Sherman Posted April 14, 2008 Report Posted April 14, 2008 Avery is a tougher more talented version of Matthew Barnaby. He can score a goal and then get a penalty. He is great when he throws a team off their game and he takes stupid penalties when he doesn't. I loved watching that winning goal go off his skate.

Sherman Posted April 14, 2008 Report Posted April 14, 2008 I thought that skate was Staal's. The announcer where I saw the replay said Avery. I didn't see the game so maybe he was wrong. I hope it was Avery.

I just checked, it was Staal. Losing will have to be pain enough. And for what its worth, anyone notice that now that NY has speed up the middle the ice seems to be in decent shape at MSG. Just sayin'.......

Buffalo Wings Posted April 14, 2008 Report Posted April 14, 2008 Rule 75.4(iii) Any player or goalkeeper who, after warning by the Referee, persists in any course of conduct (including threatening or abusive language or gestures or similar actions) designed to incite an opponent into incurring a penalty. this does cover it. How does that cover it? I haven't heard anything indicating that the ref warned him to knock it off - and his teammates warning him doesn't count. If we know for sure that the ref warned him, then you have a point. I don't remember that Avery "gestured" towards Brodeur at all, but otherwise, he did nothing threatening or abusive. This doesn't mean I defend what he did, since I think it was over the line. I'm just saying that I don't think the rulebook says he couldn't do what he did.

I think it's more than fair to infer that the Ref(s) had said something to Avery in the course of play -- that, to me, would explain why one of his own teammates was telling him to knock it off.
millbank Posted April 14, 2008 Report Posted April 14, 2008 A player cannot wave stick in a players face in the manner he did. It was threatening and taunting. The issue can be muddied for talk show content, but the rule is present , and it was clear in this case. That his team mates told him to knock it off tells that they disapproved and got that it was wrong. This only a issue in so far as hockey players do have a code of respect that applies for all , which Avery's team mates voiced their disapproval to him about. It was not smart wise or anything else, its was unsportsmanlike conduct. Such garbage is only found in beer league hockey and demeans the game to a level of circus act. The rule is clear , it is present, it just need be applied, if he had not used his stick their would not be any issue, that fact is he did. Apart from the ruling of what he did, his actions where flat out stupid. Its much like the Tie Domi incident a number of years ago where in the final minute they Leafs having won the game , and all the momentum on their side , Domi cheap shotted the Devil , caused a rallying point for Devils when they were clearly down , the Devils went on to win series with wind out of Leaf sails. It will be interesting to see where this Devil - Ranger series goes now. Avery's actions were far from smart or wise they were stupid and disrespectful. How does that cover it? Goodfella25 Posted April 14, 2008 Report Posted April 14, 2008 He wouldn't be getting away with that if Scott Stevens was still playing, I'll tell you that much. They don't make em like that anymore. Somebody needs to give Avery a beat down and I can't believe through all of the regular season nobody answered the bell. Not even old-school types like Gary Roberts.

Fair enough....I just didn't want to assume the refs said something to him, but I didn't know one of his teammates had a chat with Avery.

Not only were they stupid because of the disrespect he showed, I thought it was stupid because of two reasons.....he could have easily taken a puck to his back while having no clue where/when it was coming and he almost forced the Rangers to be shooting from one side of the ice if they didn't want to drill him in the back. My bets are on David Clarkson to "re-introduce himself" to Avery in the next game or two.

millbank Posted April 14, 2008 Report Posted April 14, 2008 Pests like Avery do eventually have to account for their actions. Players around the league see such and Avery will get little grace if his head is not up. The game was tight last night, no way could the Devils deal with him in the present , but the time will come and if not a Devil another player on another team will . Kind of like Samuelson , with his knee on knee's ove the years and other cheap shots. when Domi suckered him the rest of the league cheered. It does come around when the game and players are disrespected. It hurts all. Not only were they stupid because of the disrespect he showed, I thought it was stupid because of two reasons.....he could have easily taken a puck to his back while having no clue where/when it was coming and he almost forced the Rangers to be shooting from one side of the ice if they didn't want to drill him in the back. R_Dudley Posted April 14, 2008 Report Posted April 14, 2008 Mirtle is always good reading: http://mirtle.blogspot.com/ Thanks now that I get to see it that clip at the end defintely shows the ref skate up and point at his stick and probably say to keep it down. Man just the implied gesture to hit him in the head not once , twice but several times, yikes. I cannot believe nobody creamed him for that, they probably were all in shock as well seeing what he was doing...... This guy does deserve a beat down in the worst way....
That Aud Smell Posted April 14, 2008 Report Posted April 14, 2008 It just dawned on me - and maybe it's been addressed above - that Avery's tactic was probably (in his warped mind) peculiar to a 5-on-3 powerplay - i.e., he devoted himself totally to his antics because his team was up 2 guys, not just 1.
millbank Posted April 14, 2008 Report Posted April 14, 2008 Colin Campbell has issued a advisory on Rule 75 ( unsportsmanlike conduct ) clarifying and adding a minor penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct will be issued when a player positions himself in front of the net and wave stick in goal tenders face and positions himself in a manner other than to score.

millbank Posted April 14, 2008 Report Posted April 14, 2008 Yes and no. The rule was there , its been clarified. It did not occur to anyone a player would behave in such a fashion. No doubt it will be called Avery rule. At issue will be some thinking Avery wise , other seeing him and his actions as disrespectful to the game and its players when such misconduct come up. It would be unfortunate that some will conclude Avery wise for exploiting something with no provisions , the rule was in place, but it did need be clearer. NHL Directive: INTERPRETATION OF RULE 75 ? UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT NEW YORK/TORONTO (April 14, 2008) -- National Hockey League Senior Executive Vice President and Director of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell today issued the following advisory on the interpretation of Rule 75 - Unsportsmanlike Conduct: "An unsportsmanlike conduct minor penalty (Rule 75) will be interpreted and applied, effective immediately, to a situation when an offensive player positions himself facing the opposition goaltender and engages in actions such as waving his arms or stick in front of the goaltender's face, for the purpose of improperly interfering with and/or distracting the goaltender as opposed to positioning himself to try to make a play." Another rule created and named after a douche-bag.

And Drury comes over and says something to him as well. I'd love to see someone kick Avery's butt all over the rink.
matter2003 Posted April 15, 2008 Report Posted April 15, 2008 Technically, what he did wasn't illegal - he never touched Brodeur nor were his skates in the crease. He was playing like a cornerback covering a WR in the NFL. That said, I don't know how smart it is....he could've been drilled in the back of the head with a deflected shot. I thought it was a bit over the line, since one could take that as taunting the goaltender. Then to top it off, he scores 15 seconds later. He's the biggest PITA to every team in the NHL except for the one he plays. Well, its illegal now... 2 minute unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for doing that...
carpandean Posted April 15, 2008 Report Posted April 15, 2008 And Drury comes over and says something to him as well. I've put all the FA crap of last year behind me, but man I miss Drury. He is just a good guy, straight shooter, true competitor. I bet he went over and said something like "turn around and play; we're better than that." He'll play his ass off for a win, but would never resort to something as unsportsmanlike (officially now, but it really was before the rule change, too) as what Avery pulled. If that POS (Avery) ever wears the blue and gold, I'm going to find a new team to be fan of.

I'd really like to hear the on-ice audio of what Avery was saying to Brodeur (heard it was some stuff about Brodeur's divorce/ex-wife) what the official said to Avery, what his reaction was, and what Drury said to him. I'd also like to hear what Avery ahd to say to Dru after he scored - that had to be a little awkward...

I just saw the replay this morning and it was clear that Drury (who was the Ranger player occupying a Devil d-man in front of the net) leaned over and said something to Avery *while the play was going on*. The ref then was jawing at Avery after the puck left the zone (I'll eat my crow on that one). Drury never ceases to impress me with his professionalism. I hope that DR is smart enough not to pull off a trade for him, especially since we have Kaleta.

I'd sooner root for the Cryers than see that piece of filth in a Sabres uniform.
