  1. They have the least number of goals for in the league and traded their last scoring winger. They have the most shots against in the league and traded their franchise GT. If this team finishes 7th or better next year I will send you a case of beer.

More likely, they will finish in 9th.

    Again.

  2. You don't create a position like team president for one guy.

    Why not?

    It's a major strategic decision.

Sez you. It may have been a tactical level decision just to get PLF on the payroll since Patty didn't want to be GM. Make up a title just for him, to give him the room he needed to do what he had to do. It may have always been a "special consultant" kind of position that was never going to be refilled once PLF resigned. On the other hand, maybe they thought he would last a while in the position so they gave him a lofty title.

But I don't see creating that position just for him a violation of any sacred rule of business, especially a business as full of exceptions as hockey.

  3. IMHO, our big problem next year might be goaltending. The tandem of Enroth/Neuvirth doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

Perfect. Get the team playing better in front of them to just be competitive (looking better but still not winning much), then insert top shelf goaltending. Instant contender in a couple years.

You might see Pysyk in Buffalo next year,

I can't understand why anyone thinks Pysyk isn't ready for the big club. He played great this year. Next year he'll be a Sabre for sure.

  4. GO SABRES (or whoever these guys are)!

What an awful first post. Sabes? Really? And two exclamation points?? Sentence fragments. Who the ###### do you think you are? Throwin' haymakers right off the bat. You have a lot to learn about this wonderful community. We don't put up with stuff like this. Fly right. Watch it.

(Just beating nfreeman, d4rk and others to the punch.)

Hey mister sausage-fest fanboi president, don't let all that power go to your head.

  5. Yep. They'll always tell the media that "I'm so happy to be playing here on this team." I kind of think the only way we see Miller back is if he wins the Cup and decides the only way that would be better would be to bring that experience to the Sabres and win it for Buffalo. Pretty much a fantasy I know, but it's all I got right now besides watching the Blues.

  6. Chances are no, not a single one of the UFAs we traded away this year will return. No matter where a player is before he gets traded, or lands after he gets traded, he always makes a remark to the effect that is right where he wants to be (except for the occasional guy that lobbies for a trade because he doesn't like where he's at). But barring those exceptional cases, most players will public support their current employer, whoever that happens to be at the moment.

That said, about the only guy that left this year that really wasn't happy was Vanek. Ott, Miller, Moulson, all made remarks to the effect that they enjoyed their time in Buffalo and up until getting traded mentioned the prospect of re-signing with the team. Do you think any of them meant it, or is that the last we'll see of them? On the minus side, they know the Sabres are at least a season or two from being competitive. On the plus side, they know the city, they said they liked it in Buffalo, and they have the measure of Tim Murray and his vision. They also know there's money to be spent just to get to the salary floor. Do you think any of them will look a the positives and decide it's worth a second tour of duty in the Tank Command?

  7. Time will tell whether today was a good day.

No. It was a good day, period.

Tim Murray had certain assets on the team that needed to be signed or moved. They didn't get signed, so he moved them to ensure he got something back for them. The trade deadline is a poker game among the GMs, and this was Murray's first time as the #1 guy with an organization. For someone right out of the box, he nailed it. Are we disappointed that he didn't get stronger returns? Perhaps. But he did the best he could within the dynamics of what the other teams would offer. He pulled off several trades and while you can kvetch about not getting a high enough draft pick back here or a strong enough prospect there, on the whole you can't really complain. I'm especially pleased with what he did with the goalies. He has a plan and he's executing it based on the information he has right now.

I'm not going to preface it with "time will tell." That's always the case, and the second-guessers will always look at what happened a week, a month, a year from now and talk about what he could have done better. But considering the constraints he was working under, I'm very pleased with the results. I think he maximized the return for the Sabres and you can't ask for anything more.

  8. 3 - 4 years, smart guy, lowballing our expectations for when this team does well in 2 yrs everyone will say he is a great GM.

My thought exactly. And with a three year contract for Nolan, you just know he'll be coaching his cojones off in the second half of his contract to get an extension as the team matures. Three years is the perfect contract length to offer Nolan.
