Taro T Posted March 5, 2007 Report Posted March 5, 2007 Seriously? That is the base salary. He will make a lot more than that with a strong playoff run. If they falter early, he doesn't make another dime.
shrader Posted March 5, 2007 Report Posted March 5, 2007 It has only been in place since the new CBA so it is not that tested yet. Last year Bob Clarke did just this as Philly GM. I cannot remember, but I think it was Nashville that was forced to meet a higher than expected contract. It was Ryan Kesler in Vancouver.
X. Benedict Posted March 5, 2007 Report Posted March 5, 2007 Interesting about the RFA's, a team could really drive a team like Pittsburgh mad by making offers to these guys at once: 20 Armstrong, Colby (RW) 23 0.817 RFA 7 Ouellet, Michel (RW) 24 0.500 RFA 16 Christensen, Erik ? 22 0.488 RFA 19 Whitney, Ryan 23 0.901 RFA
nfreeman Posted March 5, 2007 Report Posted March 5, 2007 In regards to #2, I agree with you about Numminem being a solid player this year. But what if they could accomplish all your other points about not shedding those guys AND keep Briere and Drury by replacing Numminem with Paetsch? With Paestch progressing at his current pace, I find it hard for the Sabres to justify keeping both Numminem and Spacek at their current salary on the roster. One of those guys are going to be replaced next season. Teppo and Spacek are both still significantly better than Paetsch. I like Paetsch and I fully expect him to be in the top 6 after next year, when either or both of Teppo and Soupy are likely to be gone. For next year's title defense (yeah baby), I'd much rather have 7 NHL-quality defensemen. As for accomplishing all of the other points, I just don't think it's the right decision to spend $14 million per year (and that is about what it will cost) on Briere and Drury. That's 30% of the cap for 2 guys. I think it's a better move to keep our waves of talented players and also maintain, as daveb suggests, about $2 million in cap space for a rainy day. While I like the young guys, I think Stafford will be with the sabres next year in any event. I also think Connolly, Kotalik and Max are significantly better than Ryan, Paille and MacArthur.

Well I guess I disagree in terms of Paestch. He's the best point man on the power play right now, and it's going to be hard to keep him off the roster come playoffs, if the defense is completely healthy (a big "if"). And considering that Paestch is ready to contribute today, keeping him on the bench next season would be a difficult thing to do. I look it the same way as the Dumont/Pomminstein situation from last offseason. Last year Dumont played wing with Briere (on the "2nd" line I guess). His salary arbitration award didn't fit in the cap, so the team replaced him with Pomminstein on the "2nd" line, and Pommer has responded with a strong season for a fraction of the cost of Dumont. I agree that if Drury and Briere are offered $7 million a year, the Sabres would be out of the bidding for them. However, I'm not so sure that they will be offered that much. If the Sabres can sign each for between $5.5 and $6 million, I believe they should do it, and look to replace more expensive players (Numinem and Kotalik) with cheaper ones, who are ready to step in and contribute.

Ah, there's the rub, eh? I too would support keeping them both at $5.5 - $6 million each -- and I think the Sabres will do so if it's possible. I wouldn't unload Teppo or Spacek to make it happen, but I probably would unload Kotalik (although I like Kotalik). In any case though I don't think it will be possible because I think the numbers will be too high. As far as keeping Paetsch on the bench, I think we can assume that either a winger or a defenseman will get hurt at some point during the playoffs, opening up a spot for him. I think he would get the call at wing before any of the kids other than Stafford. For that matter it's quite likely Max won't be back until the middle of the 1st round or later.
drnkirishone Posted March 5, 2007 Report Posted March 5, 2007 Teppo is not worth 2.6 million a year I'd like to see him come back, but not if it is for close to that number

You and dave really got this stuff down. Looks like lots of other teams have worries, too, so they probably won't be looking at our RFA. At least I hope
