Game Discussion Thread GDT: Canadiens @ Sabres 7:00 pm 2-7-13

Carey Price will not be in net tonight. So the Sabres' annual parade of back-up goalies to play against begins, and a little earlier than usual. I've always wondering how much of our late season runs the past few years can be attributed directly to teams just not giving a crap about playing against us in the second half of the year. -
Buffalo News: Darcy on possible changes: 'It won't be the coach'

It's not just money. It's the incredibly bad judgment behind the decision. Regier's contract wasn't about to run out after this season and, more importantly, were teams really waiting to swoop in and get him even if it was? His teams haven't won a playoff series since 2007! Who were we bidding against? If the team is doing insane things like this, you have to question everything they're doing. -

Holy crap. Why? -
Waiting until game time definitely works but the best you can do is still tickets at face value (or just a bit below). If you try to get too cute and offer a really low price, they'll tell you to F off (on principle) or maybe threaten you physically if it pisses them off enough (which happened to me the first time I tried this trick).

Yeah, but then Pegula would want to find out how good the Sabres would be with Seth Jones or Nathan MacKinnon AND Lindy Ruff as their coach. I mean, no.1 draft pick plus Lindy Ruff is probably enough to win the Cup within a year or two, right? Because Ruff is already so awesome. -

The Sabres are introducing a new third jersey next season. No other details yet, but there was a (stupid) rumor a few months back that it was going to be black. My dream is that they keep it simple and just do a yellow version of their current white uniform (i.e. create an instant classic) which is basically what the Blackhawks did when they created a black alternate way back in the 90s that looked awesome. -

If they can't re-sign Vanek this summer, they probably have to trade him. And that's depressing as hell. -
Pretty sure Gerbe is here because Tropp is out for the year. He's a much better fit on the 4th line than Gerbe. Hopefully he can come back from his injury (ACL and MCL tears).

If we're still playing this bad 10 games from now, we should absolutely start rooting for losses. Top 3 pick FTW. -

The fact that our third line has an old, used-up Jochen Hecht and an 18 year old straight from the Q should let you know that we're not going to win anything this year. Booooooooooo. -

They have a lot of credibility in that area. -

Damn, leather seats behind the glass. Ottawa knows how to class things up. -
That's definitely something that all rookies experience. Everything happens faster in the NHL, and it has to seem insane coming straight from the Q. He'll adjust though. It's not even a hockey thing; it's a normal part of life. Think about the first time you drove a car and how intense that seemed (even though you were probably only driving around the suburbs or a parking lot). After a few tries, it was a ton easier.

Nominee for post of the year. -
If anyone is still completely baffled by the obvious benefits of having a very high draft pick, someone with a statistical analysis background whipped up a draft pick value chart in 2011. All you really need to know is that your draft pick get exponentially more valuable the closer you get to no.1 overall. http://myslu.stlawu.edu/~msch/sports/Schuckers_NHL_Draft.pdf

At the press conference for the Regier extension, they said they'd already started talking to Vanek, Pominville, and Miller about contract extensions (or that they were working on it or something). Hopefully they get everything done this summer. And hopefully Vanek is interested in spending his whole career in Buffalo (did Pegula's "Hockey Heaven" stuff do the trick?).
-
A team that bottoms out and stays bottomed out probably has internal dysfunction and ownership issues that can outweigh the benefits of having the opportunity to make high draft picks. A team that is even semi-competent (which I assume we are under Pegula) can use it as a stepping stone to get a lot better. The Sabres did when they got Vanek. (The short list of Sabres drafted in the top 5 illustrates my point pretty well.) The Sedins are the reason the Canucks are perennial contenders. Gabriel Landeskog is already the captain of the Colorado Avalanche. If you seriously don't think landing a really high draft pick helps teams in the long run, then I really have no idea where you're even coming from. But what else is new?

What I said (that you quoted and thought was so obnoxious) was "bottoming out helps teams win." I did not say it's the only way to win or that you "need" to do it. I said it helps, and it does. Sorry that you were confused again.
