Who Was The Best Former Sabre?

Perrault. And if not, then Pat LaFontaine. LaFontaine is arguably the best American born NHL player of all time. And if not for Francois Leroux, there would not be any argument, Pat LaFontaine would be the best American born NHL player of all time. I know Modano has the records, but frankly, I still believe that LaFontaine is the best American born player. I go with with either Perrault or LaFontaine.

Did you mean sabre they let go that blossomed elsewhere or overall ?

Overall, Gilbert, no if's ans or buts....

Blossomed elsewhere several, Mogilny, Andrechuk, Turgeon are just a few that come to mind... But I would pick Mogilny if I had to choose between those three...

Patty only played a single season with the rags before retiring though.

Damn I miss that guy, too bad his heart was a little too big for his body sometimes, he might've played a few more seasons.

Wow-Wee Housley, Dandy Andy, and Mike Foligno.

Seeing Andy and Mike in Leafs jerseys was not fun.

I'd throw Mike Kennan out there. They had a long run of bad coaches after they let him leave Rochester.

Ray Sheppard always comes to mind, but the "one that got away" wasn't a skater. Tom Barrasso picked up a Calder and a Vezina here, but the Sabs let him go to the pit (granted, there were some problems on both sides of the table).

Mogilny didn't "blossom" elsewhere...he had 76 goals for us and never again came close to living up to that season again...

If anything, he rode into the sunset after being waived, sent to the AHL and having noone claim him...

NEVER again came close?? His first year in Vancouver he scored 55 goals and added 52 assists. I'd say those weren't bad numbers considering he didn't have Lafontaine on his line.

The reason he rode off to the minors was A) his contract was too expensive, B) his hip was screwed up, which led to C) nobody picking him up on re-entry waivers because D) he didn't get recalled because of B).

Mogilny was an awesome talent and it's too bad it had to end the way it did for him.

I'll never forget his first few shifts when he turned on the gas and everyone stopped breathing because they were sure they never saw anyone that fast.

For those of you who are too young to remember, picture when afinogenov gets the puck around his own blue line and skates really really really fast and finishes with a goal. I don't need any silly afinogenov sucks posts... Just imagine that for comparison. Now, to get mogilny, multiply max's speed by 2 or 3 and his starting/stopping ability by 2 or 3.

True. I'll also never forget how shocked we all were when a very young Pavel Bure came into The Aud with the Canucks, and starting from the top of the Sabres' left faceoff circle, caught Mogilny from behind on a 2-on-1. He was an absolute blur.

Benoit Hogue

Had 3 consecutive 30 goal seasons after leaving BFLO and wasn't he on the 1999 Stars Cup team that beat BFLO?

And had a pretty successful wrestling career until he went nuts and murdered his wife and kid.

Was on the team but didn't play as he was in injured in conference final

overall throughout their history the sabres have gotten the best out of their players. it's like they

squeeze all the juice out them and they're gone. Not too many guys go from the sabs to somewhere

else and do better. Campbell might be the best.

Seriously, why isn't there more Mogilny youtube stuff? The guy was awesome. That brought a tear to my eye. Ahhhh good times. And BTW, Max is fast, for sure, but he doesn't have anywhere near the skill or hands as well as passing ability that Almo had.

Doug Bodger was a pretty solid defenseman for a long time and he came back in that deal. I think it's fair to say that Barasso didn't win them those cups, he just didn't lose it for them. Lemieux, Jagr, Coffey, Francis, Recchi, Tocchet, Zubov, Stevens, yeah they were ok. :-)

One minor correction, Zubov only played in Pittsburgh for one season and it was well after their cup years. He wasn't even in the states yet at that point. Go back and swap out his name for Joe Mullen and I'll pretend it never happened.;)
