for turning that sow's ear into a silk purse and, in so doing, giving us the best chance that, IMO, we ever had at winning the Cup in 2005-2006.
X. Benedict Posted April 14, 2008 Report Posted April 14, 2008 I think Mike Keenan is the perfect coach for a Sarich. Nice game last night, but I don't think those nights are very common. He timed that hit just right on a pinch. Most of the time he misses and looks like the guy running for the last car on the train.
SabreNod Posted April 14, 2008 Report Posted April 14, 2008 Daniel Briere for..... Nothing, which was the right deal considering another team wanted to pay him 8 million per year, which is about 3 million too much for a guy with no defense to his game.

Or, more to the point, we were leading the league and were a serious cup contender, so we couldn't trade him at the deadline. They had decided before the deadline that he was going, but determined his play and team chemistry for the rest of the season and cup run were worth not getting something for him in return. It would interesting to know what would have happened last year if they had traded him (possibly indirectly through deals with two team) for a big, physical, veteran defenseman to anchor the blue-line, with Connolly taking his place between Hecht/Pominville during the rest of the seaon/playoffs. Pure hindsight and speculation, but hmmm ...

One could also argue that a pro-active GM like, say, David Poille could have extracted something out of Philadelphia after the playoffs in order to give them a leg up on Montreal. Let's not forget, according to Danny, Montreal offered more.

A pick, even low round one, or a prospect for negotiating rights might turn into something.

Tampa was a perfect place for him to do so. You're right on. I remember when he was here people used to rip on him. It wasn't the caliber of ripping that Kalinin or Lydman (deservedly) get, but I'd say it was mid-level ripping. I know I was happy when we traded him.
bob_sauve28 Posted April 14, 2008 Report Posted April 14, 2008 How many former Sabres are in playoffs now? Here is my list, am I forgetting anyone? Drury, Biron and Danny of course. San Jose has Greer, Campy and Curtis Brown Dallas has Barnes and Bouchier Minnesota has Carney Calgary has Sarich [and Primo?] Pittsburg has last years back up goalie--forget his name

Look at Jersey Gomez is in NY Nedermier is in Ana.... doesn't really mean much. It just hurts more cuz we're not in it.

Given that Buffalo leads the league in players drafted playing in the league, they are likely to have more players still playing.

tom webster Posted April 14, 2008 Report Posted April 14, 2008 I doubt it. I think the case could be made, that Jersey and Buffalo have had the most high impact free agents leave if the most actual number since the lock out
