carpandean Posted April 8, 2008 Report Posted April 8, 2008 Brian Campbell - Best defenseman in the league ... Wow, if Darcy made that list, then he's even dummer than we thought.
frisky Posted April 8, 2008 Report Posted April 8, 2008 Plus, he spelled his own name wrong in the spreadsheet. :P
shrader Posted April 8, 2008 Report Posted April 8, 2008 I hope a few more people register here just to re-visit that already dead topic. Bring something of value to the table or don't bother showing up.
StunningCombo Posted April 8, 2008 Author Report Posted April 8, 2008 How is the topic dead? The Sabres have a lot of work to do. Starting with signing Miller on July 1 2008 to DiPietro type numbers. The organization has to start paying players what they deserve and not trying to take a stab at the playoffs on the cheap. I hope a few more people register here just to re-visit that already dead topic. Bring something of value to the table or don't bother showing up.
inkman Posted April 8, 2008 Report Posted April 8, 2008 The organization has to start paying players what they deserve and not trying to take a stab at the playoffs on the cheap. You mean like Roy and Hecht?
stenbaro Posted April 8, 2008 Report Posted April 8, 2008 You mean like Roy and Hecht? I think they should not sign any freeagents at all..If they develop someone let him go elsewhere and let the other teams reap the benefits of their hard work..Oh and if they make a steal of a trade make sure not to sign them when their contract is up also..I wouldnt want us to get to comfortable at the top of the standings..LOL
carpandean Posted April 8, 2008 Report Posted April 8, 2008 Oh and if they make a steal of a trade make sure not to sign them when their contract is up also.. They were trying for the buy low, sell high strategy with Briere, but that pesky cup run got in the way of the second half.

shrader Posted April 8, 2008 Report Posted April 8, 2008 DiPietro numbers? I really hope you're just talking about the annual salary and not the years. If not, there's no bother even responding.
Bmwolf21 Posted April 8, 2008 Report Posted April 8, 2008 DiPietro numbers? I really hope you're just talking about the annual salary and not the years. If not, there's no bother even responding. Why not? What's wrong with signing a 27-year-old goalie to a 15-year contract? I mean it's not like he'll be in his 40's when the contract ends, right? Wait....
Mike Oxhurtz Posted April 8, 2008 Report Posted April 8, 2008 Darcy Regier has some work to do. Also, for his To-Do list, should be: "Go back to school, and take contract negiotiation and contract management classes". Not to be insultive, but Regier's Contract skills are terrible.
StunningCombo Posted April 8, 2008 Author Report Posted April 8, 2008 Good Point we better not sign Miller either. We can get by using our Amerks while we still have them. Maybe thats the idea, instead of renegotiating our deal with the Amerks we can just necome an AHL team in the NHL. Who needs a minor league team? Why not? Bmwolf21 Posted April 8, 2008 Report Posted April 8, 2008 What's wrong with a long contract for Miller? Nothing, if by long you mean 5-7 years. Anything past that and you're into "well on the wrong side of 30 + declining skills + high cap number" territory.
X. Benedict Posted April 8, 2008 Report Posted April 8, 2008 What's wrong with a long contract for Miller? He's already under contract next year. Do you think his stuff will still be good at age 44?
shrader Posted April 8, 2008 Report Posted April 8, 2008 Hell, why stop at 15 years. Let's give him a lifetime deal.
X. Benedict Posted April 8, 2008 Report Posted April 8, 2008 Hell, why stop at 15 years. Let's give him a lifetime deal. Why stop with a lifetime? This guy has motor.
inkman Posted April 8, 2008 Report Posted April 8, 2008 Do you think his stuff will still be good at age 44? If it isn't, his partners will suffice if they choose to have kids.
Done Posted April 8, 2008 Report Posted April 8, 2008 I hope a few more people register here just to re-visit that already dead topic. Bring something of value to the table or don't bother showing up. Yeah!!!! The nerve of those people in Israel to keep talking about the 1940's........ Let's all gather round the campfire, hand Quinn a C-Note, then sing some Goo Goo Dolls songs. By the way....has Regier said anything at all? I seem to see Larry Quinn quoted in all the things I have read the past week. Hmmmnnnn?????
StunningCombo Posted April 8, 2008 Author Report Posted April 8, 2008 The point is we need to sign him. How about half of DiPs contract? 35 is the new 30. Its not 1978. Athletes know how to take care of themselves. You still have Hasek and Brodeur stopping pucks on the other side of 37. Brodeur is still as the top of league in stats. You can tell Miller is focused and determined to be the best. The Olympic chip on the shoulder still helps with motivation. I don't have any question he'll be top of the league in 2018. The number he would sign to now for 2018 would be peanuts to what starting goalies would be making then. Plus if you look at the young talent in the NHL and the upswing the NHL is making in growing cities like DC, LA, and SanFran\Silicon Valley. The cap is only going to increase. The Sabres and Cap problems will never happen with Regier rubbing his nickels together. He is a blue chip player we lost two (Soupy and Drury.) Lets keep one of them. Nothing, if by long you mean 5-7 years. Anything past that and you're into "well on the wrong side of 30 + declining skills + high cap number" territory.

If Miller is at the top of the league ten years from now, then good for him. He'll be 37 at that time, so it will be amazing if he is (and I doubt he will be.) 35 might be the new 30, but no matter how much athlete conditioning, nutrition and preparation have improved (which they have) nothing stops the natural slowing of reflexes. The line between success and failure is so slim for goalies - off by 1/10th of a second and it's a goal - so most guys cannot hang on that long. Guys like Hasek and Roy, who played well past 35, are guys who re-invented themselves. Dom is no longer the flopping, stop-it-any-way-possible goalie he was in the past. He also benefits by playing behind from an awesome defense that limits SOG and prime scoring chances. I like Miller as much as anyone on this board, but I don't want to see the Sabres financially handcuff themselves with a 7-year contract - not for anyone. I didn't like the Vanek contract then and I don't like it now. Personally I wouldn't go long than 4-5 years when they re-sign him - that gives them plenty of time to rebuild the defense around him and gives Enroth plenty of time to learn the NA game and grow into an NHL starter.

If we don't give him at least a 6-year deal, he is gone like the others. We also won't be able to attract that top 4 UFA defenseman everyone wants with a 4-year deal. That's just UFA reality in the NHL.
