tom webster Posted April 8, 2008 Report Posted April 8, 2008 Perhaps you can clear this up for me. I was under the impression that they trimmed the front office layer of scouting (Luce, Martin, Benning) but still maintain scouts in the field. Is that true? GO SABRES!!! They do maintain some scouts in the field who apparently only look at guys after video scouting identifies them. After the 2005 season they released Don Barrie, Rudy Miguay, Mike Racicot and Dave Volek, four of the real foot soldiers who beat the bushes looking for talent. It is TG's belief that all the travel and living arrangements that these scouts ran up was essentially a waste of money. Luce, Benning, Martin and Carriere all left or were allowed to have their contracts expire. Luce(Philadelphia) Carrier (Washington) Benning(Boston) Martin(?)
deluca67 Posted April 8, 2008 Report Posted April 8, 2008 I'm sure that 28 other GM's said "ain't no way I am going to risk having to pay Vanek over $5 million a year and give the Sabres four first round picks as compensation just to call LQ's bluff." Unfortunately, it just took one really crazy GM to say "aw f**k it, let's see just how high they are willing to go." The really scary part is that most of us thought Vanek would take a while before he made that deal look like a good one, if he ever would, and we didn't have to give up the four first rounders, too. While I still think Vanek will prove he is worth his contract, tack on four first round picks and I doubt he would ever be worth that much. The only part that makes this any better is that Pominville/Miller have another year before their contracts are up, so the Sabres don't have to worry about offer sheets (for Pominville) or higher offers (for Miller) for another year. They also said it's a priority to lock these guys up, not that they will be willing to pay any price for them like they did with Vanek. Quinn is just waiting for the two contracts for $25 million over 5 years to print and the Sabres job is done.

Hard to say, most 30 goal scores are worth more than a 1st round pick. I'm willing to bet Novotny, Lacomb, Norranen and Bo Michael Andersson on it.

Yeah, but is a thirty-goal scorer worth $7 million a year for 7 year and four first-round draft picks? Is a 40 goal scorer? Because that's what Edmonton was risking when they offered Vanek that deal. If LQ/DR had let him walk, the Oilers would have banked a lot of their future, both in $ and picks, on Vanek.
shrader Posted April 8, 2008 Report Posted April 8, 2008 Almost all the players drafted previously were seen by Jim Benning, Terry Martin and David Volek. That is why Darcy deferred to Benning when it came time to draft. That is why I smile when Darcy gets too much credit for pre 2004 drafts. I wonder how much traveling they actually did. I'm willing to bet that there have been players we drafted that none of the top brass actually saw play live and in person. I will say that I've seen a decreasing number of scouts at college games I've been to in the last few years.
apuszczalowski Posted April 8, 2008 Report Posted April 8, 2008 Quinn is just waiting for the two contracts for $25 million over 5 years to print and the Sabres job is done. The still using the Dot-Matrix Printers too?
Bmwolf21 Posted April 8, 2008 Report Posted April 8, 2008 The still using the Dot-Matrix Printers too? Yeah, but it doesn't matter - Darcy can't print those contracts until the intern stops tying up the Commodore 64 with "Oregon Trail." You Have Died of Dysentery.

Well, in his defence, the game can be addicting, and Darcy has been tying up the Nintendo playing Blades of Steel against Larry Although I hear Larry is trying to push TG into buying one of those computers with a pentium in it so he can get Sim City to get some ideas on how to re-build Buffalo and the Waterfront

Good points and really hard to know. Hard to know what those picks will mean by 2011 when the CBA expires and those picks will likely be starting professional careers.

Also, those picks don't have to be used on young players in the draft, they can be dealt for help now
BuffalOhio Posted April 8, 2008 Report Posted April 8, 2008 Exactly. Shouldn't Darcy be making the player transactions and discussing that with the media? Man, Quinn isn' even a hockey guy. Probably grew up playing marbles and jump rope!! <_< Or tonsil hockey.
Done Posted April 8, 2008 Report Posted April 8, 2008 Blades of Steel rocked. They were so excited to upgrade to BoS when their copy of Ice Hockey crapped out on them. You know full well that when Darcy picks his roster in ice hockey....it's going to be two skinny guys on defense and a skinny guy and a pee wee up front. Heck, maybe someone can teach Darcy a lesson with a $5 download on their Wii.
