johnyvegas Posted March 19, 2008 Report Posted March 19, 2008 My wife's favorite Sabres watching joke can now return. Every time she hears RJ say his name.. "Helloooo.. Numminen"
FogBat Posted March 19, 2008 Report Posted March 19, 2008 I'd take Teppo back, but only if it meant that Kalinen sits and the Saberks remain. I'm amazed. We agree on something. Don't ask me to explain this, but I like Teppo. As for Kalinin, he makes way too many mistakes, and he's not a rookie anymore (totally inexcusable if you ask me). The Saberks Dmen are ready to take his spot because this could be their only shot to stay in the Bigs.
wjag Posted March 19, 2008 Report Posted March 19, 2008 Tough call.. He's getting a bit long in the tooth but knows how to play. With so few games left, I say pass. Let's roll with Sekera, Weber and Funk and whoever else wants out of Ra-Cha-Cha... These kids are playing pretty well...

FogBat Posted March 19, 2008 Report Posted March 19, 2008 I looked up Teppo Numminen on tsn.ca. They're not reporting anything about a possible return. Last article posted was on January 9th. Is it me, or does TSN get plenty of respect on this board?
wonderbread Posted March 19, 2008 Report Posted March 19, 2008 Is it me, or does TSN get plenty of respect on this board? Personally if I hear something hockey related TSN is the first place I go unless its Sabres related then I first go to GR.com to confirm.
SwampD Posted March 19, 2008 Report Posted March 19, 2008 I think back to when Connolly came back during last years playoffs, and the Sabres became the uber soft puss team with 4 "scoring" lines. This wasn't their only flaw but the chemistry sucked and only got worse when tim came back. Truer words were never spoken. I was going to say this on your other thread but work got in the way.
apuszczalowski Posted March 19, 2008 Report Posted March 19, 2008 I looked up Teppo Numminen on tsn.ca. They're not reporting anything about a possible return. Last article posted was on January 9th. Is it me, or does TSN get plenty of respect on this board? Why wouldn't they get respect? They are a CANADIAN Sports network, obviously they focus on Hockey. Its like the opposite of ESPN, they fill the first 1/4-1/2 of their show with Hockey highlights and news, and then throw in whatever sport one of the Canadian teams is playing and then usually back to a recap of hockey As for Teppo, they just reported he was in the building with his equipment, and that Ruff said he was there to get examined, but that Ruff doesn't know if he will be ready or in shape to play during the regular season. He was probably at the arena to take a physical to have his suspension lifted so he can get back to training and practicing with the team. With only a couple weeks left to the season, I highly doubt he gets any game time during the regular season
LabattBlue Posted March 19, 2008 Report Posted March 19, 2008 I don't see how Teppo can be in anywhere close to game shape. He hasn't played a game in almost a year and I have to believe the amount of practice time on the ice has also been minimal. If he has been cleared to practice with the team, IMO, he is at least a few weeks away.

As s successful businessman, he doesn't need the $240, 000 or so. However, if Buffalo' s suspension was all business, maybe Teppo's figuring he's entitled to whatever he can get and may be setting things in motion for a future grievance. The interesting question may be, does his contract kick in when he is cleared to play, or when he is in game condition?
Bmwolf21 Posted March 19, 2008 Report Posted March 19, 2008 Link No info on Teppo Nothing new on Teppo Numminen. He wasn't at today's pregame skate and Lindy Ruff had no information to offer. Here's how his exchange with reporters went. Q: Anything new on Teppo? "We're just in the evaluation process." Q: Did he skate or try to skate? "No. Right now, we're still evaluating.' Q: Is it even realistic to think there's enough time left [in the season] for him to consider playing at this point? "I'm going to stick with we're still evaluating him." Q: How does the rule work? Does he have to...? "I'm going to worry about coaching, not how the rules work." ---Mike Harrington
tom webster Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 What a shock. Darcy admits that Teppo filed a grievance a while ago. Don't worry. Players around the leadue love it when franchises play hard ball with respected veterans.

Gonna have to rewind the DVR to see if it caught that interview - for some reason I keep getting commercials overlapping chunks of the intermission report.

R_Dudley Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 Listening to post game tonight and DR talking about Teppo. I guess he has a grievance filed against team through the players association. They said they are not going to pay him till he's ready to play, what a bunch of tightwads only 8 games left. They could go a long way to showing the guy some respect and love by activating him(basically just paying him for 8 games) while he rehabs and gets in shape and that would not break the bank but it probably would cause an issue with whatever his greivance is against team..... Is that public ?
wjag Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 I listened to the interview and came away with the feeling that this is 100% about the money. No surprise. I think he needs to show he is in game shape and force them to activate him regardless of the number of games left.

I could be reading it wrong, but it sounds like the Sabres have another fiasco on their hands and with this grievance pending they more or less had to allow him to come back to practice. IMO...In light of this, I highly doubt you see Teppo this year or ever again in a Sabres uniform.

IMO...In light of this, I highly doubt you see Teppo this year or ever again in a Sabres uniform. A couple of things, Darcy said he filed the grievance " a while ago." My guess is if he didn't file it right from the beginning, he filed in in January when his doctors cleared him to play. I have no doubt that Lindy wants him back. I 'm pretty certain that Darcy wants him back and would bet that Tom and Larry don't want to pay him. Anyone that heard Lindy's terse commment the other day could tell he wasn't comfortable with what was going on. Its like I said at the beginning of the season, they are well within their rights to play hard ball with him, but this kind of stuff costs you more than you save in the end.

Unfortunatley the hits keep on coming as far as respect with players league wide! but this kind of stuff costs you more than you save in the end. Thats all you had to say spinner!!
spndnchz Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 DR vs Teppo press conference. Suspension lifted when he's able to play a game, not necessarily actually play in the game. It's part of Teppo's contract that he signed. This decided between NHL and NHLPA as to what the CBA states. Standard Player contract section 5 (n) In connection with a disability which is not caused by an injury sustained during the course of his employment as a hockey Player including travel with his team or on business requested by his Club, the procedures set forth in this Paragraph 5 shall also apply to the Club doctor's determination regarding the Player's physical fitness to return to play. If the Player is declared to be fit for play, by the Club doctor and Player doctor, or by the independent doctor, he must perform his duties hereunder and shall be entitled to receive the full benefits of this Agreement. If he is declared to be not physically able to play, he shall not be entitled to the benefits of this Agreement until he has been declared to be physically fit to play by the independent medical specialist.

I think the interpretation part comes in to play in January, when his doctor's declared him fit. The Sabres' doctors said he wasn't fit for contact due to the condition of his chest after it was ripped open for surgery. So the question becomes, if he is fit but not necessarily fit to play "well" is he still owed the money? Even now for instance, he could play, maybe not very good, but he could play. Isn't he entitled to his money? If the Sabres' get to live by the letter of the contract, isn't Teppo allowed to live by the letter of the contract?

I don't see how Teppo can be "physically fit to play" as per CBA. I would bet that part of settling this grievance is getting Teppo on the ice and running him through the motions (hope he doesn't have a heart attack). Seriously, I really worry for the guy, he's got to have some worries himself. I also don't see why he can't get paid if he could play but they don't think he could play well. This grievance could bring out private letter ruling like the IRS. Similar to La Fontaine anyone?

You sound like you have some background in law, doesn't "physically fit" seem remarkably vague for contract language?
X. Benedict Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 You sound like you have some background in law, doesn't "physically fit" seem remarkably vague for contract language? Very vague. But I don't think the players have a leg to stand on here. The sentiment seems to be that he should have been payed all along. But 2.6 million is a lot of tickets to buy good will. more than 50,000 $50 tickets. I just had to slip a 5x5 in today.
