BetweenThePipes00 Posted March 3, 2007 Report Posted March 3, 2007 Do you think style of play explains Brodeur's 12 shutouts and Miller's two (I think)? The shots on goal each team allows are pretty close. At least it's not like comparing Detroit and Buffalo. The Wings keep their shots down to a ridiculous number. I don't know... I think Brodeur's better. That's no knock on Miller. Martin is one of the greats of this era, better even than Hasek, IMHO. Well of course I agree that Brodeur is better ... 10 years from now Miller will a hell of a lot better than he is now too. And is Cam Ward better than Brodeur? Khabibulin? I don't think so, but they have Cups. All I know is the Sabres do not lose games because of the guy. When he came in after Marty got tossed in that first Ottawa game, he made 5 or six clutch saves cold off the bench to keep the Sabres in that game, and then he made another stop few goalies make on Heatly during the power play in OT. The way he played in that game when he thought he had the night off told me everything I need to know. The only reason we're having this discussion is because a bunch of kids no one had heard of 6 months ago are averaging 6 goals a game and we need something to talk about.
BRH Posted March 3, 2007 Report Posted March 3, 2007 If you want to see how Brodeur would fare on our team, the second period of this year's All-Star Game should give you some idea. Brodeur is good. With the trap he is great. I'm sick and tired of our goalies getting compared to him when we play a completely different style. And you can't compare total shots on goal and then claim the teams play a similar style. It's the QUALITY of the shots that matters. I will bet that teams have many more scoring chances against us than against the Devils.
diver Posted March 3, 2007 Report Posted March 3, 2007 Ryan makes some big time saves. I am not comfortable with our defense. Yes they do leave Ryan alone. As soon as I want to say something bad or lose faith he comes up and makes some kodak moment saves.
SabresFan526 Posted March 4, 2007 Report Posted March 4, 2007 I hope tonight was able to answer some questions for the folks who think Ryan is overrated. Did you watch tonight? He stood on his head and gave up a goal late. I think it's fair to say Ryan won the game tonight. He was awesome tonight. So, there you have it. Ryan's really not overrated and is actually pretty good. That's my take.

I wanted to write following yesterday's Montreal game, but I thought all the posts collectively, made good points. - Miller makes huge saves early on. - Miller gives up a softie late, usually once the game well within hand. - The style of play leaves Miller on an island so you cannot compare him to other goalies. I think all of those points were demonstrated in tonight's Toronto game. He's a great goalie! The only point I did not mention above (because we did not see it against Toronto) was Miller in shoot-outs. What goalie would you rather have in net in a shoot-out? Miller all the way!
Claude Balls Posted March 4, 2007 Report Posted March 4, 2007 Ryan Miller = best team in the NHL. Nuff said!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sweet Baboo Posted March 4, 2007 Report Posted March 4, 2007 is there something in Miller's contract that discourages shutouts?
Claude Balls Posted March 4, 2007 Report Posted March 4, 2007 is there something in Miller's contract that discourages shutouts? Will you be asking this same question if he is skating the Cup around HSBC? I doubt it. Who gives 2 sh--s about shoutouts right now.
Sweet Baboo Posted March 4, 2007 Report Posted March 4, 2007 Will you be asking this same question if he is skating the Cup around HSBC? I doubt it. you're damn right I won't be asking Who gives 2 sh--s about shoutouts right now. a win is a win, but one wonders what sort of mental lapse he has at the end of games (this is not an isolated incident) to let those in
drnkirishone Posted March 4, 2007 Report Posted March 4, 2007 I'm happy as hell that he doesn't get more shutouts.................... and sad happy cause that means less money come contract time so we can spend more elsewhere sad cause I got him in both my fantasy leagues and he is killing me in the one cause of his lack of shutouts lol

Martin is one of the greats of this era, better even than Hasek, IMHO. To answer your 1st question, yes, it explains most of it. (Not all of it, experience also plays a factor. And at this particular moment in time, Brodeur is better than Ryan, but not by much.) As for your other point. When they went head to head, Dom is the one that made 70 saves and got the W. Dom beat St. Patrick head to head. Martin can't make that same claim. Brodeur has always been on a team with a defense 1st philosophy. Dom won games by himself when #42 was part of the Sabres top defensive pairing.
drnkirishone Posted March 4, 2007 Report Posted March 4, 2007 how about thous nite when dom was here when we would go like 5 straight mins of the puck in are end with out even getting a clear or iceing. I think Broduer's career would have been much different if he was anywere other then Jersey. But I gotta give him credit too............ He was and is the right goalie for Jersey. Not sure Dom would have been real good there back in his hayday he was prone to mistakes when he wasn't getting alot of action.
BuffalOhio Posted March 4, 2007 Report Posted March 4, 2007 I like Ryan Miller, and I have seen him play very, very well. He took Marty's job because of his consistency, in my opinion. But, is he over-rated? His stats aren't particularly good. He seems almost incapable of getting a shutout. We have all seen him steal a period or two, but has he ever really stolen a whole game? If he was behind a low-scoring team (Devils, etc.), how would he fare? Ottawa Senators, game 2 of the 2nd round of the playoffs last year. He stole that entire game.
wjag Posted March 4, 2007 Report Posted March 4, 2007 Back-to-back 30+ win seasons.. Stopped something like 32-39 shoot out attempts... Stoned Toronto twice in one week... Plays comfortably in the Buffalo system. Teammates like him and trust him..
DR HOLLIDAY Posted March 4, 2007 Report Posted March 4, 2007 Back-to-back 30+ win seasons.. First Sabre goalie to do so...............Miller is a winner................
BetweenThePipes00 Posted March 4, 2007 Report Posted March 4, 2007 one wonders what sort of mental lapse he has at the end of games (this is not an isolated incident) to let those in How was the Antropov goal a lapse of any kind? Miller played that perfectly, he got no help from his defense and Antropov picked a very small spot right under the bar. Sometimes it's just a great shot. Thank God Miller can let these things go faster than some fans, he would need therapy.

bob_sauve28 Posted March 4, 2007 Report Posted March 4, 2007 Maybe our defensemen are the ones who are overrated? I can recall so many goals this season where the D-men were completely to blame. Spacek and Kalinin are total trash. Campbell is good, but not starting All-Star good. Tallinder needs to take some calcium and Vitamin C supplements. No
DR HOLLIDAY Posted March 4, 2007 Report Posted March 4, 2007 No Agreed, to many unrealistic guys on this board..........Look at the defenceman for the leafs last night, we are head and shoulders better then them and player per player perhaps we have the best 6 or 7 in the league..............
