cdexchange Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 I saw Neil Young, Pearl Jam & Soundgarden in 93' in Toronto (at the CNE), it was a great show. I was at that show...and IIRC Black Crowes was on the bill as well. What a lineup!
Claude Balls Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 I've seen Metallica 4 times- 91' at the Aud, 92' Rich Stadium, 94' Darien w/Danzig & Suicidal Tendencies (great show) at Darien Lake & 98' w/Jerry Cantrell & Days of the New at Darien Lake (another great show, except my girlfriend-now wife, got a bad concussion at the show). I assume this was with Travis Meeks, before crack ruined his career? It's ashame, that boy could sing and write some great stuff.
darksabre Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 I don't get to many concerts, but I have to say Ozzfest '06 at Darien Lake. Disturbed was AMAZING live as was System of a Down. But Ozzy headlining on the second stage during a flash thunderstorm was just simply surreal. Totally sunny and 90s until Zach Wylde starts playing a sick solo to open the set. Then these big black clouds roll in out of nowhere and it turns into a torrential thunderstorm with ridiculous lightning and pouring rain, for the entire set. Then as soon as Ozzy finishes, it all goes away and the sun comes out again. Freakin crazy #%^$#!.
Mike Oxhurtz Posted March 22, 2008 Author Report Posted March 22, 2008 Been there, done that, and loved every minute of it! Clapton is and always has been my favorite artist ... he is god, after all.Was that the Guns N' Roses, Metallica, Faith No More tour? If so, I was there, too. Great show! I also saw the original Horde Tour in 1992 (Blues Traveler, Phish, Spin Doctors, Widespread Panic and the Aquarium Rescue unit.) It was a small stage and we were right up front. The Tour blew up after that and, while we went to a few more, it was never quite the same. Saw Billy Joel last year at HSBC. Great show (as his always are; thus, why his "number", 12 for 12 straight sellout shows, was put to the rafters in MSG) and Orange County Choppers (from American Chopper) presented his new bike to him during it. Yes that was with Faith No More & GNR.

It's ashame, that boy could sing and write some great stuff. Yes it was. I loved the original album & lineup of Days of the New. It sucks Travis Meeks got hooked on crack and kicked everyone out of the band.
ORSabre Posted March 23, 2008 Report Posted March 23, 2008 Favorite Buffalo shows: Neil Young- The Aud 1986 and 1991 Rush-The Aud 1992 Grateful Dead- RICH Stadium 1989, 1990 and 1993 Ani DiFranco-Sheas front Row 2003 Keller Williams-Tralf shows circa early 2000's
shack & duff Posted March 23, 2008 Report Posted March 23, 2008 Grateful Dead at Aud shortly after Europe '72 release and first concert after Pig Pen died (they did a moving rendition of "He's Gone"); Mahavishnu Orchestra w/ John McLaughlin at Shea's in '72 with a then unknown opening act Aerosmith (weird mix); Aud grouping of Emerson, Lake and Palmer; Dr. John; Chuck Berry and Malo (circa 1974); Aud grouping of Savoy Brown and Fleetwood Mac (before they went completely commercial).

Mahavishnu during the Birds of Fire period, that must have been special...wonder if that show is on tape somewhere...
shack & duff Posted March 23, 2008 Report Posted March 23, 2008 Mahvishnu Orchestra also played with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra shortly thereafter at Kleinhans, too. Also, Pharoh Saunders and Leon Thomas at the Rivalot Lounge on East Delavan Ave. (more Buffalo Braves fans in attendance than Buffalo Sabres fans there).

MO during the Apocalypse period...nice! Hope you caught that one too...
chuck schick Posted March 23, 2008 Report Posted March 23, 2008 Yes that was with Faith No More & GNR. I caught that tour at Foxboro in Fall of 92....The show had been postponed from an earlier date which happened to be a miserable rainy day and I had one of those suck-the-life-out-of-you colds. Axl then went on to set off riots in Montreal by playing like two songs and walking off, and everyone figured the make-up date in Boston would be crap, too. The day of the concert ended up being one of those great Indian-summer days making for great tailgating and outdoor concert experiences. Both Metallica and GnR went on to give such awesome performances, it seemed they were competing for who was the true headliner...and the crowd loved it! Who would've thunk that would essentially be it for GnR?
shack & duff Posted March 23, 2008 Report Posted March 23, 2008 Did. Also saw Frank Zappa at Kleinhans. UB hosted a lot of smaller concerts including John Lee Hooker, Pine Top Perkins, Sonny Terry and Brownie Magee, Captain Beefheart and Buffalo State had some gym concerts including one featuring Canned Heat (with the worst light show ever).
tom webster Posted March 23, 2008 Report Posted March 23, 2008 Mahavishnu during the Birds of Fire period, that must have been special...wonder if that show is on tape somewhere... I forgot all about ELP at the CNE, had to be early 80's. Carl Palmer was just amazing on the drums. He was is sort of a gyroscope for his solo and was spinning completely around and upside down.

Zappa...damn S&D, looks like you were in all the right places at all the right times. I have this list in my head of bands I would like to see/have seen and at what periods in their careers. Its long, but some notables are: Zappa: during the period that produced Roxy and Elsewhere Genesis: anytime between 73-77 Yes: 1972 Myles: 69-73 CSN&Y: 1970 Stooges: 1973 Grateful Dead: 70-73 There are many, many more, but those are some of the big ones.
McJeff215 Posted March 23, 2008 Report Posted March 23, 2008 I figured since there is a topic on favorite bands, let's hear about favorite concerts. ZZ Top- Recycler Tour 1991 (at the Aud) Clash of the Titans- Featuring Megadeth, Anthrax, Slayer, and Alice in Chains at the old Darien Lake Ampitheater in 91' Pantera, Sepultura & Biohazard- Darien Lake 94' (Phil Anselmo got arrested on stage for hitting a security guard with the mic) Danzig, Samhain- Cleveland, The Agora 99' S.O.D. (Stormtroopers of Death)- The Trock, Philly 99' Van Halen Reunion- DC, Nov 07' I was at that Pantera show, too. The show kind of sucked, but the story is cool. Because the guy got clipped, they wound up playing like 5 songs. I've seen Metallica 16 times... I used to run a fan web site back in the day (96-98). I had a trip planned to Australia to see them a couple of times in Melbourne back in 1998. We started a "play Killing Time in Melbourne" crusade on the website. On the second night, they actually did.. about a minute or so. I wound up meeting Kirk after the show (freak encounter in the parking lot, we had after show passes.. but they stopped and pulled over to sign more autographs and my group happened to be the lucky ones). He recognized that I didn't sound Australian. When I told him who I was, he said they played as much as they could remember for me. Signed my shirt and whatnot. Was a wonderful time!
samothyev Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 All of the Grateful Dead shows I was at...(1983-1995) Most recently was a free show at Gateway Park about 3-4 yrs ago. Weekend after me and my ex-witch split up. Dickey Betts and The Great Southern. 3 solid hrs of great great music. Wasnt really feeling it before Dickey came on stage. Seen him with the Allman Bros a few times and was not impressed he was drunk missong his licks etc... No expectations totally blew me away that night. Govt Mule in Rochester December 06. Just about every Tragically Hip show I have seen albeit Darien Lake (Something about that venue I cant get with...)
sabre31_98 Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 Saw Nirvana OPEN for the Meat Puppets circa 1991 at The Sun Club, a small dive in Tempe, AZ near ASU before "Nevermind" was big. Awesome. But believe it or not, the best live show I have seen (and I have seen a lot) was Willie Nelson at Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix. It was a very intimate venue, a rotating round stage that no seat is far from. I wasn't even a fan but he blew me away.
Rico7 Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 The Who- Rich Stadium '82 Neil Young and the International Harvesters- The Aud '86 ELP, Dream Theater, Deep Purple- Canandaigua 2001(?) Marillion- The Odeon in Cleveland 2004 Stevie Ray Vaughn- Darien Lake '89 (?)
