cdexchange Posted March 21, 2008 Report Posted March 21, 2008 All-time Faves: Neil Young Pink Floyd Led Zeppelin Tragically Hip REM U2 Springsteen Smashing Pumpkins Rush Radiohead DMB Matthew Good The Weakerthans Melissa Etheridge Alice In Chains Pearl Jam Metallica 10000 Maniacs Natalie Merchant The Watchmen Great recent stuff: Death Cab For Cutie The Decemberists Jack Johnson Embrace Thirteen Senses The Editors The Frames Copeland The Shins Coldplay Interpol Luna Foo Fighters Arcade Fire Band Of Horses David Gray Nada Surf Keane Snow Patrol Travis Rilo Kiley I'm an oldie (38) but there is a TON of great newer music out there if you're willing to put forth a small effort to find it. Most of my friends are stuck in classic rock land, which of course I still love too, but I constantly need something new and exciting. Owning a record store definitely has its advantages :) Making lots of money is not one of them however, at least not anymore.
X. Benedict Posted March 21, 2008 Report Posted March 21, 2008 During the Games they often play some kind of Irish sea shanty or something...anybody know what that is? Song/Band?
inkman Posted March 21, 2008 Report Posted March 21, 2008 During the Games they often play some kind of Irish sea shanty or something...anybody know what that is? Song/Band? It's when the other team takes a penalty. It's called "Shipping up to Boston", by the Dropkick Murphys, another great band.
wonderbread Posted March 21, 2008 Report Posted March 21, 2008 It's when the other team takes a penalty. It's called "Shipping off to Boston", by the Dropkick Murphys, another great band. Here Here another one of my Daughters favorites, she enjoys them under the premise of it being "pirate" music as she loves anything pirate. Try some of thier other stuff such as Warriors Code, Roll Call, Cadence to Arms, Kiss me i'm Smitfaced! Great stuff!

Chief Enabler Posted March 21, 2008 Report Posted March 21, 2008 No Justin Timberlake!?! WTF? My top three, including a fruity selection: the Killers Queens of the Stone Age David Gray
chileanseabass Posted March 21, 2008 Report Posted March 21, 2008 i tend to listen to a band non-stop for a few weeks, then switch to someone else, but the only people i keep going back to consistantly are: the national neil young ben folds (with and without the "five")
Claude_Verret Posted March 21, 2008 Report Posted March 21, 2008 One that hasn't been mentioned is Porcupine Tree. If you enjoy Rush, Pink Floyd, NIN etc. then you will love Porcupine Tree. Their earlier work was more Floyd influenced, recent stuff is heavier. I finally caught a live show of theirs when they came to Raleigh a few months ago, out of the hundreds of live shows I have been to it was easily the best.
evil_otto Posted March 21, 2008 Report Posted March 21, 2008 Once upon a time, I listened to mainly nine inch nails Sloan, Foo Fighters, <insert britpop here> and a lot of old school rap. These days, im all over the place. SabreSpace group on last.fm anyone?
FormerFreddie Posted March 21, 2008 Report Posted March 21, 2008 My favorite is a jamband with Buffalo roots: moe. Seen them 63 times live since 1998. Website www.moe.org Live moe. http://www.archive.org/details/moe1998-11-14.flac16 Other favorites along the way: Triumph U2 Bon Jovi Neil Young Nickelback Counting Crows Foo Fighters Grateful Dead Allman Brothers Gov't Mule/Warren Haynes God Street Wine Widespread Panic Bruce Springsteen The Eagles Jackson Browne Indigo Girls Jimmy Buffett Oasis

I'm trying not to rip on anyone's tastes in here, but I just don't get Dropkick Murphys at all. The music is really catchy, but then the "singing" ruins it. All that guy does is scream.

One of the best concerts I've ever been to.

The music is really catchy, but then the "singing" ruins it. All that guy does is scream. I've been a DM fan for a long time. If you ever read any of thier history, they, as youths, tried to blend the two musics that were prominent in thier Boston community at the time: Celtic/Irish music and punk rock. Personally I really like thier old stuff. I'm not sure if any of you have heard much of it but I used to get some 7" singles and low budget recordings at Home of the Hits on Elmwood (not sure if they are still there, tbh), and with napster and limewire some of thier old stuff may be more spread than I thought. The Legend of Finn MacCumhail is a favorite of mine by them. And being from Boston, they are Bruin fans: Just FYI, I believe Boston won in overtime that night.
K-9 Posted March 21, 2008 Report Posted March 21, 2008 God I'm Old No, that's NOT a band name. It's just a cruel reality. Just wait until you young Turks get all nostalgic for these bands that nobody's ever heard about. You'll see what I mean. Best band: Too many to name. Best show: Earth, Wind, and Fire Coolest band member I've met in person: Artemus Pyle, Lynyrd Skynyrd. Just a GREAT dude to have a beer (and other substances) with while loading band equipment back on a semi after a show. It was in another lifetime. GO SABRES!!!

inkman Posted March 21, 2008 Report Posted March 21, 2008 No, that's NOT a band name. It's just a cruel reality. Yes it is. God I'm Old. They aren't for eveyone but I've become quite attached to them.

Before or after the plane crash? I presume before. I'm in your "era". I saw Skynard open for Blue Oyster Cult at Rich Stadium. Quite the show... Most of those memories are locked in non functioning brain cells these days. I'm guessing that was around 1977-1978..

At least this picture you can tell what it is we are looking at. That last one you had posted here was kinda....odd.

Got to build stages for shows in the northeast. Did it for 4 summers. Got to meet some interesting people in various places. Just a great time of life. Met Artemus at that very show. It's a blur to me as well now but I'll go with '77. As you know, he played his ass off for 2 hours. And we can imagine how exhuasting THAT is for a drummer but he had this thing about not wanting people to touch his drums. Well, that's one thing but he actually took the time to LOAD up all the other the equipment as well. Very humble, very nice guy. And there were A LOT of pricks in many of the bands we worked with. But I won't go there. GO SABRES!!!

Goodfella25 Posted March 21, 2008 Report Posted March 21, 2008 Hey nice thread idea...I thought about it before but thought maybe we already had one on this board. Lots of interesting picks in here...but to me, music preference breaks down into 2 categories--anytime music and pregame/workout music. Sometimes there is overlap between the two. Favorite band ever: Led Zeppelin Pregame/workout music: 1. Pantera 2. Shadows Fall 3. AC/DC 4. ZZ Top 5. Metallica
