frisky Posted April 2, 2008 Report Posted April 2, 2008 I noticed the one sentence blurb in one of the news articles that mentioned that Timmy's surgery was a success and he would be ready for training camp. We should start a pool now on which body part he will likely hurt next. Maybe he needs more vitamins or something.
bob_sauve28 Posted April 2, 2008 Report Posted April 2, 2008 Biggest question for next year: What to do about Timmy? I want him out there for the PP!
tom webster Posted April 2, 2008 Report Posted April 2, 2008 Biggest question for next year: What to do about Timmy? I want him out there for the PP! Now that he's fixed, pay the rehab expenses, pay the two thirds buy out on him and Max and use the two million you save on upgrading the roster next year.

Well, we know about concussion/head and jaw, knee thanks to Kaspar, groin/abdominal, and torn labrum in the hip. So what's left? Well, he missed a few games this year because of the stomach flu as well, too. So, I'm predicting arm/shoulder injury for next year as that seems to be the only thing left that he hasn't hurt. I feel bad for the guy, honestly, I do. He can be a wonderful player, excellent on the PP, and is a magician with the puck, but boy he's fragile. None of it's really his fault, but it's tough to justify paying a guy who gets hurt all the time and is never on the ice to do the great things he can do.
Bmwolf21 Posted April 2, 2008 Report Posted April 2, 2008 Timmy "fixed?" Not possible, considering we already knew he has girlie parts down there...
frisky Posted April 2, 2008 Author Report Posted April 2, 2008 If I were to put money on it, I think they'll end up re-signing him to an extension cause we never give up on potential. Look how long Kalinin and Max have been around. Plus, with his history of injuries, he could be had at a price that's right for the Sabres.

That, and not to mention his dad is good buddies with Larry Quinn as they went to high school together. So, I imagine he'll finish his career with the Sabres as long as Quinn is here. But, that career could end within the next year or so if he gets another injury, as he is prone to do.

Given that he has already pocketted $5.2 million for the last two seasons, he should play for the veteran minimum.

Yes, let's pay to get rid of guys we can actually get a return from, specifically Afinogenov. You should know this league well enough to know that so many teams like to think they can be the one to get a talented guy on the right track. Hell, just look at how many times Chris Gratton has been traded for a decent return. They will find someone interested in Max. Personally, I think there's still some value in Connolly. We know he can produce while healthy so I have no problem with keeping him around even if he'll only play half a season. He's not a cancer on this team so I'd much rather pay him to play here instead of somewhere else. A buyout isn't a realistic option with the budget conscious team anyway. The money isn't too extreme anyway.

Players who are out of shape get hurt more easily than others in some cases. In Spacek's case he is an aggressive player. Connolly just might not spend too much time in the weight room.
Wraith Posted April 2, 2008 Report Posted April 2, 2008 To me, Connolly is a no brainer. Plug him in as the third line center or use him as a winger on any of the top three. He's not durable enough to rely on as a top line center, that's for sure, but he's well rounded and versatile enough to contribute significantly as a role player. As much as people around here complain about his salary, it really isn't that large and the Sabres aren't cash constrained for next season. His contract expires before contract renewals for Miller or Pominville ever hit the books and if he puts together a solid season next year he could be re-signed at a decent rate, if not, let him try free agency.
inkman Posted April 2, 2008 Report Posted April 2, 2008 He's not durable enough to rely on as a top line center... He's not durable to rely on period. If the Sabres go into next season with him being counted on as anything more than a spare part, I'll be pissed.

The money isn't too extreme anyway. Of course I know there is value in both players, I was just exaggerating my hope to rid ourselves of both players. Timmy only makes sense for me if he is their 13th or 14 th forward, in others words not being counted on. On of my pet peeves is when people always talk about what they want to add to a team, but never want to get rid of anyone. Buffalo can't add the two veterans I feel they need upfront unless they part with somebody. The biggest problem when dealing with Max and Tim may be the fact that Max is apparently TG's favorite player and Tim seems to be of special interest to LQ.

nfreeman Posted April 2, 2008 Report Posted April 2, 2008 I agree with much that has been posted above. I'd be amazed if we bought him out. OTOH, I would not be amazed if he miraculously stayed relatively healthy and had a big year next year -- his contract year. (I'm not saying he's been faking, but players somehow always manage to produce in their contract years). Even if he doesn't stay healthy, I'm fine with keeping him on the team as long as he is not one of our top 2 centers. I have to believe that the Sabres have realized that they can't count on him to stay healthy and play an important role. We need a new #1 or #2 center (with Roy being the other top 2 center). I'm very happy with Connolly as the #3 center, when he is healthy, between, say, Kotalik and Bernier.

If Gaustad grows into that role fine but please no finesse players need apply for that spot.

spndnchz Posted April 2, 2008 Report Posted April 2, 2008 It seems like I'm going against the grain here and probably some of my previous "Mr Glass" posts, but I've just got a good feeling about Timbo. If he gets through the offseason well and makes training camp in shape I think he's got a great year ahead of him. As a CENTER, first or second line. That said, I still think we need a good vet or two on this team to take some weight off Vanek.
apuszczalowski Posted April 2, 2008 Report Posted April 2, 2008 Who cares if he was just neutered, does anyone know when he is having the Hernia surgery?

It was dissapointing because he seemed healthy at the end of last year and was primed to have a good offseason training program to come back in shape. I would not be shocked to see him come into camp in much better shape this fall. This would make him more affective when healthy and help him stay healthy....and set himself up nicely for his next contract. The only catch is how the surgery affects his ability to condition.
