Game discussion thread Pre Season GDT - Buffalo @ Carolina 7pm
LGR4GM posted a topic in The Aud Club
Buffalo Sabres @ Carolina Hurricanes - 7pm est. WGR 550am Radio This will mark the 2nd preseason meeting between these two teams. During the first contest the Sabres won 2-0 on a stellar 35 Save shutout by Jhonas Enroth. Drew Stafford and Tyler Ennis each had 1g and 1a for the Sabres in the win. During that game Canes center Jordan Staal was injured (Broken Leg) and Mark Pysyk the rising Buffalo Sabres defender was also injured (Upper Body). Pysyk is expected to miss another week or so of action but has been skating on his own. The Goaltending matchup for tonight is believed to Michael Nuevirth versus either Khudobin or Ward. The prevailing theory is that it will be Ward as Khudobin played in Columbus on Wednesday. Mikhail Grigorenko will be in the lineup when "Buffalo heads into its final preseason game tonight in Carolina (7 p.m., Radio 550 AM) having used 37 skaters, and 25 have played multiple games. The inclusion has increased camaraderie and made the players feel like they were given a fair opportunity. “You see a difference in attitude with everybody,” General Manager Tim Murray said. “You see more competition. You see the competition looks to be on merit and not based on who drafted who where and when. The players have more belief in us, and we’re headed in the right direction.” http://www.buffalone...rce=twitterfeed Grigorenko and Cody Hodgson have formed a friendship and are looking forward to the future. "He’s been Cody Hodgson’s neighbor for all of training camp. Its easy to see their instant chemistry both off and on the ice. CoHo set up Grigo for his beautiful goal in Toronto on Sunday night. Grigo has been repaying the favor ever since by hitting CoHo on the tape. Grigo, CoHo and Jake McCabe nearly scored on a well executed 3-on-1 breakaway on Wednesday night. Grigo told me that he was bummed because he was raedy for McCabe’s one-timer. He wanted badly to score on that play. It didn’t happen , however, the two buds laughed about it in the room after the game." http://www.hockeybuz...arriers/6/62721- 62 replies

A scintillating match up between the the 28th place Buffalo Sabres verses the 29th place Panthers. Florida has a stunning 3 goals for versus 9 against through 3 games. Buffalo meanwhile has 8 for and 17 against through 4 games. First goal for in this game could be huge. This is edge of your seat stuff. This is one of the 12 or so premier match ups in the Carrion Hockey League. Meanwhile, the Isles are in first place in the whole NHL..

Our first match up against the Bills of hockey. Blow Leaves Blow! -
Who shows up today? Bruin beaters or Canadien cupcakes?

The Habs have bounced back to a 4-2-0 start after shaking off the lockout ennui with an opening day home loss to the Leafs. Defenseman Andrei Markov is off to a hot start, with 8 points in his last 5 games, including 4 goals. Carey Price is holding the fort well, surrendering fewer than 2.00 goals per 60 minutes to complement a 4-1-0 record. Will Vanek continue his scorching start? More importantly, could the Sabres survive if his line has an off day?

My first GDT of this season. Sabres coming off a heart breaker at home, losing the last 4 and only getting one point in that stretch. Our prized rookie gets his first goal, hoping this continues as a regular trend. Boston is atop the Eastern conference and is playing tough, many are pessimistic about a victory here, but it's make or break time. We apparently built a team to compete with Boston, let's see what our boys can do Go Sabres!!! -
Play Oreo or not. Can't lose three in a row. Mike Ribeiro leads Washington with four points (1+3) in four games, while Alexander Ovechkin has collected just one point – an assist – this season. Will Vanek play? Let's Go Buffalo!

"Where our hockey club is right now, we have to be open to listening to just about anything and everything," Regier said. "I have talked to all 29 GMs over the last week, and I'll continue to try to figure out ways that we can get better not just for the rest of this year but, more importantly, for the future." So he wants the Sabres to lose? My only solace is that it's almost over.

Again....

Two teams in the same situation. Game on!

Game on!!!

Sabres are four points out of eighth place. Big game tonight.

Laviolette's job on the line. Probably Rolston too. Sabres pretty much out of it but this game could give hope (not much). Coming up as both MSG and NBCSN game.

The Sabres try to continue their better play of late by hosting the bahstan bruins tonight. the game is being broadcast on NBCSN at 7:30ET. I have to admit we must get awesome TV ratings out of Buffalo to keep getting National games with the product we've produced this year. LETS GO BUFFALO ESPN Preview http://www.espn.com/nhl/preview/_/gameId/400962120 BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Consistency remains a problem for the Buffalo Sabres as they look to turn things around for good. Buffalo will look to put forth a more consistent effort on Tuesday night in a nationally-televised home game against the Boston Bruins. The Sabres (8-18-7) are coming off one of their better offensive efforts of the season on Friday against the Carolina Hurricanes. In that game, former second overall pick Jack Eichel delivered his first career hat trick but the Sabres ultimately came up short in a 5-4 overtime defeat. Those outcomes are the story of the season in recent weeks for Buffalo. After a dreadful stretch in November that saw Buffalo lose 11 of 12 games, the Sabres have been better as of late but have yet to see it pay off in the standings. Buffalo has points in five of its last six games but has also lost four of its last five games (1-1-3). "There was a lot of good things, but at the end of the day, we only get one point," Eichel said after the loss to Carolina. "It stings a little bit. "It's not good enough to get a point. It seems like it's been the reoccurring theme here of late. We've had good effort and put ourselves in games and had opportunities to win and we're coming out with overtime losses." Sabres coach Phil Housley continues to stress consistency, structure and urgency in Buffalo's play on the ice. "It's just those little details and I continue to talk about it, our play without the puck," Housley said. "It's that urgency that something bad could happen, and (against Carolina) it did." With 28 points (11 goals, 17 assists), Eichel is second on the team in scoring. Evander Kane (14 goals, 17 assists) has been Buffalo's best and most consistent player this year and leads Buffalo in scoring. One bright spot for Buffalo has been the play of goalie Robin Lehner, who has really come on as of late. Lehner has a save percentage of .911 in 25 games played this year. The Sabres could get some help sometime this week as Jacob Josefson looks to return from an ankle injury. Josefson has missed much of the season due to injury but has performed well as a depth player when in the lineup. Boston (16-10-5) is entering a busy period of the schedule; the Bruins are in the middle of a stretch of three games in four days and seven games in 10 days. The Bruins head to Buffalo following a big 7-2 win over Columbus on Monday night at home. Improving on the power play was a focal point after struggling in a Saturday overtime loss to the New York Rangers and the Bruins came up with two power-play goals in the second period against Columbus to open the flood gates on offense. "It was good to get the first goal," Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy said after his team scored the first three goals. "It's always an advantage, especially at home, to get the other team chasing the game." Charlie McAvoy scored a power-play goal and added an assist. Fellow Bruins rookies Danton Heinen and Jake DeBrusk played key roles with a goal and two assists. Heinen has four goals and nine points in the last seven games. David Pastrnak leads the Bruins in scoring with 31 points (15 goals, 16 assists); Brad Marchand is second in scoring with 29 points (14 goals, 15 assists). Both Tuukka Rask (.912 save percentage) and Anton Khudobin (.915 save percentage) have excelled between the pipes. -

Your Buffalo Sabres will attempt to have their 2nd 2 game winning streak by playing the Hurricanes tonight. A solid outing by the Sabres led by Kane and Eichel, who were both flying around the ice yesterday. Move Kane off one line and suddenly his new line becomes the 5v5 scoring line for the team. Scandella and Risto both played over 29 and 28 minutes respectively yesterday so it will be interesting how Housley splits the D minutes tonight. Does Erod return to the lineup, does Gorges remain in the lineup??? Carolina is 3-1-1 in their last 5 games with an impressive win over the Predators in their last game and a just as impressive 8-1 loss to the Leafs. Which team shows up today?? LETS GO BUFFALO GAME PREVIEW NESN.COM RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Carolina Hurricanes have had extreme results throughout the season but perhaps nothing quite like this week. And there is no telling if Saturday night's home game against the Buffalo Sabres at PNC Arena will bring any sense of normalcy for the Hurricanes. There was Tuesday's 8-1 loss at Toronto followed by Thursday night's 4-1 victory at Nashville. So just keeping it together might look like a challenge at times for the Hurricanes (15-12-7). "You've got to have the 'pack of wolves' mentality, right?" Carolina coach Bill Peters said. It is a pattern that at times might not make sense, but at least the Hurricanes know that their fortunes can change quickly in either direction. "I think we've done that a few times," forward Derek Ryan said. "We've had some poor performances and then bounce back the next game. That builds character and some resiliency. I'm proud of the boys for doing that." It also creates some uncertainty about how the team might perform. Buffalo (9-19-7) has had fewer encouraging moments, though a 4-2 victory Friday night at home against the Philadelphia Flyers provided some positive vibes. The Sabres, who hold the second-worst record in the NHL, are 1-2-1 in their last four games. The lone point in that stretch before Friday came in an overtime loss Dec. 15 at home to Carolina. "Obviously trying to find the right formula," Buffalo coach Phil Housley said. "We're just trying to play a simple game." Housley said good things need to happen for the Sabres, whose confidence has been stunted at times. "The biggest thing for us is to get a good start," Housley said. "Try to back the other team off. ... Don't allow their fans and their energy to get any momentum. We've got to shoot pucks. We have to keep hammering that message." The Hurricanes should know the value of a good start because they're 13-3-2 when scoring first. Veteran Cam Ward has been the most consistent goalie for Carolina this month and he could be in line to start for the second game in a row after a strong performance in Thursday night's victory at Nashville. "When you get the opportunity to get in, you want to make the most of it and just try to do my job," Ward said. "Winning is fun. We're looking to end on a good note against Buffalo before the (holiday) break." The Hurricanes are 4-1-0 in their last five games, but they have been outscored 16-15 during that span because of the misery in Toronto. "Obviously things didn't go well in Toronto and we were embarrassed because of it," Ward said. The Sabres are playing on back-to-back nights, so that could put the lineup in flux. "It's some difficult decisions, but it also breeds some good internal competition and they all have to be sharp," Housley said. This is only the second home game in a three-week period for the Hurricanes, who are beginning a three-game homestand. For Buffalo, this game begins a three-game road stretch. VS -
SO early. No one can care anymore. The superstition of not starting a GDT until midnight of the day of was broken by d4rk, I believe, early this year. And again, who can care anymore? The winter is over. It is Spring. Literally, sure, but figuratively is what I'm at. Let's watch the kids start to play together and coalesce. Let's watch them bounce the Pit right into the pit.
