carpandean Posted May 1, 2008 Report Posted May 1, 2008 He was on the Sabres and leading the team in scoring in the playoffs, just like he did the previous year. Assists are important, but often times second assists have very little to do with the goals being scored. Sometimes, first assists are more important than the goal itself (ref: Roy bouncing puck of Vanek's arm or shin), but there are, on average, over 1.5 assists per goal (Sabres have averaged over 1.7 assists/goal over the last two years) in the NHL. So, right, wrong or indifferent, the points from goals will always be considered "better" or, at least, will get more attention than those from assists. Last year, he had quite a few assists, but only 3 goals in 16 games. That put him in sixth place for goals behind Drury (8), Vanek (6), Max (5), Hecht (4) and Pommer (4). This year, he has 8 goals in 11 games! When thinking about performance, 8 goals and 14 points in 11 games will always be considered significantly better than 3 goals and 15 points in 16 games. Thus, the "where was he last year" sentiment. Again, this is a statement about perception, not necessarily about reality. SwampD: nice use of GUGE; we will get it into Websters!

Good post, although I'd note that I don't think there is any way of knowing how many "first" assists he got last year (or any year) vs "second" assists. In any case you are right that he's more of a force in the playoffs this year he was last year. (Although it's worth considering that there are mitigating factors -- he faced better goalies last year in the 1st 2 rounds -- DiPietro and Lundy -- than this year -- Huet and Price/Halak; the Sabres had a more balanced attack last year than Philly has this year, etc.) I was just protesting the implication that he was somehow not present last year.

Also, the word was out for months on how to beat the Sabres, as to where nobody's really sure how to play Philly at this point, becuase they apparently have turned it on at exactly the right time. Buffalo was pretty much playing regular season hockey in the playoffs, and the only reason we made it as far as we did, was more due to the mediocrity of our opponents, rather than us playing well.

Thank you, my point exactly. DB has been the outright leader of that team in the playoffs. I don't know if the whole DB/CD captain thing had anything to do with last year, but DB has been a man on a mission this year. Last year he was helping the team, not taking over the team. I would love to have him back right now, even though he would be playing golf, although if he were still around, maybe the Sabres would be too.
carpandean Posted May 2, 2008 Report Posted May 2, 2008 Briere is no Johan Franzen. 10 goals is 10 playoff games this season and he cost Detroit $9,100,000 less than Briere cost the Flyers this year. :worthy: Edit: make that 11 goals in 10 games with his hatty. :w00t:

Franzen just redirected another one in front and it's now 7-1 Detroit and goal #11 for Johan...
ExiledInIllinois Posted May 2, 2008 Report Posted May 2, 2008 Just a shameless bump (even know it was already up there!) "Ohhhh no, there goes Tokyo, go go Dannyzilla! They say the Habs have got to go, go go Dannyzilla!"

Edit: I think that is in a four game series (I'm not even sure if they played seven games series back when Howe played.) Edit 2: Trivia question: what number did Gordie Howe wear in his rookie season and who wore his eventual number, 9?

Detroit will win the Cup........AGAIN!!!!!!! This time with Osgood in goal. Best move was Detroit bringing McCarty back. Wtf? Some teams just know what to do. I am guessing Detroit Vs. Pittsburgh for the Cup with experience winning over youth for the outcome. Detroit in 5.

Does this remind you of the Islanders and Oilers 1983? The passing of the torch. The Red Wings win their last and the Pens go on a historic run?

Bringing Forsberg back (and trading for Salei and Foote) were still good moves for the Avs. Forsberg was 1-13-14 in 9 regular season games and from the trade deadline the Avs went from one point out of the last playoff spot to 6th in the conference. For $1M I would have been fine with Buffalo bringing Forsberg on for the stretch run. Forsberg is no more to blame for the Avs' struggles in this round any more than McCarty gets the credit for Wings beating the Avs. Colorado is out because they got physically beat up in this round - losing Smyth, Statsny, Wolski and even Forsberg missed a game - and no one could slow down Franzen. Detroit still has to get by Dallas, and right now that's no easy task.

Of all the ex-Sabre Captains still alive in the playoffs, I want Stuuu Barnes to hoist the Cup before the others who's names I forget.

ExiledInIllinois Posted May 2, 2008 Report Posted May 2, 2008 25 pages and going strong!!! Go Danny!!! Its Dannyzilla Mr.!!! Go go Dannyzilla!

He picked up one this season in the last Carolina game (goal was the eventual game winner, too.)

GoatheadInCT Posted May 2, 2008 Report Posted May 2, 2008 Agreed. DOUBLE agreed. STUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!! :chris: (Can Pittsburgh advance and escape the PHI Briere! *COUGH*/MTL winner? hmmmmm.....)
Mike Oxhurtz Posted May 2, 2008 Report Posted May 2, 2008 "History shows again and again How Bettman points out the folly of men!" LMAO!!!! That's awesome!!! It goes to show you how the Sabres are the farm team of the NHL, when how many ex-Sabres have either made it to the playoffs & how many are still playing.
carpandean Posted May 2, 2008 Report Posted May 2, 2008 How to add five pages to this thread: Hypothetically, do you think Detroit would put Danny on their team? If so, how much would they be willing to pay for him? There has been a lot of talk about them being one of the best-built teams in a long time. Add to it that their coach was quoted as saying something along the lines of "it's great when your best players are skilled in every aspect of the game, because no matter the situation, you can put them out there." I wonder if they would even consider him for a spot. Discuss.

It has been pointed out manyt times before that Detroit is the creme of the crop among hockey franchises and thus an unfair comparison. Obviously with Zetterbery and Datsyuk, they have no need for a player like Danny and thus wouldn't pay him big bucks. I have no doubt, however, that if Detroit didn't have one of those two and decided that they needed offense, that Danny would be high on their list. Its not like Detroit hasn't had to employ one dimensional players before like Brett Hull and molded them more to their liking. Couple of other points; 1) Detroit and Pittsburgh may be the only teams that would have no interest in Briere as a top 3 forward. 2) Detroit employs 14 members in its scouting department including 3 full time european scouts and a director of european scouting. In addition, Ken Holland, their GM, makes regular visits to Europe to personally scout players. You just can compare any other team to their standard.
