inkman Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 I really go back and forth on this subject as some regional accents are worse with certain individuals than others.
inkman Posted March 24, 2008 Author Report Posted March 24, 2008 I think my biggest problem with WYers is the word offense. Every announcer jamoke from the area, I hear pronounce it ahh-fence. That is just flat out wrong, and stupid sounding. The word is pronounced aw-fence, or perhaps uh-fence if used as an act commited.
darksabre Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 Anyone ever seen the movie Fargo? Yeah, worst accent ever.
sabregoats Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 The sabres aren't as good as they were last year don't you know.
evil_otto Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 The sabres aren't as good as they were last year don't you know. Hey dare! Youz guys want to go have some beersss and saysages?
Sabretooth73 Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 yins, don-ton, gum bands, red-up, nebby, arn city, its not just another city, to me its another effing planet. i dont get it, i dont like it, i will never accept it or like it, so F it!
inkman Posted March 24, 2008 Author Report Posted March 24, 2008 gum bands, red-up, nebby What do these mean?
Sabretooth73 Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 What do these mean? gum bands=rubber bands red-up=clean/straighten up nebby=nosy they also call subs "hoagies" which i find to be rather ridiculous
inkman Posted March 24, 2008 Author Report Posted March 24, 2008 gum bands=rubber bands Is that better or worse than elastics, you can thank Boston for that one. red-up=clean/straighten up I got nothing. nebby=nosy Does that stem from nosey neighbor? they also call subs "hoagies" which i find to be rather ridiculous I've heard so many synonyms for subs, it doesn't really faze me any more. Grinders, hoagies, subs, etc...
Screamin'Weasel Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 If "Boston" Rob from Surviver, Amazing Race, Survivor (again) and his "celebrity" marriage did anything for me it was to make me realize how much I hate the Boston accent. New York is a close second. Ink, another example of the WNY accent is the word frontier. Many older people here (including my parents) say "frahn-tier" instead of "frun-tier," which is weird as they say "front" correctly. My father-in-law also says "ahn-load" for "unload." They are both like nails on a chaulk board to me.
carpandean Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 French (including French Canadian). It is the most romantic-sounding accent when speaking their own language (or so I'm told), but when speaking English, they just sound dumb. Buhn-huhn-huhn, fool-eesh Ah-mair-ee-cons!
Bmwolf21 Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 I voted for the Boston and NYC accents, but I think the Long Island accent needs a special shout out. I met a couple friends up at Niagara who were Long Islanders, and their accents were brutal.
stenbaro Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 I voted other...My wife has the most annoying accent..Every time I hear it I cringe..
wonderbread Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 I voted other...My wife has the most annoying accent..Every time I hear it I cringe.. me too!

Bmwolf21 Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 you mean LongG-I-landers It's pronounced "LawnGuylanders." ;)
LabattBlue Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 Shittsburgh (for you know who)  I just knew this would be an option in the poll!
Knightrider Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 I haven't voted, yet, but, after living for the better part of the last 15 years away from WNY, I find it a little sad that I have to admit, WNYers do indeed have an accent. Guess I'll go SW Pen for ST73...
chuck schick Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 The big X factor on this is what do the chicks sound like with any of these accents? In my opinion, the best hands down is southern. The worst is a toss up between Boston and NY/NJ...either way its like nails on a chalkboard, regardless of how hot she is.
SCSabresFan! Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 Come live down South for a bit - you'll welcome someone who speaks without marbles in his mouth.

When I was living in Florida (Tallahassee is more "Deep South" than Florida) that accent door swung both ways - a hot chick with a Southern accent? Ugly chick with the same accent? Not good. Makes them uglier, IMO.
Mike Oxhurtz Posted March 25, 2008 Report Posted March 25, 2008 Besides 1 year in Okinawa, I've been in the south since 96'. And heard all the terminology. Hi y'all doin? Now what we're fixin on doin' here? I reckon! Sometimes it gets annoying.

jimiVbaby Posted March 25, 2008 Report Posted March 25, 2008 Besides 1 year in Okinawa, I've been in the south since 96'. And heard all the terminology. Hi y'all doin? Now what we're fixin on doin' here? I reckon! Sometimes it gets annoying. I went to a Reds game in Cincinnati a couple years ago on a baseball trip (which I highly recommend) and found myself getting so annoyed at the southern accents I couldn't take it. And Cincinnati isn't even in the south. With all my time spent in the NYC region over the past year I have caught myself picking up a few things, but I lose them fairly quickly when I'm back in the Buffalo area. I do get a lot of flak for being a "country" guy because of my WNY accent though.
