inkman Posted March 31, 2008 Report Posted March 31, 2008 This is something I've been wondering about for the last couple of weeks. W/ a large number of farm system players playing for the Sabres now, do we have enough legitimate prospects in our farm system? To what end? To complete an AHL roster next season? Or for the overall health of the organ-eye-zation standpoint? Either way, the Sabres have signed two college FA to help fill out an AHL roster next year as well as at least a half dozen other players from junior/overseas/college ready to join the pro ranks. I know hockeysfuture does a decent job anticipating where the Sabres prospects will end up but I know it's a little preamute for their diagnosis.

But depending on who you ask, the Sabres are going to just beg, borrow and steal players from other franchises because they're too cheap to fill out an AHL roster themselves.

I know Steve Donner has a large if not more significant role in this but I can't help but feel as if the Sabres are at fault as well in some small way.
deluca67 Posted March 31, 2008 Report Posted March 31, 2008 How many prospects are considered enough. There seems to be two-three "prospects" making an impact on the Sabres every season. Pominillve, Stafford, Gaustad, Paille, Kaleta, Weber and Sekera have made huge impacts already. Others like Ryan and Macaurthur and Paestch have shown the franchise has depth. They still have plenty of prosepects like Card and Funk among others who may be next seasons version of Stafford and Paille. The Sabres also have a great goaltender prospect and two #1's next season to help build.

The more I think about it, the more I believe that the deterioration of the Sabres-Amerks, or more appropriately the Golisano/Quinn - Donner relationship, is playing a huge role in the Sabres' indifferent attitude to the Amerks, and that signing these guys might be bit of a PR move to show another AHL team - Portland, Hamilton, wherever - that of course they will provide players and prospects.

There is no one in Rochester even close to the talent level of Paille & Stafford other than MacArthur. The only Sabres prospects left there are Dennis, Mancari, Zagrapan, Hunter, Card, Funk & MacArthur and I'm not sure how many of them are under contract for next year. The Sabres will need to sign 4-6 AHL FA's in order to run their own farm team next year. That is in addition to signing Gerbe, Butler, Kennedy, Gogulla, Enroth, Schutz, Breault and several other draft picks in the off-season. PS While Funk is a decent prospect(6-7 dman), Card is not. Not only has he had two concussions this year, his play is barely tolerable at the AHL level as evidenced by his demotion to the ECHL last season. Go back 3 or 4 seasons if you want to see when the Amerks were well stocked!

The Sabres cheaped out by going with the dual affiliation for the last 3 years. This way they had a built in excuse for not signing more draft picks and UDFA's. Hopefully they will correct the situation this offseason by becoming a sole AHL affiliate again, but I'll believe it when I see it.

No reason to really go back, we see it right in front of us every Sabres gameday.
ExiledInIllinois Posted March 31, 2008 Report Posted March 31, 2008 Hey... If you were a player in the minors, you should love an organization like th Sabres. Right? What a great organization to get your shot in the bigs with! Or would you want to wallow in the minors? See the glass can be half full.

Although if he played more like Patrick Kaleta and less like Ales Kotalik, he would have been a Sabre long ago. Two-hundred twenty five pounds of soft hockey goo.

As much as one hates it, the wheat must get separated from the chaff!
