radiomike Posted March 21, 2008 Report Posted March 21, 2008 First off just wanted to say this is my first post, so please take it easy on me. The last few years I've slowly gotten into hockey via my girlfriend who's a huge Sabres fan. Needless to say I'm hooked now and can't believe I've been missing out for so long. I've been to 3 games this year, and can only consider myself as having the proverbial "beginners luck". My first was the Atlanta thrashing when we put up 10 goals to break our winless streak. The second was Buffalo's first comeback against TB, which was incredible. And I was lucky enough to be at last night's miracle, again, incredible. Hard to imagine I could keep up such a streak, but I like to consider myself crucial to their success. Anyways, enough bio, I just wanted to give a few thoughts from a relatively new fan: -I think the Sabres will forever be plagued by their small market, which is unfortunate because I can't imagine a greater group of fans. That being said, the only way I see some sustained success is by gambling a bit on some of their young guys and locking them up long term in hopes they pan out. Otherwise their market value will catch up after a year or two of improvement and we'll continue the trend of developing players for other teams. Get a core locked up now even if it means taking a few leaps of faith. -Give Vanek another year to step up. Yes he's getting paid too much right now, but don't forget that's not entirely the front office's fault. Had they let Vanek go after Briere and Drury riots probably would have ensued. I like to thank the Oilers in part for this mess. I won't give him a complete pass however, but I think he needs to continue to work to step into that void left by Drury or Briere, or he'll have a miserable time here. His handful of clutch performances I've seen give me some hope... -Max is a figure skating head case, but boy is he fun to watch when he's on. -Miller is a solid goalie who will keep you in games, but won't win as many as we'd like. With our high scoring offense I don't think we need a complete shut down goalie, though one would be nice. The problem is our consistency. If we can sustain chemistry throughout the season we can make due with a guy like Miller. Thad being said, if we can't sign him long term I won't be devastated. We could find another of similar caliber. I still love him though. -Kaleta is a monster and brings what was lacking last year. -Lock up J-POM (sometimes he seems to be the only one aware he's playing an actual hockey game out there) -Sekera is promising, and looks to be a shut down D man if he continues to progress (evidenced by him and Ovechkin) -It's a shame Tim C. can't stay healthy, he really helps our PP -Speaking of power play, it's still painful at times to watch, but its been better than last years playoffs for sure. -Lindy Ruff for president and that about does it for me, again, take it easy, I'm new! Go Sabres!
darksabre Posted March 21, 2008 Report Posted March 21, 2008 welcome, and watch out for Momma Pecoraro
Claude Balls Posted March 21, 2008 Report Posted March 21, 2008 For being new to the sport, you seem to have a good take on the team. Welcome aboard and don't be scared off by some of the whacko's around here. Of course I'm not one of them. <_<

Corp000085 Posted March 21, 2008 Report Posted March 21, 2008 good perspectives and welcome to the board. I do disagree with the miller comments, but other than that, it's spot on. Miller is such a weird goalie... On most nights, he's just good enough to win a game. However, if the game is tight, or its playoff time, miller turns into a conn smythe type of player. Miller's shutout numbers are horrible for a top 3 goalie, but i still think he's a top 3 goalie and he needs to be locked up long term as the cornerstone to the franchise. I loved what you had to say about vanek. It's so hard to grasp the fact that he's like 22 or 23 now. Not a bargain at $10 million this year, but maybe next year he'll be playing to his potential. Lastly, there will be no mention of girlfriends without links to hot pictures.
Claude Balls Posted March 21, 2008 Report Posted March 21, 2008 You sure about that? Um, why do you ask? Is it that obvious?
Bmwolf21 Posted March 21, 2008 Report Posted March 21, 2008 Um, why do you ask? Is it that obvious? Just pulling your leg a little, Rayzer...or am I? Nah, just kidding...it's getting late and I'm getting a little tired and loopy. I'm reformatting and reloading my mp3 player, but I didn't think it would take this long...

Bmwolf21 Posted March 21, 2008 Report Posted March 21, 2008 Good luck with that, I don't even own one yet. I think I'm about to go take a little siesta myself. It's an older Dell Pocket DJ - 5 GB - and when my desktop hard drive died last week, I had to go through my Napster library and update all the files and songs, and I realized tonight that my mp3 player had a lot of dead links/files that the Napster software failed to remove. So instead of going through them one-by-one I just reformatted the drive and am reloading the songs, but it's taking forever to transfer them over.
inkman Posted March 21, 2008 Report Posted March 21, 2008 -Max is a figure skating head case, but boy is he fun to watch when he's on. I believe a call to the whiner line put it quite eloquently. "People who like Afinogeov are either chicks, or people who know nothing about hockey."

I don't get it. You just started watching the Sabres and became a fan. Man why did you pick this team? I tell people I'm a Sabres fan by birth. I didn't chose the Sabres, they were chosen for me. Hell if I could pick, I'd be a fan of ANY other NHL and NFL team. Now if you were born in Buffalo, never mind, I understand. If you were born in Buffalo, where you been all this time? If you weren't born in Buffalo, it's not too late to run as far and as fast as you can from these teams. They'll mess you up, guaranteed!

I've always loved watching playoff hockey because I think it's one of the most intense post seasons around (that and march madness), but could never get into the full season because of football which I'm pretty much in love with. But I was watching when we got hosed on Hull's goal, as well as the last few playoff runs. And for some reason I've always hated the Senators. I guess I should instead say I'm a new "hockey" fan instead of Sabres fan since now I'm just following them more closely. I was actually in attendance when the Amerks won the Calder Cup here in Rochester, which I think gives me some credit at least... B-)

Go Sabres! Not bad for an alleged novice. Three points we would disagree on; 1) I think replacing Miller is not as easy as you might think. While he may not yet be elite, and may never be, a look around at some other teams starters(see Philly) and you will realize he is at least top ten. 2) Sekera shows promise as an offensive defensemen, shut down typically refers to a top defensive defensemen 3) When it comes to hockey, Buffalo is only small market when they choose to complain about it. They are middle of the road in revenues and if the Canadian dollar maintains its value they should be able to tap in further into that market.

I haven't been to that place in years.
inkman Posted March 21, 2008 Report Posted March 21, 2008 Welcome to the board. Is the House of Guitars still around? I haven't been to that place in years. Hey Mike Huntsticks, where do you think I live! Not to mention about a hundred other posters from around here. The Hog is still there but Nick Tahoes is a different story. I guess the fake tahoes in Gates has changed ownership and name while the original closes somewhere around the time it gets dark due to the prostitution, violence, and drug deals goind down within the premisies.
shrader Posted March 21, 2008 Report Posted March 21, 2008 Because someone had to... Hey newbie, get out of here!
carpandean Posted March 21, 2008 Report Posted March 21, 2008 2) Sekera shows promise as an offensive defensemen, shut down typically refers to a top defensive defensemen I agree and would offer that Weber has the potential to be a physical defensive (shut down) defensman. However, Sekera did do a great job on OV one-on-one in the last game against the Caps. I noticed it during the first period and the crew talked about it during the intermission. Sekera will likely be more of a puck-moving defenseman, but he seems to have better defensive awareness than Campbell. Too early to tell for sure, but he's showing potential. Radiomike - welcome to a fellow Rochestarian. Wjag - believe it or not, as I kid I did just pick any other NHL/NFL. I was a Blackhawks fan and a Cowboys fan. Then, I grew up (happened during my undergrad days in the mid-1990's). Becoming a Sabres fan was easy, since I was already an Amerks fan. The Bills ... they've taken a bit longer, but I'm coming around. What can I say, I like an underdog.

I'm originally from South Buffalo, I live in Fredericksburg, VA now. I lived in Buffalo until I went in the Marines in March 96'. I used to go to Rochester mainly for shows at the Penny Arcade and also get stuff at H.O.G. The last time I was at H.O.G. was in 01'. I never went to Nick Tahoes, but I heard a lot about their food and always wanted to try it. Sounds like Nick Tahoes is in a pretty bad area of Rochester, that sucks!!!

From what I understood Nick's is being operated by his son Steve and is simply under a different name. Pretty sad I don't know for certain, I haven't been there in over a year or so. Either way there's so many hots places though that copy the garbage plate, it doesn't really matter. The HOG is awesome, me and my dad make a anual trip around Christmas time because of their awesome claymation commercials.
