jackb Posted March 23, 2007 Report Posted March 23, 2007 Van Miller never went this far. RJ is one of a kind we all know that but where does it end in terms of him his image? T-Shirts with his slogans on them?....WTF? "Scary good" is subpar RJ anyway. He is a legend.....some may say an artist. But he puts out too much for the $$$.....like a........................................... Nice radio spots. God Bless him though
Peace Frog Posted March 23, 2007 Report Posted March 23, 2007 I have no problem with it. He's been doing play by play for 30+ years, is getting close to retirement, and is banking a few bucks for his effort. It isn't like Rocky Balboa did in Rocky 2 where after one famous fight started doing TV commercials. RJ has been doing this for a long time. Now, about those Perry's ice cream commercials... :bag:
inkman Posted March 23, 2007 Report Posted March 23, 2007 RJ is one of a kind we all know that but where does it end in terms of him his image? Some of the commercials are over the top but I can't blame a guy for making a living. T-Shirts with his slogans on them?....WTF?"Scary good" is subpar RJ anyway. Are those shirts his idea, are they Sabres officially lisenced gear or is it someone else trying to benefit from his likeness? He is a legend.....some may say an artist. But he puts out too much for the $$$.....like a........................................... Nice radio spots. I'm not sure who is to "blame" if that is really what to call it. The commercials could certainly be less cheesy. Could RJ have only agreed to do a commercial if it met his integrity? Sure, but Perry's could have done a better job and the onus is on them as well.
fallen627 Posted March 23, 2007 Report Posted March 23, 2007 Van Miller never went this far. RJ is one of a kind we all know that but where does it end in terms of him his image? But he puts out too much for the $$$.....like a........................................... Nice radio spots. God Bless him though come on man, really? Let the many make some money if he wants. I wonder if you would be able to turn offers down. This analogy is shaky as well. True, he is out his image, but in this sense, is everyone not a in some way shape or form? Do you not your labor and time out in return for money when you work? This is basically what he is doing. Unless he starts doing something that is incredibly demeaning, like dancing around in a giant lobster suite while singing songs from The King and I, then I wouldn't make a huge deal about it.
bcsaberks Posted March 23, 2007 Report Posted March 23, 2007 RJ's salary should be no less than the average player's on the current roster, if you give consideration to his value to the organeyezation. Who generates more fans for the team, etc. RJ? Or Kotalik? Those Perry commercials are brutal though. I blame the ad agency.
jerryg Posted March 23, 2007 Report Posted March 23, 2007 Van Miller??? Not even in the same league as RJ. Don't know how he kept his job as long as he did. "The Bills come to the line. The snap. Kelly with the throw...it's caught and down at the 20" Then the color guy would have to come in and tell you who caught the pass and who made the tackle. So overrated.
blugold43 Posted March 23, 2007 Report Posted March 23, 2007 well, the last couple years were a little tough, but you're forgetting the first 35 when you bust on Van. football's a totally different game anyway. bad analogy.
bottlecap Posted March 23, 2007 Report Posted March 23, 2007 RJ and '' shouldn't be used in the same sentence, especially in the headline. It's disrespectful.

Everyone else is making money off him, so why can't he make a few bucks? Although those Perrys commercials are very annoying!!
That Aud Smell Posted March 23, 2007 Report Posted March 23, 2007 Some of the commercials are over the top but I can't blame a guy for making a living. Yep. Are those shirts his idea, are they Sabres officially lisenced gear or is it someone else trying to benefit from his likeness? I tend to think he was approached and cajoled. And I will add this: Who're and what're we talking about here?! We're talking about a beloved hockey play-by-play guy shilling some shirts and hats -- we're not talking about an "artist" like, say, Springsteen selling the rights to a great song to Ford Motors. Get a grip. Anyway, RJ's slide from a real-time hockey artist into corporate promoter and ringleader started when he made the move to TV. Still, I got nothing but love for him.
Stoner Posted March 23, 2007 Report Posted March 23, 2007 Was he his legacy when the Sabres released those "tapes" that made thousands of dollars for charity? The embodiment of Sabres hockey does not deserve the word "" associated with him. And I thought "scary good" was, uh, scary good. I don't think he had that one at the ready.
LabattBlue Posted March 23, 2007 Report Posted March 23, 2007 Just my 2 cents... I love RJ's enthusiasm, but "Now do you believe" and "This team is good, scary good" were pretty lame.
evil_otto Posted March 23, 2007 Report Posted March 23, 2007 Yep. From this article it looks like it is official Sabres merchandise, but they are just using Rick Jeanneret's likeness as he invented the slogans that are going on everything. It's a shame that he looks like a shill (and a cardboard cutout) for this in the article pic, but I'll bet any royalties that RJ is going to receive from this merchandise is minimal at best. I hardly think RJ's a for a doing a couple of questionable commercials and releasing some merchandise, for which past profits have gone to charity. Seriously, if anyone wants to complain about corporate whores go after NASCAR, NFL, George Lucas, etc.
Stoner Posted March 23, 2007 Report Posted March 23, 2007 Just my 2 cents... I love RJ's enthusiasm, but "Now do you believe" and "This team is good, scary good" were pretty lame. Kind of agree on "believe." He and others have said it many times. But "These guys are good, scary good" was original, a takeoff on the PGA Tour slogan. But, yeah, at some point after May Day (and probably going back to LALALA), Rick started scripting things more. His best calls are spontaneous. His call of Stafford's goal the other night (from Roy and Vanek, starting in the Sabres zone) was a thing of beauty.

I'm glad someone else isn't blowing smoke up Van's ass. He had his moments, but for the most part I found him almost unlistenable. He made boatloads of mistakes during his broadcasts as well. For what it's worth, I think RJ has started to become a caricature of himself. He began getting some national notoriety for his calls, and now seems to go overboard -- even for him. Let's face it -- he's a goofy guy. It is completely appropriate for him to be doing goofy commercials.

shrader Posted March 23, 2007 Report Posted March 23, 2007 Was he his legacy when the Sabres released those "tapes" that made thousands of dollars for charity? Does anyone know if the money from these shirts/hats goes to charity too?
wonderbread Posted March 23, 2007 Report Posted March 23, 2007 i Love RJ. Come seriously folks everyones gotta eat though. The entertainment value he provides all Sabres fans with is hard to measure why shouldn't he be able to grab a few bucks in the process? As with Van Miller i think just the idea of him is what was great The old stoic announcer image maybe, still even if you didn't like him how could you not like when he said "its fandamonium!!!!"

wjag Posted March 23, 2007 Report Posted March 23, 2007 I can't stand to hear those commercials.. They bother me so much so that if I'm listening on the net, I'll switch to the other team. Everytime I hear them I cringe. Thank God I have Center Ice and am not exposed to them anymore. Those commercials are the very reason I stopped listening to the pre and post game radio shows. I don't begrudge the man from making every buck he can. But I will not listen to them. WGR55 has all but lost me as a listener until they stop. I mean come on. It's feakin freezin outside and they are hawking ice cream. Great marketing guys...

SCSabresFan! Posted March 24, 2007 Report Posted March 24, 2007 I love RJ and he can hawk used chewing gum for all I care. The man can call a hockey game with such ease you don't need to be watching the game to know what is going on.

We're in the middle of perhaps the greatest season in franchise history, and people are actually worried about whether RJ is himself by hawking some hats and t-shirts? There's not a person on this board who wouldn't take the opportunity to make a few bucks if one was provided. C'Mon, everyone. Get a grip. RJ is not selling pardons for the White House. It's hockey. If you want to worry about "," let's look into Halliburton. When RJ's merchandise results in lost American (and Canadian, with apologies to our friends up North) lives, then I'll worry about it. We might win the Stanley Cup. Just enjoy the ride.
