Game discussion thread GDT: Sabres at Bruins 7:00 PM (1-31-13)

Wow, that was way worse than I thought. Not a fan of this play both because I get nothing out of head shots in the NHL and because it's probably going to lead to a Bruin taking an insanely cheap shot at one of our guys next game. -

The only bad news is that now I'm expecting a giant revenge ###### storm the next time we play Boston. -
I'm against the 49ers winning because I don't need Colin Kaepernick winning the Super Bowl in his tenth NFL start. No one's life should be that awesome. Flacco has had to take a bunch of crap from people over the years (especially last year when he literally wins the AFC Championship if Lee Evans catches the ball) so it'd be cool to see him finally win the big one. Also, a Ravens win will mean we get literally the most amazing post-game interview of all time from Ray Lewis. 50-50 chance that the clouds open up, a ray of light comes down, and he gets sucked up into Heaven. 90-10 chance that nothing he says will be intelligible. All that said, predicting a 49ers win. And they deserve it because it's been several months since that city won a championship.

I would've added XOXO -
The charts with the little team logos are adorable.

"No pressure, Tom, but we've literally given everyone in attendance hats to throw on the ice when you score a hat trick tonight. Now go make it happen." -
How often is there a trade where both teams benefit exactly equally? Honestly, that's probably never happened. Arguing about if "Player A was better than Player B" or who won a trade are pretty much the two staples of sports talk. I don't get why anyone is offended that people are comparing Hodgson and Kassian less than a year after they were traded for one another. It's easily one of the most interesting things we've had to talk about in the past few years, and should continue to be (if we're lucky). Also, this whole thread is the "Kassian traded for Cody Hodgson" thread. If you don't want to talk about (or read about) the pros and cons of that trade, just don't come to this thread.

I'd love to know what the deal is with McNabb. By most accounts he's "taken a step back", but his numbers aren't bad at all and he's an AHL all-star this year. I wonder what the team is thinking about him and what their long term plans are for him at this point.

I think it's awesome. It'll be really interesting to talk about this year, and next year, and for the next few years. It doesn't get much better than two teams swapping their top prospects. The Lindros trade defined an era of Flyers hockey but resulted in the Avalanche winning championships. This trade won't be that monumental, but it could certainly change the course of both franchises if only one of these guys pans out, or even if they both do. It looked like the Sabres had the edge at the end of last season and right now I'd give Vancouver a slight edge. Ideally, both players could pan out, and the "winner" of the trade will flip-flop several times and ultimately never be clear. As boring as the Sabres have been since Black Sunday, this is something that's fun to talk about. And if you want some quick entertainment, just read the first 10 pages of this thread to see the initial reactions.

What an effing crybaby. "He didn't let our thugs start a brawl with their skill players! Wah!" -

I thought this about Scott as well. It's not like he's completely horrible when he's not fighting. He's OK. -
Right. Young players with offensive upside generally need to learn defense. Hope that happens with Hodgson. (It's not like Pominville was a well rounded player when he came into the league either.)

He left the game after that. Let that sink in. A Sabre punched a Bruin so hard that he left the game. That happened. -
Blade!

Still not super thrilled with Hodgson. He's on the ice for a ton of the goals scored against us. Hopefully he learns a thing or two from Poms and Vanek because it's scary to see him on the ice when the puck is in our end.

I'm not trying to. You're not saying anything in this thread that I haven't thought. Foligno is ridiculous. He really is too good to be true. I'm trying to temper my excitement because imagining this continuing is a little too exciting for this Buffalo sports fan. -

If I didn't believe in my uncanny ability to jinx things, I might be saying something similar right now. Well, that and the fact that we've seen players show up as stars and then morph into goats (MYERS!). Foligno is too good to be true right now. I hope it never ends. No. No way. Foligno has 21 NHL games under his belt. It's waaaaaaay too early to saddle him with a C or A on his sweater. Pominville has upped his game since getting the C. Let's keep things the way they are there. If Foligno keeps doing what he does, he'll get his chance to be the official leader of the team a little later. -

Just to put this in perspective, this is the 21st game of Foligno's career. He looked like a 10 year veteran tonight. That said, hopefully whatever happened to Myers in 2010 to turn him into a disaster isn't contagious. -

Somebody wake up Darcy and tell him to get the Vanek extension done. Thanks. -
People are already calling this one, and equally innocuous Coke one, racist. Because it's 2013 and everything is racist.

If the Sabres were smart, they'd have given Vanek a contract extension before the season started. Instead, they gave a giant pile of money to Regier.
