Guest Sloth Posted March 28, 2008 Report Posted March 28, 2008 '?Whether we can pull it together this year or not, when you look around, the core of the guys getting experience here are 22, 23 years old,? Miller said. ?It?s pretty amazing when you think about it. We?ve got a lot of potential here.?' I hope he means he wants to stay w/ Buffalo, due to the potential they have. Buffalo has to sign Miller and Pominville to LONG term deals. If they do, the Sabres have good years in front of them. If they don't, the Sabres will have tough years ahead of them. Miller and Pominville MUST be signed this summer. Darcy and company had better not wait to offer a great offer...even if it's a little more then they're worth.

Is management and/or ownership going to FINALLY do the right thing in the offseason and show their players and fans that they are committed to winning? Sign the big guys, try and lock up the middle tier guys who are now showing potential BEFORE they have one huge year (like Campbell) and cost too much. I still say they will need one big free-agent signing in the off-season to show that commitment to winning. A stud defenseman along the lines of a Pronger or Niedermeyer would be the guy. I'm not sure who's available this upcoming year though..who does?
frisky Posted March 28, 2008 Report Posted March 28, 2008 I don't see them going out to sign any big free agents. Perhaps a more minor signing, but I think their first priorities will be with the restricteds and, hopefully, Miller and Pomminstein. I could see them trading away some of the pricier veterans though. But, probably, just one if that happened. Edit: Free Agents We got 6 UFA's and 5 RFA's that will probably consume all of DR's attention. However, I would like to trumpet the horn for getting Stu Barnes back again for leadership :

As per usual, most teams are ahead of the curve and have locked up their players leaving very little top end quality in free agency unless you think Wade Redden is in that class. Of course, there is this defensemen out in San Jose who is likely to be the most sought after player.

I'm not sure who's available this upcoming year though..who does? It's not a tremendous UFA market for defensemen. So nothing close to Pronger. Generally a very weak group (depressingly so) ....if you needed 3 pairings out of the this UFA class you are going to overpay for middling talent. Campbell really is the best of them. He is in for a huge payday. The prospect of fishing for reasonably priced help here is not good.... Although I really wonder what Orpik and Roszival would look like paired. I have never been a huge fan of Orpik because his hits often take him on third world junkets. But you have to think that people would think twice about flying through the middle with him back - because jeez, he does hit. Some hometown connections he may be willing to come here and the pens have leverage with Gill. You'll have to overpay for both of them though.

I actually wouldn't mind Rozival on this team at defense thats with assuming we clip a couple players, Kalinin, ? Numminen, ?Lydman. For forwards I would not mind Jarku Ruttu(Pens) or Malone (Pens) for some grit assuming we ditched Max and possibly Connolly even if we had to eat their contracts. And then signn the ones ya got Miller, Pominville, Bernier in that order and last look for another center strong FO specialist that has been horrible this year. Coaching changes I would look for two new assiatnt coaches, one for PP and new Goaltender coach/consultant for Miller, someone who bring out his best
inkman Posted March 28, 2008 Report Posted March 28, 2008 I hope he means he wants to stay w/ Buffalo... He's never intimated otherwise. Only paranoid Sabres fan have.
Bigthuder1636 Posted March 28, 2008 Report Posted March 28, 2008 The Sabres must lock up Miller and Pominville to good deals. I do think that most of the offseason will be focused on that and the RFA we have. Honestly, I dont see them bringing in any Dmen. With the way Weber and Sekera have played of late I think, going off past experience, Darcy will count on both of them to be playing full time with the team next year. As for Jarkko and Malone, I like both players, but we have so many wingers as is. Yes I can see Afinegenov out of here, but I dont think we lose much having McArthur play there next year especially given the way Max has played this year, when he has played that is. After signing our guys I would like to see if they could sign/trade for a 2nd line center. Other than the obvious backup goalie hole I think that it where they need the most help. I would like to bring in a more veteran player, although I think Stu Barnes is a little too old for me. The guy I would really like to see them go for is ANdy McDonald in St.Louis or Daymond Langkow. I dont know if they are feasible to go after, but I think they would really help bolster our roster. I think Langkow is a UFA, but McDonald would have to be traded for. Seeing as St.Louis just traded for McDonald earlier this year it might be hard to steal him away. The other thing we have going is that we do have two first rounders that we could use as trade bait as well. So to sum up Its our UFA's/RFA's, Backup Goalie and 2nd line center. If they did this I would deem that a successful offseason.
tom webster Posted March 28, 2008 Report Posted March 28, 2008 He's never intimated otherwise. Only paranoid Sabres fan have. I don't think he is going anywhere either, but do you really think he would let on to anyone if he was interested in leaving?
gregkash Posted March 29, 2008 Report Posted March 29, 2008 if we could get joe sakic i'd be in heaven.

If he hits the open market he'd be one the first guys I'd target. 20-30 goal scorer, 6-4 224, has a nasty streak? I'd find a way to make room for him. if we could get joe sakic i'd be in heaven. Same here. Even at age 38, Sakic's skill and experience would be a great addition to this team.

shack & duff Posted March 29, 2008 Report Posted March 29, 2008 Which of the Sabres UFA's are worthy of resigning?
carpandean Posted March 29, 2008 Report Posted March 29, 2008 you don't pay sakic to be a 30 goal scorer anymore you pay him because he plays the game like a professional should. Yeah, but he'll still probably give you 30 goals, too ... which is nice! Really, though, what's the chance that he doesn't finish out his career with Colorado?
carpandean Posted March 29, 2008 Report Posted March 29, 2008 Which of the Sabres UFA's are worthy of resigning? Maybe Pratt as a cheap third pair defenseman. Definitely not Kalinin or Tbo. Ryan was playing well on the fourth line when he was injured, but I don't think we need him.

BuffalOhio Posted March 29, 2008 Report Posted March 29, 2008 He needs to get his act together...the Miller team of this year has been a shell of the Miller team we have seen the past 2 seasons... Fixed. Agreed that Miller hasn't been as strong this year, but the team has collapsed in front of him, not to mention the the amount of games he's had to play.

Pratt stays....he is one of the only guys that plays out of charector with passion, he doesnt seem to fit in to the whole "system" but we need another one of him. He is a good example for the Webers & Funks of the world.

I can't blame him for at least two of the Habs goals.
