GoatheadInCT Posted April 10, 2008 Report Posted April 10, 2008 Does anyone, when they see Crosby, think of what he might have been had fortune smiled on the Sabres and we had obtained his rights instead? Could you imagine how much exposure we could have gotten and the playoff possibilities this year? I can't help but think of what could have been when I see him on the TV!!
inkman Posted April 10, 2008 Report Posted April 10, 2008 ...think of what he might have been had fortune smiled on the Sabres and we hadobtained his rights instead? What you call fortune, I call being the worst team in the league. That is how you obtain players like Crosby.
Sherman Posted April 10, 2008 Report Posted April 10, 2008 What you call fortune, I call being the worst team in the league. That is how you obtain players like Crosby. Not in the Crosby draft. Every team in the league was in the lottery. Which goes back to our fortune. The previous season we would have been in the running for Crosby, or at least a 5th pick. Because of the league wide lottery we slid to 13th.
stenbaro Posted April 10, 2008 Report Posted April 10, 2008 What you call fortune, I call being the worst team in the league. That is how you obtain players like Crosby. That year we had a better chance to land Crosby than the pens if I am not mistaken..It was the draft of the lockout year and they drew numbers...We drafted Vanek..They are pretty close the same player in one aspect though.....MONEY
stenbaro Posted April 10, 2008 Report Posted April 10, 2008 I think I am wrong about the player we drafted though..It might have been the year after we drafted Vanek...So excuse the sarcasm..LOL
apuszczalowski Posted April 10, 2008 Report Posted April 10, 2008 I believe Buffalo had one more ball in the lottery then the Pens, because the Pens lost 1-2 for previous #1 picks in the last couple years. I think Buffalo was tied for the most chances to get him
inkman Posted April 10, 2008 Report Posted April 10, 2008 I think Buffalo was tied for the most chances to get him Did anyone seriously think the Sabres ever had a chance? This is Buffalo people.
nucci Posted April 10, 2008 Report Posted April 10, 2008 Plus the Penguins were in danger of being sold and moved. Crosby was the answer to save the Penguins.
apuszczalowski Posted April 10, 2008 Report Posted April 10, 2008 Plus the Penguins were in danger of being sold and moved. Crosby was the answer to save the Penguins. It really makes you wonder. hmmmmmmmmm
BuffalOhio Posted April 10, 2008 Report Posted April 10, 2008 Buffalo picked Zagrapan. Yeah, that's working out quite well, eh? The only guys picked in the first round after Zagrapan that I would rather have are Matt Niskanen and Andrew Cogliano.
Buffalo Wings Posted April 10, 2008 Report Posted April 10, 2008 There's no point in worrying about this. The Sabres didn't get a chance to draft him, so let's move on. Wayne Gretzky aside, you don't necessarily need a superstar or someone full of hype to succeed.
SwampD Posted April 10, 2008 Report Posted April 10, 2008 It really makes you wonder. hmmmmmmmmm It doesn't make me wonder at all. The same thing happens in basketball...Jordan leaves, Chicago gets the 1st pick.
nucci Posted April 10, 2008 Report Posted April 10, 2008 It really makes you wonder. hmmmmmmmmm The bigger shock was the Rangers didn't get him.
sabregoats Posted April 10, 2008 Report Posted April 10, 2008 That is the problem with lottery draft systems, there will always be the suspicion of foul play. Especially when someone like Crosby is up on the block. There was no question he was going to be a great player.

Yep completely agree but one thing I did see last night watching the penguins dismantle ottawa that you absolutely need is a group off guy's playing togther with chemistry and standing up for each other. Happened multiple times but 2 significant ones, 1.) when redden was taking some cheap shots in crosby's face with stick and 2.) when lapoint got in Fluery's kicthen face after Fluery sticked him in the family jewels from behind for getting too close to crease... , The pens players stepped up immediately and in. Even though they got penalty's coach Micheal Therian said " He expected that because this team is very tight and because of the chemistry" That was sorely lacking in Bflo this season....

That is the problem with lottery draft systems, there will always be the suspicion of foul play. Especially when someone like Crosby is up on the block. There was no question he was going to be a great player. And the flip side of using a non-lottery system is the suspicion of teams actively or passively throwing games to get themselves into the top draft spot. There's always going to be questions and conspiracies no matter which system they use.

wjag Posted April 10, 2008 Report Posted April 10, 2008 What you call fortune, I call being the worst team in the league. That is how you obtain players like Crosby. With a little effort, we can be that..
Taro T Posted April 11, 2008 Report Posted April 11, 2008 I believe Buffalo had one more ball in the lottery then the Pens, because the Pens lost 1-2 for previous #1 picks in the last couple years. I think Buffalo was tied for the most chances to get him Nope, the Pens, Sabres, Rangers, and Blue Jackets all had 3 balls in the hopper. Although they drafted Fleury 1st overall, that knocked a ball out for the Canes as they had traded picks with the Pens that year. Malkin was 2nd overall and Whitney had gone 5th the year prior to Fleury. Neither pick affected Pittsburgh's status in the lottery.

And yes, you are right, now I remember, cause i questioned them not losing one since they drafted Fleury, but then remembered that the pick wasn't originally theirs

Every single team thinks exactly the same thing. Well, except Pittsburgh.

And yes, you are right, now I remember, cause i questioned them not losing one since they drafted Fleury, but then remembered that the pick wasn't originally theirs It was 3. There were about 16-18 teams with only 1 ball in the hopper, 4 with 3, and the rest had 2.
StunningCombo Posted April 11, 2008 Report Posted April 11, 2008 Does anyone, when they see Crosby, think of what he might have been had fortune smiled on the Sabres and we hadobtained his rights instead? Could you imagine how much exposure we could have gotten and the playoff possibilities this year? I can't help but think of what could have been when I see him on the TV!! If Crosby and Ovi played for the Sabres there would still be 0.0 Sabres coverage. If Peyton Manning, Randy Moss, and LT played for the Bills there would still be 0.0 coverage. If the Cavs moved to Buffalo and became the Braves again. It would be LeBron who? Buffalo is universally disliked across the country and considered irrelevant. We alienated the country by losing 4 straight Super Bowls no one wants to be associated with a loser or be remembered that they rooted for the little dogs to get one. We have to win something to prove we're worth the attention. They barely promoted Miller, Campbell, Drury, and Briere when we had them and we proved the country right in ignoring Buffalo by letting them all go. Thats just the way it is.
