Miller, Pommer, Both?

This may have been covered during my absence, but is anyone else looking ahead to see how much money is going to be available for these two guys? Obviously both are going to get a hefty raise, but do you think that we are going to be able to afford both and still get under the cap?

I think its safe to say that we've got to find a way to keep them...but...do we have the money?

Funny. I just posted a similar thought.

I think the Sabres had Miller's and Pominville's contracts in their plans all along. I hope they both get their long term deals this summer.

Yes we do. Pominville is a RFA, and he'll be signed using connolly/max/kotalik money. Miller is going to get paid no matter what. It'll happen. Remember, the sabres are sitting on a 3.5$ million void that was teppo numminen. There is plenty of money to be thrown around. I'm expecting Pominville to get an identical contract as Roy and i'm expecting miller to get lundqvist's numbers (you know, the 6.5 million that campbell allegedly wanted?)

I just replied with the same exact thing to your post and then saw your reply. I'm calling a relative in WNY to buy me a Lotto today. This is strange.

I totally forgot about Teppo's money. Thats a great point.

Welcome Back!!

These two will be signed. Along with Paille, Bernie, and Goose, getting new contracts. Kalenin, Kotalik, and possible Max will be gone. I think Lindy has had enough. Especially with Kalinen.

Btw, you should post more, (33 posts), I think your insights would be very valuable to this board. ;) ;)

Paille has been playing solid too this year. His intensity has been great. You can tell he's progressed.

I think it was the third period last night, he drove in the leafs zone on the side, and you could just tell he had a purpose and was on a mission.

Thanks again Hawk.

Yeah, I think Miller and Pominville will get signed. So, here's the situation. Miller is a UFA after next year, meaning the earliest they can negotiate with him is July 1st. Pominville is an RFA after next season as is Stafford (whom I'm not sure is worth keeping yet), so I believe, I could be wrong on this, is January 1st, 2009. Spacek is also a UFA after next year, and I would like to keep him, but for a lesser pricetag than he has now as he will be older and so far has not lived up to the contract besides just this year. So, here's how those guys get signed. First, Teppo and Kalinin open up $4.6 million when they're contracts are not renewed. Then, you have Connolly, Kotalik, and Max combine for $8.566 million whose contracts expire after 2008-2009 season. That's a total of $13.166 million available to sign Pominville, Miller, Gaustad, Paille, Bernier, and maybe a second line centerman and a defenseman or two. That also excludes the increase in the salary cap. So, you are looking at about $15-$20 million available to sign all of these guys. If I were to make a guess here's what I think these guys sign for:

1. Miller - $6-$6.5 million/year

2. Pominville - $4 - $5 million/year

3. New 2nd Line Center - $3 - $3.5 million/year

4. Offensive Defenseman - $3 - $3.5 million/year

5. UFA Defensive Defenseman - $2 - $2.5 million/year

6. Bernier - $850K - $1.5 million/year

7. Goose - $850K - $1.2 million/year

8. Paille - $950K - $1.5 million/year

For these 8 guys, I'm looking at a minimum of $20.65 million to a maximum of $25.2 million in new money. I cannot justify keeping Max, Kotalik, Connolly, and Spacek at more than what they make right now. So, I'd think the old money would go down with the new money going up with a net increase in payroll of about $7-$10 million. So, assuming the cap goes up and if the revenue model for the Sabres goes up, I could see the Sabres signing all of these guys and having enough money. But that's my opinion.

What precedent has Darcy set where you think any of these players outside of Kalinin (we all know they let all their UFA's walk ) would make you think that all these players won't be back. He traded Pyatt supposedly to free up cap space , who I'd rather have than all the above players, but I just don't see Darcy getting pro-active all of a sudden. If all the new contracts dictate that Darcy move a player or two, then maybe just maybe a deal gets done but if he can fit our merry bunch under the cap nobody will get moved. :(

I think Darcy identifies his key players and signs those of highest priortity in terms of who will fit in long term according to the very restrictive budget set by TG/LQ. At the time, I was really pleased to see them sign both Roy and Hecht. I love both of these guys as my top 2 favorite forwards on the team. I wish something could have been accomplished with Campbell but...I know they have to throw the bank at Miller and Pommer will cost about 3.5-4 mill a year. I posted previously that we have 15 current players on the roster who are RFAs or UFAs in the next two years. I hope they get Stafford in long term as well, even though hasn't really had an impact year. The big question is next year's UFAs - Max, Connolly, Kotalik and Spacek. The have to sign Spacek with all our young D, we need a leader on the blue line. What will Tom's budget be moving forward? When Edmonton screwed with his financial plan, I think it messed up getting a guy like Campbell signed.

I'd give Pominville a Roy contract in a heartbeat. Hopefully, Miller having a slightly off year will let them lock him up for less than Lundqvist, but those things are to speculate at (too many unknowns). I'd like to start next season with those two locked up.

I hope that they are smart enough to let Kalinin walk. Since Lindy had to skate in his face calling out for having no heart and, even then, he didn't play much better, I hope the decision was made easy for them. There are several other guys that I might let go (Max, Timmy, Lydman, ...), but due to their remaining contracts, that may not happen. If they can be traded, great, but more that likely, the will be here next year. I'm thinking Max will have the most inflated trade value due to his offensive potential. Somebody will think that they can fix him.

I'd rather they'd re-signed Briere than Miller. Miller is consistently over-rated around here and elsewhere. He's a *good* goalie, but not a great one.

Briere could probably use a few fans right now.

You gotta think that the Sabres will sign Miller and Pominville and the restricted free agents..I dont think the Sabres want to pay anyone who will earn Star money who isnt considered a star...As good as I believe Drury was for the Sabres he is no Ovechkin or Crosby which is why when the contract was so high they vanished....MIller can play so well then he plays shaky..I am not sure if it is because he is overworked or thats the way he is...I would go get a 2nd team goalie that can play and see how he reacts next year before I invest 6- 8 mill on him..I dont want to see a Vanek situation again..

Summary of discussion in Pens-Flyer game: "Briere was a -2 in the first half. Why is he on the ice against the Malkin line? Look here (*shows most recent Pens' almost goal*), he's not even paying attention to the defensive side."
