Bmwolf21 Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 People still read Bucky Ecklund? I can see from this example he is as insightful and thought provoking as ever. If the Sabres can free up that extra $3 million? This should be a great off-season. After seeing the Pen's Malone more and more I think I would like the Sabres to take a run at him. While I know what I should expect going in, I can actually read an article objectively and decide whether it's more garbage or whether it is an actual decent column. The one was the latter. He didn't full-out attack the Sabres' FO, he didn't rail on and on about the Black Sunday fiasco - my take was he simply said that despite the mistakes of last offseason, the Sabres have a chance to make things right this summer and set the team up for the next five years or so, starting with moving Max, letting Kalinin walk, making some of the tough decisions on guys like Timmy and Ales, finding some of the pieces to reshape the roster (2nd-line center, veteran leadership, backup goalie) and repairing their reputation with the players by working hard to lock up the next group of core players about to hit FA.
stenbaro Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 I can't quite put a finger on what my feelings are about him. Maybe I'll write him a poem about this... B-) lol..that was kinda funny
X. Benedict Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 Max is $3.333 million in cap space and a roster spot on an overfilled front. I would trade him for picks or prospects to free those up. I am betting Max can draw somebody offsides....even in a trade.

deluca67 Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 The only way Malone makes sense is if you leave Hecht at center and you can find someone to take both Timmy and Ales. I would much rather they go for a center and move Hecht back to wing. I love the highlight clip Malone, if he brought this every night, Pittsburgh would have locked him up. Maybe he would be that player that took it up a notch but signing him would either make Hecht a $3.5 million third left winger or their number two center, neither of which appeals to me. Why not bring in Malone and pick up another center? Why not have Hecht as the third left wing? Why would it matter what he made? Having a Hecht on the third line would mean you added some quality personnel at the top of your lineup. That's a good thing. At least I thought.

My experiement on NHL08 with Malone on Sabres didnt work out on a 3yr deal, neither did Bernier. FWIW :D

Its a great thing if they plan on spending over $50 million in cap space. Remember the ripple effect, also. Suddenly you have Paille playing the fourth line. Just do th math. Hecht with Malone would have to be their second line along with Pominville and I don't like Hecht at center.
carpandean Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 I don't like Hecht at center. Me neither. Great winger, but only an "OK" center. I've said before that I liked Hecht-Gaustad-Pominville better than Paille-Hecht-Pominville (and no, I'm not advocated Goose be a second-line center.)

Seth Greenstein Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 Can I be the only negative guy on this thread? I believe that Max is now an ill-fitting part on this team. And yes, this year, he was horrendous. But when asked the question, why wouldn't Darcy say something to the effect that "although Max had a rough year last year, I am very excited about his potential and the ability for him to come back and be a real leader on this team, an attribute that I believe he has in spades." If that was his quote, I'm positive we'd crash this web site again. But at the end of the day, this trading stuff is all about posturing. If Darcy had postured that way, crashed this site, but then was able to drive the price up on Max, then who cares, it's a win for the Sabres. My concern with this quote is two-fold. 1. Is Darcy playing the reverse psychology card I referenced above and that this is an effort to get him driven to play better? If that's the case, I'm very scared because that means he'll be back. 2. If Darcy was speaking nothing but the truth here and the intent is to move Max, did the Sabres just lose some quality in the return? If it's a pick, did they just lose a round or two of position? If it's a prospect, did the Sabres move down a notch in the quality of the prospect? My concern is that nothing really positive can come of this quote except the chance that Max comes back, is motivated by the quote and plays well. But that's a scenario that I don't think anyone really wants to see, I think most would be happy to cut ties and move on. Please don't flame me too badly and Wee Whaler, my intent is not to make this a thread devolving into "Our management sucks, our players suck, etc" and all the other stuff your signature says...

My sig comes from SabreFan526 I think, last week. :) I did not realize that came from the keyboard of SabresFan526. Funny guy, met him a couple times in real life... My logic may be twisted (and that may speak more to my own craziness than anything else), but as soon as I read this article, the 1st thought that came into my head was that Darcy being honest could cost the Sabres some value in a potential trade... Just my 2c (which of course is only 1.8 Canadian cents).

I get the feeling that Lindy and the FO are at the end of their collective rope with him, and are using the media to let the NHL know that Max is on the market. I think that after several years of coaching Max, Lindy knows whether these comments will motivate him or whether he will shrug them off and keep doing his thing, and I am sure that Darcy and Lindy talked about Max specifically and how they want to handle questions about him. I don't know what the Sabres could realistically expect in return for Max, so I don't know whether these comments will affect that value. It could push the value up a little, if a couple more teams express interest, or it could push his value down a little, if opposing GMs perceive this as "the Sabres are desperate to get rid of him."

Sorry, but "Tom 'Spinner Spencer' Webster" ideas on what the lines may or should be doesn't carry much weight. Just my opinion.

I thought you were better than those who want to add everyone but don't care how they fit in, guess I was wrong. This isn't fantasy sports, players have roles and their salaries have to fit in the structure.

outlaw16511 Posted April 13, 2008 Report Posted April 13, 2008 I think it's time for Max to go. He's one of those players that takes two steps forward and then two steps back and ends up at square one. He had a great 06-07 because he played a team game. This year he seemed to do his own thing a lot and over handled the puck which got him caught in bad decisions resulting in a lot of turnovers. If Max could get that 06-07 form back, I wouldn't mind having him on the team. I doubt that's going to happen though. I think we should trade him and use his money to better the roster. I think there is a team or two out there that would take Max and give us a decent return.

outlaw16511 Posted April 13, 2008 Report Posted April 13, 2008 Good first post, and welcome to the board. Thanks, it's good to be here. I've often though Edmonton would be a good place for him. They have real fast ice at Rexall that fits his game. The downside is that it won't happen after last summer's debacle with Lowe putting an offer sheet out on Vanek.
