eball Posted March 1, 2007 Report Posted March 1, 2007 Zubrus declined (as he should have) and will wear #15, but what does that say about Roy and (once again) the overall character of the Sabres in general? These guys are so tight they squeak. This is going to be one heluva fun Spring.

eball Posted March 1, 2007 Author Report Posted March 1, 2007 Was there an asking price? Not according to the article; it was an "if you want it, take it" followed by "are you kidding me? of course not" exchange.
apuszczalowski Posted March 1, 2007 Report Posted March 1, 2007 Its a younger player offering his number to a veteran Its a sign of respect, something I think that entire roster is filled with a lot of
Orange Seats Posted March 1, 2007 Report Posted March 1, 2007 Its also a good sign that Roy has his eyes on what matters - winning the cup - instead of petty things like jersey numbers.
LoveAndWarrener Posted March 1, 2007 Report Posted March 1, 2007 try comparing it to the NFL where guys sell theirs for $25K+. I guess it usually ends up being a camp-scrub or backup who sells it to the star. Even so...

Excellent moves by both players.
The_Swannie_House Posted March 1, 2007 Report Posted March 1, 2007 Best Jersey Number Story: Mitch Williams wore number 28 with the Chicago Cubs and wanted to keep it when he joined the Philadelphia Phillies in 1991. John Kruk let him have it for two cases of beer
Fronz1103 Posted March 1, 2007 Report Posted March 1, 2007 imagine all the fans w/ a Roy jersey who wouldva been pissed if Zubrus accepted...
carpandean Posted March 1, 2007 Report Posted March 1, 2007 Nah, it would make it even more special. "Hey, your Roy jersey has the wrong number." "Actually, he wore #9 for his first few season in Buffalo." "Woh. Cool piece of history." Class act move by Roy.
MichFan Posted March 1, 2007 Report Posted March 1, 2007 Does this officially make Roy a B-liner that we won't give up and replace with a young guy to fit both Danny and Dru under the cap?

I hate to say anything nice about the Leafs, but there was a similar situation in Toronto this year. Kubina signs in the offseason and takes #73 (he wore 13 with Tampa, but that frigging Sundin has it in Toronto.) Anyway he starts out the season with some bad luck - injury, poor play, etc. - and decides to switch to 31, the reverse of his old number. I can't find the link for it, but apparently he offered to pay for fans to switch their jerseys from 73 to his new number. Knowing how superstitious athletes can be, it's nice to see some of them who are more concerned with guys other than themselves...
carpandean Posted March 2, 2007 Report Posted March 2, 2007 Anyway he starts out the season with some bad luck - injury, poor play, etc. - and decides to switch to 31, the reverse of his old number. Didn't Satan wear #18 when he started with the Sabres and then switched to #81 due to bad luck.
Bmwolf21 Posted March 2, 2007 Report Posted March 2, 2007 Actually, IIRC, he started with 81 b/c someone already had 18 (Grosek, I believe) and when Michal left, he took 18. When he struggled while wearing 18, he switched back to 81, and when Timmy came in next year, he took 18 & wore it until the Sabres retired it.
