Taro T Posted March 26, 2007 Report Posted March 26, 2007 Just play the trap! One forechecker and everyone back. We really have had problems with that sh-- And IF the Sabres play a trapping team in the 1st round before the refs that "let the players decide the game" are punted, the Sabres could have issues. So if the Sabres have to play Minnesota, Colorado, Dallas, Florida, or NJ in the 1st round they are in trouble. (I'm sure I missed a few.) The only realistic 1st round opponent from that group is Joisey, and in order for that to happen both Buffalo and Joisey need to be passed in the standings (I don't see a 2v7 or 3v6 matchup happening in any circumstance; 4v5 is an outside (20% or less) possibility.) If the Sabres face one in the later rounds when guys who call penalties are the ones remaining, I'm not worried (much ;) ).
John in VA Posted March 26, 2007 Report Posted March 26, 2007 The Sabres have seven games left, the first four against hard opponents, and the last three against Dead Teams Skating. They ought to be able to squeeze out a few points from the hard games and be able to control their destiny during the final three. The key is winning the division. The division champ plays the 8 seed, and whoever that is, it's a mediocre team exhausted from scrambling just to get in. The second place team in the division plays the 5 seed, which is going to be the Devils or the Penguins. Hmmm, Devils/Penguins or Habs/Canes/?? It's worth it, guys, just play it well enough to win the division and avoid more injuries. Do NOT get into a tough fight with the Devils or Pens right off the bat.

And EDM was a number 8 team last year... Exhausted from scrambling to get in... ?? They were one game and an injured starting goalie from winning the Cup... :nana: :nana:
John in VA Posted March 26, 2007 Report Posted March 26, 2007 The thing is, you have to play someone, they don't give byes. Anything can happen in a tournament, someday even a 16 seed will beat a 1 seed in the NCAAs, but you do what you need to to improve your odds. Anyone can find examples of upsets, but what Edmonton or any other team did last year is irrelevant.
Bmwolf21 Posted March 26, 2007 Report Posted March 26, 2007 I agree that they need to go after the top seed in the conference (and the league for that matter) so they have home-ice for as long as possible. The problem with the 1-8 seeding is that you don't know which 8 seed you are going to get - the 8 seed that is red-hot on account of playing playoff-type hockey for a couple months just to get in; or the exhausted, ready-for-the-golf-course-cuz-we-got-nothing-left 8 seed. Also, do we get a team that we have struggled with this year, like Toronto or Montreal, or someone we have played well against, like Carolina?
