He seriously just didn't see who put it in. They can't all be amazing calls. I still think he sounds great doing the games.

I really can't imagine a scenario where Regier couldn't have done a better job there. Make re-signing Drury and Briere the priority in Summer 2006 before moving on to all the RFAs we had that summer. I can't imagine that that had to turn into the debacle it turned into.

GAME DISCUSSION THREAD GDT: Leafs at Sabres (7:00PM 1-29-2013)

He definitely didn't see who it was initially and scrambled to come up with something memorable afterwards, but didn't. I don't know if that meant he's not himself or if it was just fluke where he didn't see the scorer and therefore didn't have a call ready to go when the puck went in. -
I really need to get your definition of a "True #1 Center." If you don't think Grigorenko can develop into one, your standards are probably pretty high. And if that's the case, why would anyone trade such a player?

I know that was Miller's career year too, but the difference in that team and basically every other team we've had the last 5 years was Myers' play. The entire team played better. It wasn't just the same crappy team with a much better goalie behind them.

If only someone on this board had been suggesting that we trade Leopold before the season..... (He may still have more value at the deadline when teams are desperate. Of course, that assumes we're ready to deal and aren't desperate to make a dash for 8th again.) -
That's the outlier, and it seems like more fluke than real when you consider that the season was fueled by a 19 year old Tyler Myers rejuvenating the entire franchise and scoring 48 points in 82 games. Without that version of Myers, we're right back to where we were -- and I don't know if/when that guy is ever coming back. The post Spring 2007 years have not been kind to the Buffalo Sabres.

Regier has said he would "never" fire Lindy, but I guess I could see it happening. The funny thing is that I have more faith in Ruff than I do in Regier. For the millionth year in a row (it seems like), I'm wondering what the plan is to actually win the Stanley Cup. We're never really contending and we're never bottoming out. We just fluctuate between 8th and 9th place finishes.

I don't think anyone thought it was intentional, but it was still definitely a penalty (and a four minute one at that). -

You mean how our "home" games are attended mostly by Toronto fans? -

Coaches that win Stanley Cups don't last even half as long as he has. Romance. Maybe that explains the last goal. Miller was jealous. I get it though; Foligno is dreamy. -

If you're referring to "shooting percentage" as an "advanced stat", that's hilarious. -

We're on track to miss the playoffs and draft nowhere close to first overall. This is Regier's specialty. -

That's all on Miller. Just a brutal goal. -

Foligno tackling Grigorenko after the goal was beautiful. -

No doubt we have a bunch of season ticket holders from Canada, but I'm skeptical that a large percentage of Sabres season ticket holders don't even like the Sabres. -

Who was saying we had enough scoring? Actually, was anyone even predicting that we'd finish higher than maybe 7th in the East? Even the most optimistic fans didn't think we were all that great. -

Which doesn't change the fact that we have way too many fans who buy tickets just to sell them later. The fact that they failed to make a profit doesn't change that that was their intention. When you have 15,000 season ticket holders, there's no way you should have 10,000 Leafs fans for a game like this. -

That's the price we pay for having so many season ticket holders who sell their tickets to make a profit. -
Yeah, but it was still pretty much all his fault though....

If he stays, he should play at least 17 minutes a game like he did yesterday. He's not going to get anything out of playing 10 minutes a game on the fourth line. I don't give a crap how bad the Sabres need him this year. This decision should only be about what's best for his development long term. If the Sabres are going to suck this year without Grigorenko, there's a 100% chance they're going to suck with him too.

Stay classy, Buffalo. (How much money do you actually save by doing this instead of just buying the overpriced drink at the game? Like 3 dollars??) It's the humiliation but it's also the unnecessary hassle. I don't think those security guys actually think they're going to find anything when they pick you for the "random" search. They just know they need to search a certain number of people and pick the ones who look like they'll be the easiest. (The same way cops would rather give soccer moms speeding tickets than kick down doors and try to bust meth dealers. It's a lot easier and safer.) I really doubt the security guys at the airport or at the game think Chz or me or probably any of us look like we're in a sleeper cell. This isn't about making anyone safer; this is about the illusion of safety. -
I live in a ~650 sq.ft. apartment in Chicago, so if I'm not in my kitchen or bathroom, I'm in the only other room in my apartment and that's where I watch the games. I have NHL Gamecenter and a Roku box, so I can put the game on TV and then work on my laptop (or, more likely, just screw around on my laptop) while it's on. It's a pretty decent setup and while my apartment basically sucks, I'm on the 35th floor and have a view of the water so there's that. I'm jealous of your cave though. I'm looking forward to getting a house sometime in the next few years so that I can have something similar. I need a place to put all my Sabres, Bills, and Angels stuff. (I have a ridiculous amount of Los Angeles Angels stuff because my uncle works for the team and mails me everything.)

Grigorenko has played well (in limited ice time). He just hasn't scored. To play as well as he has....as an 18 year old.....is actually promising. But I wouldn't use these first five games to predict what he'll be in the NHL ten or five or even two years from now. As for the front office, if this season starts to go down in flames, they'd better be ready to have a massive fire sale. If it were up to me, I'd re-sign 26, 29, and 30 to be the veteran presence while we rebuild around younger players. (Admittedly, sentimentality plays into this as well. For the right price, we'd have to be ready to move any of them.) After that, anyone drafted before 2009 can be available (and, yes, this includes Myers and Ennis). We have Grigorenko, Armia, Girgensons, Pysyk, McNabb, Foligno, etc. as the new core to build around. I want (hope) Hodgson, Myers, and Ennis to be part of that as well, but they may or may not be what we're hoping for. Guys like Leopold, Regehr, and Stafford should be able to get us assets at the deadline that help with the rebuild.
