GrimFandango Posted March 18, 2007 Report Posted March 18, 2007 This is the penalty summary from tonights game - rangers/bruins... i think its a night to night thing... not so much the refs totally putting away their whistles. lately we have been playing teams that are less penalized than others. Yes, i think they aren't calling it as tight, but the mere quantity of calls tells you litte. PENALTY SUMMARY 1st Period 02:59 WIDEMAN, D. : Cross checking - 2 min 04:00 ISBISTER, B. : Holding - 2 min 08:57 HOLLWEG, R. : Elbowing - 2 min 11:40 TENKRAT, P. : Roughing - 2 min 11:40 ISBISTER, B. : Roughing - 2 min 19:59 JAGR, J. : Interference - 2 min 2nd Period 04:36 WIDEMAN, D. : Hooking - 2 min 05:39 REICH, J. : Fighting (maj) - 5 min 05:39 LIFFITON, D. : Fighting (maj) - 5 min 08:50 WIDEMAN, D. : Interference - 2 min 10:30 ALBERTS, A. : Slashing - 2 min 3rd Period 01:24 KOBASEW, C. : Fighting (maj) - 5 min 01:24 AVERY, S. : Roughing - 2 min 01:24 CALLAHAN, R. : Fighting (maj) - 5 min 01:24 AVERY, S. : Cross checking - 2 min 04:56 HOGGAN, J. : Hi-sticking - 2 min 07:42 AVERY, S. : Unsportsmanlike conduct - 2 min 09:38 REICH, J. : Holding - 2 min 11:46 HOLLWEG, R. : Fighting (maj) - 5 min 11:46 REICH, J. : Fighting (maj) - 5 min 14:34 CHISTOV, S. : Roughing - 2 min 19:10 KOBASEW, C. : Misconduct (10 min) - 0 min
Eleven Posted March 18, 2007 Report Posted March 18, 2007 I've got to agree that something is up with the officiating, but I don't know what it is. I watched a good part of Detroit-Vancouver last night, and saw a tightly called game with penalties (the one that really comes to mind was a first-period slashing call) that would have been ignored in any Sabres game I've seen in 2007. Possibly, the Western conference plays a different style and so the games are called differently?

I would like to say that the players seem to have stopped the clutching and grabbing and hooking, and that is a reason for decline in pnalties

Stoner Posted March 18, 2007 Report Posted March 18, 2007 I just looked this up this morning. Power plays in Sabres games First 10 games: 121 Second... 100 Third... 108 Fourth... 92 Fifth... 96 Sixth... 92 Seventh... 81 FWIW.
wjag Posted March 18, 2007 Report Posted March 18, 2007 I just looked this up this morning. Power plays in Sabres games First 10 games: 121 Second... 100 Third... 108 Fourth... 92 Fifth... 96 Sixth... 92 Seventh... 81 FWIW. Looks like a trend to me. Why? Better discipline, less enforcement, tastes great, less filling.. I think they refs are swallowing their whistles. I suspect some better discipline is at work as well, but we are approaching the playoffs and you know....
Stoner Posted March 18, 2007 Report Posted March 18, 2007 Did it happen last year? The data is easily available for those who are so inclined. I don't have time. I have to go get ready for the game. So many candles to light, and getting into that NASA-approved adult diaper takes over 10 minutes itself.

Raelity Posted March 18, 2007 Report Posted March 18, 2007 On the one hand, less power plays might seem good (since we can't seem to score on them ;) ) But seriously, is a team geared towards speed in trouble if the ref's start calling (not calling) penalties - like the old time hockey days? A lot of our guys are built for speed (not for withstanding a lot of physical abuse). Would teams in the playoffs try to beat us up/knock players out if the refs are holding back on calls? I think I know how you'll answer. In a nutshell are we doomed in that case?
