I don't see it as leverage, I see it as an opportunity for the Sabres to get some value out of him. Trade him for a 4th or 5th round pick or an AHL vet, I don't care. Or hang onto him and let him play in the A with the opportunity to be called up. Who do we have on the Amerks that can be called up in event of injury? Maybe Fitzgerald if he doesn't make the team? Laaksonen who's been told he needs to up his game? Throwing another player in the mix, one who's mature and has some NHL experience isn't necessarily a bad move. But if another team has a spot for him on an NHL roster, sure move him for what you can get.

The Sabres own his rights. They might as well see if anything is there after a couple years away. It's not that they have to "diddle" with him, just give him a look-see. If they don't like what he has they can waive him and someone else can grab him, but maybe he'll be worth hanging on to. Not sure what past history has with it. He wasn't awful when he was here.

I suspect that bridge is burned.... not so much because there is any bad blood between the Sabres and Pilut but because I think any defensemen the Sabres bring in will be from the perspective of helping the young defensive studs adjust to the NHL, a league he has not played in for a couple of years and in which he was never fully established. Plus he's a left shot. I could see him coming over to play for the Amerks or possibly the Sabres trading his rights as a minor part of a trade.

I think Mr. Rosen will be surprised by the NA game if he thinks he's going to waltz in and secure a roster spot in the NHL. It would be awesome if he proved me wrong.

I think he will try but MAF can go wherever he wants. The mistake Adams made with Ullmark is trusting that Linus would re-sign. He didn't and Kevyn got nothing back. I agree with Adams in not signing Ullmark to more term than he wanted to give him, but even getting to that point was a problem. So unless he's signed by, say, the trade deadline I think Adams should move Portillo if he can. Of course the acquiring team only values Portillo if they're assured they can sign him, so he might not be a featured piece in a trade.
