Kent, Ohio or Geneseo, NY

My wife was just offered jobs in Kent, Ohio and in Geneseo, NY. We live in Buffalo now.

Would anyone be able to offer any insight into either area?

Can you get the Sabres in Ohio? Do they know what beef on wick and salt potatoes are? Why have you even asked this question?

Living in the south, I find this "Buffalo" bar in Atlanta. Grab a menu and jump up and down with glee after noticing "real" Beef on Weck on the menu. Only to find out their shipment of buns didn't make it in that day and they were out. :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash:

I lived in Geneseo for 4 years. I can tell you pretty much anything you want to know.

Ask away.

Did you find things to do in the Geneseo area itself, or did you spend a lot of time in Rochester on weekends, etc.?

There is a lot of stuff to do with the college, and people who live and work at the college always attend stuff. Every month the college usually has an art show, classical music, vocal performances, plays etc. Each semester the school brings a national calibre musician for a concert. Mama Mia's pizza is amazing and the wings are the best I've had outside of Buffalo. The school hockey team is pretty good too, and the atmosphere at games is really fun. Rochester is 40 minutes away, and Henrietta is 25-30 minutes. There's tons of stuff to do in Rochester, and really good restaurants. We used to go to Rochester for the Roch. Philharmonic, the Geva Theatre, Dinosaur BBQ, good thai food, the Strong Museum, and Amerks games. Henrietta has just about every chain restaurant in the world and a couple of malls. The nice thing about Geneseo is that you have all of those things at your disposal, but you get to live in a small town with a lot of character and young people. If you're into outdoor activities Letchworth State Park is about 5 minutes away and there you can hike, kayak, picnic, camp, etc. It's gorgeous in the fall. I don't regret my time living there.

Plus, I used to go back to Buffalo all the time. One year, I had 1/2 season tickets to the Sabres, and I never missed a game.

I am originally from our great ski country in WNY, but I now live in Ohio - Columbus, but Ohio all the same. I don't know a whole lot about Kent other than it being a college town and the riots from the 70s, of course. Taxes in Ohio are a lot less than in NY. Gas alone is ALWAYS at least a 1/3 less than it is in NY. In addition, though Ohio has lost several manufacturing jobs throughout the last 8 - 10 years, there has been a lot more business development than there has been in WNY.

If you are in the Northeast part of Ohio, there is a chance that you can still get the Sabres on regular TV. If not, I believe you can still get MSG on Direct TV.

The downfalls of Ohio vs. WNY is the extra taxes in Ohio on alcohol. Though they have better laws on Sunday drinking, the taxes on alcohol is so much that when my wife and I are back in WNY we will make a special trip to Premier for Wine and Spirits. The other downfall is that the people don't understand WNYers. The people in Ohio claim that THEIR teams have been more depressing and they have been more emotionally scarred than we have in Buffalo. Yes, they must be on drugs. Once you get used to living in Ohio, you don't notice the mindset and the midwest personality, but when you go back home or when 3,000 Sabres fans take over Columbus you notice it and miss it.

You also might want to live a little closer to Roch (or in Roch) and let her commute to Geneseo It's just a straight shot down 390.

That might not be an option if she was offered a job as a director of a residence hall. But otherwise, living in Henrietta would put you closer to the more vigorous action. Livonia also has one of the highest ranking public schools in the state. Public schools in general around the Geneseo are very good mostly because all of the teachers came from Geneseo.

I went to school in Geneseo, and the community is so great there. I still have a lot of friends living there, and can only say good things about the place. I actually considered moving there. Sometimes the college can get a little overwelming but after being there for a summer the true beauty of the people and location stood out.

I could also make it to Bills and Sabres games pretty fast.

Yeah but remember DirectTV will BLOCK OUT games on MSG, even if you've got it. They'll not let you watch them unless you've got CI (and then it's on the CI station).

After living down south for 10 years, I'd choose to eat the taxes and stay in NYS if I had it to do all over again, personally. That chick from that tornado movie said it best.. no place like home and all that.

Geneseo is a great little town and the school is top notch - it was once named the "Number ONE Party School in America" by Playboy magazine, but that was when the drinking age was 18.

There's tons of land around there if you want to have a hideaway type place or you can live in town where there are plenty of pretty cool old Victorian style homes which are cheap by the "Rest of the US" standard.

The town has Wegman's and Walmart, plus all the other fast food places (including Tim Horton's). It's minutes away from Conesus Lake and Letchworth.

Probably one of the best kept secrets in America. Mostly because jobs are limited and NYS/City/Local government.

I've been out since '02, but when I've been back, they are still around. Last time I saw Carl, he wasn't going by "Fat Carl" anymore. He had dropped tons of weight.

A couple years ago he had the gastric bypass surgery and dropped a ton of weight. However, I still wouldn't call him slim. I agree with the above poster, geneseo is a hiden gem that anyone is lucky to be able to call home.

i "lived" in Geneseo for 5 years, but somehow my memories are hazy...

hmmmmm.

interestingly enough, i've "visited" Kent, but can't quite remember what that was like either!

Wow, there are a lot of Geneseo-eans on this board.

I can't believe Fat Carl isn't fat anymore. I'd go back to the IB to see it for myself, but I'd probably be suspected for pedophilia, I think the average age in that bar is 17.25!

......... and then there's Kelley's. Don't sit down or you might catch something!

I used to watch most sabres games at club 41 on main street. Perfect place to grab a buffalo chicken sandwich, a couple beers, and a hokey game.
