Team Strike Force Posted March 30, 2008 Report Posted March 30, 2008 Just for a break from the depressing Buffalo Sabres, any baseball fans out there have an idea how the season will turn out? Here are my predictions AL East Boston AL Central Detroit AL West Seattle Wild Card Cleveland NL East Mets NL Central Chicago NL West Colorado Wild card Phillies AL MVP Ichiro Suzuki NL MVP Matt Holliday No Yankees in the playoffs now that Torre's gone. Girardi's style won't fly as the season gets into August, and Cleveland will edge them out for the wild card. They don't have the quality pitching staff required to stay ahead of the BoSox. I think that Seattle will be the surprise team of the year. They have a tremendous pitching staff, and if it holds up, they'll win 90-100 games, I think. I'm hoping my Phillies win it all, but they'll face tough competition in their division from the Mets and Braves, and may not make the playoffs. Their lineup is solid, but starting pitching is a major issue. I'm thinking that Detroit, after adding Dontrelle Willis to their rotation and Miguel Cabrera to their lineup, will win it all against the Mets. God I hate the Mets and I hate that reason (and Johan Santana, Pedro Martinez, and John Maine) forces me to predict that they'll win the NL pennant. I'd rather not focus on baseball until around the end of May, but the Sabres leave me no choice.

I'm a Tribe fan but I'm not that impressed with the Tigers adding Willis. He has been inconsistent and awful the last couple years - an ERA that has been steadily rising since 2004 (5.87 last year) and only 22 wins over the last two years. Cabrera is a nice addition, but their rotation still doesn't impress me. I think Central is still very much up for grabs and could see Detroit or Cleveland capturing the title.
shrader Posted March 30, 2008 Report Posted March 30, 2008 A lot of people are high on the M's this year, and for good reason (if nothing else, the fact that the AL West is very weak). The question is, if everyone picks them to be a surprise team, are they actually a surprise team?

He has been getting shelled this spring.....

The question is, if everyone picks them to be a surprise team, are they actually a surprise team? I didn't realize that they were everyone's pick. I thought that the Angels were still the favorite out there. Well, then, I withdraw my "surprise team" statement.

I agree that Willis isn't the stud he used to be, and moving from the NL to the AL usually is rough on a pitcher, but in Florida he was in the top of the rotation, but in Detroit as a #3 or #4, it's an advantage over their competition. I'll miss watching him bat, though. He's quite an athlete.

To me it doesn't matter where he pitches in the rotation - his ERA is up, his walks and hits are up, his WHiP is up - I just don't think he's the same pitcher anymore. Add a league switch and new batters to the mix and it could be a rough year for Willis. It could go the other way, but it would be a heck of a turnaround.

The Marlins put alot of innings on Dontrelle's arm early in his career..He might never go back to the pitcher he was when he was dominant..

Well, then, I withdraw my "surprise team" statement. There has been a decent amount of talk. They played pretty well last year until late and now adding Bedard obviously helps. The Angels may have just lost Escobar for the year and that'll have more people taking notice of Seattle.

Actually he hasn't pitched an excessive number of innings: 2003 - 27 starts - 160.2 IP (93rd in MLB) - 5.93 IP/start 2004 - 32 starts - 197.0 IP (49th in MLB) - 6.15IP/start 2005 - 34 starts - 236.1 IP (5th in MLB) - 6.99 IP/start 2006 - 34 starts - 223.1 IP (6th in MLB) - 6.56 IP/start 2007 - 35 starts - 205.1 IP (27th in MLB) - 5.86 IP/start
SwampD Posted March 31, 2008 Report Posted March 31, 2008 It's going to be long and boring? i second this.
Claude Balls Posted March 31, 2008 Report Posted March 31, 2008 It's going to be long and boring? Exactly! Baseball season doesn't start until late September. Until then, it's all meaningless and BOOORING.
LabattBlue Posted March 31, 2008 Report Posted March 31, 2008 I only have one thing to say as a casual baseball fan...ANYBODY BUT THE YANKEES!!!
BrightLights Posted March 31, 2008 Report Posted March 31, 2008 Exactly! Baseball season doesn't start until late September. Until then, it's all meaningless and BOOORING. No games are meaningless in any sport. Yes they play 162 games, but let's say Toronto misses out on the wild card by a game, suddenly that 4 game set against the Royals in April that they lost 3 games to one looms large. I was never into baseball until I went to college and met my roommates who are huge baseball fans. Now I love the game, and opening day is one of my favorite days of the year. AL East: Boston (but that pitching needs to get healthy) NL East: NY Mets AL Central: Cleveland-best pitching in the division NL Central: Chicago Cubs AL West: Angels NL West: Colroado (their pitching scares me as a fan, not as a hitter, but I love that lineup) AL Wild Card: Detroit NL Wildcard: Arizona ALDS NLDS Boston over Angels NY Mets over Arizona Cleveland over Detroit Colorado over Cubs ALCS NLCS Cleveland over Boston Colorado over NY Mets World Series Colorado over Cleveland (I'm a homer after all)
Swedesessed Posted March 31, 2008 Report Posted March 31, 2008 Exactly! Baseball season doesn't start until late September. Until then, it's all meaningless and BOOORING. Hate to say it, but you can say the same exact thing about the NHL
Bmwolf21 Posted March 31, 2008 Report Posted March 31, 2008 Meh start by CC - strikes out two but walks one on four straight and then leaves a two-strike fastball over the plate that Thome crushes.
stenbaro Posted March 31, 2008 Report Posted March 31, 2008 Meh start by CC - strikes out two but walks one on four straight and then leaves a two-strike fastball over the plate that Thome crushes. My alltime favorite announcer is still at it for the Dodgers 50th anniversary..Vin Scully time!!!!! Go Blue
Team Strike Force Posted March 31, 2008 Author Report Posted March 31, 2008 Meh start by CC - strikes out two but walks one on four straight and then leaves a two-strike fastball over the plate that Thome crushes. Jim Thome is one of my favorite players of all time. Indians have to hope that the good Sabathia comes back for the next start. But you have to like a 7 run inning. Phillies putting together a spirited comeback. I'm hoping they can finish the job.
Claude Balls Posted March 31, 2008 Report Posted March 31, 2008 Hate to say it, but you can say the same exact thing about the NHL Not quite. Although the NHL season is long, at least it's a fast paced sport with non-stop action without guys grabbing their johnsons all game long.

Team Strike Force Posted April 1, 2008 Author Report Posted April 1, 2008 Baseball gets me through till NFL.. Gets me through until hockey starts again. I used to love football, but it's getting less and less entertaining as the years go by. I'd still like for the Bills to win, but not nearly as much as the Sabres.
