bob_sauve28 Posted April 7, 2008 Report Posted April 7, 2008 I keep hearing we need a tough guy defenseman. I'm mre concerned with a guy who will get the puck out of the zone. But I'll listen, who do you guys like out there tht is a tough, "in your face" defenseman?

But I'll listen, who do you guys like out there tht is a tough, "in your face" defenseman? When I think of a tough defenceman I think he has to be be willing to play physical and hit. Standing someone up at the blueline and not just sweeping your stick in the general direction would be nice. He doesn't need to drop the gloves all the time but he should be able to clear the crease and let people know that getting in the goalies face is not acceptable. My concern is we give up our zone to easily and we don't take exception when people run our goalie.
nfreeman Posted April 7, 2008 Report Posted April 7, 2008 The best one of those in our division is Komisarek. The best one in the NHL is Pronger.

But I'll listen, who do you guys like out there tht is a tough, "in your face" defenseman? Pronger Chara Jovanoski Hatcher (no thanks) Foote (UFA) Colin White Aaron Ward (UFA) Volchenkov Jason Smith (UFA) - future Sabres' captain? Probably not. Komisarek Exelby Chelios (UFA) Orpik (UFA) I just went through all the D-men at NHLNumbers.com, and this is the list of in-your-face guys I came up with. Guys that are generally a pain-in-the-ass to play against. Dirty, make-you-pay-in-front-of-their-net type guys. You know, the kind of guys Buffalo doesn't have.
LabattBlue Posted April 7, 2008 Report Posted April 7, 2008 I'll settle for someone who plays defense first(minimal brain cramps in his own end) and can make the simple pass to clear the puck out of his own zone. If he also plays physical, GREAT. If he is also a fearless shot blocker, GREAT. If he also drops the gloves when needed, GREAT.

carpandean Posted April 7, 2008 Report Posted April 7, 2008 Did you watch the Stanley Cup finals last year. If so, then Ref: Anaheim.
Bmwolf21 Posted April 7, 2008 Report Posted April 7, 2008 Adam Foote scares me just watching him play. That dude is mean as hell. He completely intimidated the Sabres last year in Columbus. No one wanted to go near the net or in the corners/along the walls when he was on the ice. I'd love to see him in a Buffalo uniform.

Read this though: http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/2008/03/04/...rassing-threat/ I never liked Foote very much, two years ago it seemed like him and guys like Hatcher were done, but the league kind of came back to them by allowing for decapitations within reason under the circles.

If any of that is true, that's ridiculous. Way to be a professional.
carpandean Posted April 7, 2008 Report Posted April 7, 2008 Yup, the "New" NHL is long gone With our luck, LQ and DR will put together the best darn "Old" NHL team, have two great years with long playoff runs (no cups, of course) and then the league will once again choose to embrace the "New" NHL.

Of this list, I like Foote, Jason Smith, and Orpik the best. Of these three, I like Foote the best for a few reasons. First, Foote is a veteran who can bring some leadership to this team, which is lacking, but so can Jason Smith. Foote and Smith are very similar, but Foote has the most offensive upside of any of the three I have named as he frequently played on the PP back in the good ole days when he was with Colorado. Not sure if he did anything offensively with Columbus or in his current stint with Colorado, but he's definitely had the most offensive upside in his career. Orpik is great because he's a hometown guy from Buffalo who would relish the chance to play at home in front of his family. Jason Smith is good, but he's pretty slow and does not have any offensive capability at all, but brings leadership and strong defensive play. I'd be happy if the Sabres signed one of these 3 this offseason.

Moderation is the key - not too much size and grit, not too much skill; not all offense, not all defense. We went all offense - skill, speed, finesse with a dash of grit and defense, and look where that got us.

Claude Balls Posted April 7, 2008 Report Posted April 7, 2008 Jason SMith would be nice. His leadership would be needed as much as his D skills. I don't know if Philly would part with their captain, unless they are planning on giving DB the C next season.

BuffalOhio Posted April 7, 2008 Report Posted April 7, 2008 Who is it that you do not have Phaneuf on this list???? You're right. I totally missed him. Put him at the top, just below Pronger.
Goodfella25 Posted April 7, 2008 Report Posted April 7, 2008 I have always liked Ward...he reminds me of Jay McKee, and this year he's a UFA. Watch how many shots he blocks/hits he throws in the playoffs with Boston. He's definitely a tough competitor I wouldn't mind us signing, and he probably won't cost a fortune.
R_Dudley Posted April 7, 2008 Report Posted April 7, 2008 getting to see allot of Pens games it's easy orpik, still got up side potential and can play with mean streak... Ward also would be good steady veteran presence and defense first style player if we do not re-sign Teppo..
LabattBlue Posted April 7, 2008 Report Posted April 7, 2008 I'de be okay with either Ward or Orpik. :)
SabresFanInRochester Posted April 7, 2008 Report Posted April 7, 2008 You're right. I totally missed him. Put him at the top, just below Pronger. Nice list... Those are certainly the types of players I reference when I think of physical. Thanks for your effort!

I do not think you can afford a roster spot, in the NHL, to someone that is one-dimensional. You need someone to be able to play defense and excel in another area -- Power play, handling the puck, joining the rush, being a physical force, blocking shots. Buffalo needs to have a blend of these guys on the ice at all times.
