matter2003 Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 I never have thought of him in that role before, but the more you watch and see how every game he is involved in scoring just about and how his point production has just gotten better and better every season, I think he has to be entered into the discussion... For players that have played over 60 games this year, there are only 21 other players that are averaging a point a game. Roy is also right on the brink with 69 points now in 70 games... I think Pominville has to start being discussed as a player who is right at the cusp of the elite level this year and with another year of experience will probably break thru that barrier next year... What are your thoughts? Can Pominville be considered an elite player yet? If not how close is he?
SabresFan526 Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 He's getting awfully close. I'm a true believer in this kid. I hope Darcy signs Pominville to a 10 year $55 million contract. He's worth it. I don't want to see this guy ever wearing another uniform that is not #29 for the Buffalo Sabres. He is an excellent player. And, I don't care if the rest of the NHL does not consider him elite, he is perfect for the Buffalo Sabres and I do not have a problem with him being the permanent C from here on out.

SabresFan526 Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 10 years is a bit long I'd go 5 for 5. So finally we are willing to give that contract out to someone, huh? Everyone else seems to want it, but Pominville deserves it.
matter2003 Posted March 20, 2008 Author Report Posted March 20, 2008 So finally we are willing to give that contract out to someone, huh? Everyone else seems to want it, but Pominville deserves it. Yeah, forgot that he also leads the team with +/- as well, now at a +21 after tonite
kingcongkorab Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 The fact that he has been showing up at crunch time speaks volumes to me. I think he deserves to be the permanent "C" and we need to lock him up long term.
shrader Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 Elite isn't the right word, but he is one of those guys you have to do everything to keep, especially given his age.
R_Dudley Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 I defintely agree we need to lock this guy up before he even gets a sniff of free agency(RFA). I would got for 5 years and what ever he wants(okay4-5 a year) I still find it hard to believe he passed through waivers a few years back....

I still get a chuckle out of the guy who gave out grades earlier on this board and gave him a C. Maybe he meant captain.

Yeah i'm sure thats it.. I don't get to see allot of games but I do web listen and I even picked up on how much ice time Lindy was giving him as well as special teams PP and PK... That said allot to me....
carpandean Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 I'd say 6 years. I'd start my offer at $4 million per year and would be willing to negotiate that up to $5 million per.
stuhast41 Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 I will eat crow. I thought Pommer was the beneficary of playing with Danny. The kid has come of age. The C looks great on him. He sparked them tonight BIG TIME.
carpandean Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 Yeah i'm sure thats it.. I don't get to see allot of games but I do web listen and I even picked up on how much ice time Lindy was giving him as well as special teams PP and PK... That said allot to me.... Pominville and Roy always have very high TOI, including tons of time on the PK and the PP. We've got Roy, now let's get Pommer, too (and I'm not just saying that because those are the two current-roster players' jerseys that I have.*) * I've liked Jason since he was in Rochester and got my Pommer jersey just after he signed his last contract. So, I've been on his band-wagon for a while.
jimiVbaby Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 I really thought Pommers would fall off this year without the support of Briere, but now my line of thinking is Jason's year is 3/4 him and 1/4 Hecht.
connee Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 What are your thoughts? Can Pominville be considered an elite player yet? If not how close is he?I don't know, but I do know that he's having a helluva better season than that little puke in Philadelphia. Numbers speak for themselves.
bob_sauve28 Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 He's getting awfully close. I'll agree to a point. Boy he got that "C" on his jersey and has went with it. Elite players play that way consistently and Jason is just barely breaking through just now, so he has a ways to go but ya gotta love what ya see now! Let's hope they have turned the corner as a team with the young players emerging Go Sabres!
bob_sauve28 Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 10 years is a bit long I'd go 5 for 5.  This is why I love wonderbread! You make great posts!
LabattBlue Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 I know I brought this up prior to the board crash, but Pominville should rack up some serious votes for the Lady Byng trophy.
wonderbread Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008  This is why I love wonderbread! You make great posts! Thanks, that one was a softball though! Hey Blue thats a great point I never even really thought about it but he would be a perfect candidate!
RayFinkle Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 If there was one player that really stepped up when he got the C on his chest, it is Pommers.
That Aud Smell Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 I'd say 6 years. I'd start my offer at $4 million per year and would be willing to negotiate that up to $5 million per. wait - that's roy's deal, no? if you're going to come and offer 6 years -- which they should, they really should (hell, i'd be okay with 7 or 8) -- then you're entitled to start with a discount on the annual amount. so, the first offer, for me, would be something like 6 years ~$22MM -- maybe you can wind up at 6 years $26MM or 7 years $29.25MM. and, i should add, i love that kid. he's not an "elite" guy (and i don't think he's ever going to be) -- that's really an echelon reserved for just a handful of players -- but he's a franchise-cornerstone guy, to be sure.

What everyone seems to be missing is that Pomminstein is going to be within one year of unrestricted free agency. It is one thing for a 23 year old to sign a long term pact when he is 4 years away. In Roy's case, he gave up only 2 years of his unrestricted free agency. In Pomminstein's case, he has the leverage of being a desirable restricted free agent for one year, than being totally free after that. My guess you are looking at a three year deal unless Buffalo commits to a lot more than $4 million per.
inkman Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 My guess you are looking at a three year deal unless Buffalo commits to a lot more than $4 million per. Probably between 5 and 6 million per. Good for him.
tom webster Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 Probably between 5 and 6 million per. Good for him. It'll be interesting because I had him pegged for between 3.5 to 4 before this month but he is really proving his worth. I coined him Luc Robitaille when he first came into the league because you always heard those things that he couldn't do and he always seemed to have to porve his worth. It would be nice to see him put up those kind of numbers that Luc did.

Not to mention that Roy signed his contract before this season, where he really showed his worth. Pominville will be negotiating after this season (obviously), so there is less uncertainty about his future potential. Roy is looking like a great deal, but it could have turned out to be an overpriced contract -- i.e., it looks like good foresight by Regier. Pominville has now shown that he can produce even without Briere and even without Hecht (during his injury), plus he's now shown that he can be a leader, too. All of these are reasons why I'd start with Roy's deal or, at least, why I think that they will end up above it.
